The BSF was the only force in the country to deploy camels for operational and ceremonial duties. Very recently the Indian army has introduced the double humped camel in Ladakh. While camels may not be of use during war, they are useful in peace in desert environments.

Wait, Army has formally inducted the Bactrian camels? Or is it more a case of local Ladakhi shepards being asked to lend some camels for patrol?

The camels are vital for patrolling the Thar desert border with Pakistan, especially in the Rann of Kutch, which is a huge salt marsh. Jeeps and such break down in the heat and salt water, but the camel keeps going.

India uses Range Rovers as they are Indian owned and Controlled. Just for your information, Jaguar Landrover is an indian owned company for more than a decade now. Also to share, the reason why the rocket launchers are different from what UK uses is that India develops its own weapons which in many cases are equal or better to the what the UK uses. OTher than the US no other country is technologically superior than India at the moment. That will also change soon. The parade was showcasing indian manufacuring, all those armored vehicles, missiles, rockets, bridges, radars, tanks are manufactured and designed in India with the only exception being the T-90 and BMP's which while manufactured here and upgraded by Indian tech is still based on the russian variant.

If I'm not wrong the camels are used for patrolling the line of control and nearby areas in the desert region where India shares its border with Pakistan. There have been many incidents of people illegally crossing the border using underground tunnels. That was the Border Security Force you were looking at. They're usually the first line of response when anything happens on the Western Indo-Pak border. I don't think they use camels in dealing with situations like that tho.

Camels are for petroling mate, the Border Security Force (BSF) uses them in the desert regions in the western border. Also this drill includes all security forces not just Army, Navy and Airforce, the police departments of different states and all the other paramilitary forces are also the part of the drill, obviously not every unit can perform so the best ones are selected every year. Also only select few weapon systems are shown in the parade every year, depending on the year's theme.

12:29 Those bike stunts look silly to me, ngl. Its an old British tradition from the British Corps of Signals that carried over into Indian Army's Corps of Signals and then to some non-Army organizations like the CRPF. And it continues till date, even though British Army has already phased out this tradition. 5:35 Thanks! I had no idea about the difference between an antenna and a aerial. I thought they were synonyms. Makes sense now why most of the electronics literature I read has the word antenna, but not aerial. 4:02 That "badge" is NOT the flag of the Para Commandos. It is just a flag bearing the insignia of the Indian Army Infantry. It is not the flag or insignia of any particular Infantry Regiment. Its a flag that represents all 350 Light Infantry Battalions of the Indian Army. 8:07 That is the Military Nursing Service. So it has females only. First time MNS marched on the Rajpath. 3:11 T-90 Is "not a bad tank" given that it is up against a handful of T-80UD and VT-4 from Pakistan and a few Type-96 from China. Everything else it faces is older Pakistani inventory of tanks based on T-55. So compared to all those, an Indian T-90 is good. Fun fact, India operates more T-90 tanks than Russia does. That said, the new Indian FMBT tank is coming along nicely. And unlike the Arjun tank, most of the tech in the FMBT, from engines to transmission to radars to sights, infrared imaging sensors and Active Protection System, are all Indian. Arjun project had already helped us become self-reliant in armour, cannon, ATGM, automatic target recognition and tracking, vetronics with BITE, etc. So overall, high chance that the FMBT will have >90% of its tech as completely Indian technology. And it will be superior to any current tank from any Asian nation. 4:53 Yeah, the MLRS UK and USA use are M270 and HIMARS, with a common rocket family across them. Those are mostly 234 mm caliber rockets, some guided with 90 km max range. This Indian MLRS system is called Pinaka, which carries 214mm caliber rockets, some guided with 80 km max range. Warhead sizes on both M270/HIMARS and Pinaka are the same (~100 kg) and both are connected to a theater-wide sensor-shooter network (The Indian equivalent is called the IACCS-Shakti, don't know what your version is called). Indian Army also uses heavier MLRS system of the 300 mm caliber. Right now the Soviet Smerch MLRS is being used, but it will be replaced by the new Indian MLRS called LRGR with 200 km range and a heavy 250 kg warhead. Your M270 and HIMARS also are used to fire TBM like the 300 km range ATACMS or the new 500+ km range PrSM. In this role, Indian Army uses dedicated launchers and fires much heavier TBMs like the 500 km range Pralay missile. Indian TBM also have a MUCH heavier warhead: 500 kg-1 ton warhead compared to the MUCH smaller 100 kg warheads of US and UK TBMs. This allows one Indian TBM to carry multiple precision attack sub-munitions (called MLPGM). The tradeoff is that Indian launcher vehicles carry less TBM per vehicle as a result. 6:01 Yep, it is a surface to air missile, jointly developed by India and Israel. It is called Barak-8, 90 km range. Another new Indian system in this category is the Akash NG, 80 km range. Army has these at Corps level. Div level uses the Indian Akash SAM, 30 km range. And Brigade level and below are covered by older Soviet-era systems but are about to be replaced by the new Indian QRSAM, 30 km range and a new SPAAG, still under development. A C-RAM/CIWS system called "Sudarshan" by L&T Defence will provide protection from drone swarms using 40mm AHEAD ammo, much like German MANTIS. Air Force also has the aforementioned systems and on top of that have another layer of long range SAMs like the S-400 and a final layer of Indian-designed ballistic missile defence systems to shoot down nuclear missiles from Pak or China, some even capable of shooting down satellites. ALL the above systems, along with a whole host of AESA military radars and even civilian radars are sewn together in one nation-wide Integrated Air Defence System (IADS). Using this IADS, India has enforced six Air Defence Indentification Zones over the entire country. So civilian flights operating here require an ADC number (authorized by the Air Force) in addition to the usual number used to identify to the civilian Flight Information Reigion as in a normal country. One chartered flight carrying US troops once forgot to get their ADC on time and drama ensued. The flight was merely passing near India, not meant to land there. But it was nevertheless made to land in India. It left the next day after the procedure was complete. 10:46 Ofcourse nobody rides a camel into battle, but desert patrols on camels are a lot easier than on foot or some generic vehicle. Those camels are from the Border Security Force (BSF). There are an entire host of "paramilitary in all but name" organizations in India, like the CRPF, ITBP, BSF, SSB, CISF, NSG and RPF. All of them (except the last one) are under Ministry of Home Affairs. Overall, these forces have a million men among them. And more than twice the amount of artillery cannons (not counting mortars) than the entire Canadian Army. Even has their own paratrooper units. Also, the Army doesn't use camels. They do have 6000+ mules though. For mountain warfare logistics.

And the Indian army has upgrades as well in the T90.
@death_parade
@death_parade 11 ай бұрын
@@Noobop-sz7vo Yeah, there have been some minor upgrades. Stuff like a new Indian Thermal Imaging sights for Commander developed by IRDE, DRDO and manufactured by BEL are being fit on the T-90. And there is the new mine plough fitted to all Indian T-90. But these upgrades still leave a lot to be desired. Our T-90 were purchased without Shtora and till date do not have even a LWR, forget RWR or hardkill countermeasures. Frankly, if the Russians allow Indian Army and DRDO to actually seriously upgrade the existing T-90 tanks, we'll be able to make a new beast out of it. But Russians want to sell us the T-90MS and then Armata. They want to basically continue the system we had in the 1990s where Indian money bankrolled major Russian weapons programs like the Su-30, Su-35, MiG-29K, T-90, etc. Too bad that Indian weapons technology is catching up to the Russians. At this point it is better for us to focus on FMBT and then replace all Russian armour we have with FMBT. Same with FICV replacing BMP-2.

The Indian army still patrols the frontier with the Mahwani breed of horse, much loved by HM The Queen and they leave no digital trace or logistical trail. They can go places no vehicles can and quietly. Ditto the mule or camel. It would be interesting to pitch them against a western unit up in the hills on a patrol competition. I suspect l know who’s going to go win. The Chindits also opted for the mule across the jungle and steep mountain ranges of Burma. As did some of the CIA in Afghanistan.

Indeed. Although, I am a bit miffed with the Army's latest purchase of "Robotic mules," you know like that quadrupedal robot Spot from Boston Dynamics? The one Army ordered is the Vision 60 model from American firm Ghost Robotics and it can carry a mere 10 kg upto around 10-20 km. Pathetic compared to a proper mule. Yet the Army blew a 285 crore Rupees hole in their budget ordering it. *This 285 crore could have been spent on Infantry gear! This amount of money would have bought 3rd Generation binocular Night Vision Goggles with friggin White phosphor tint and stupendous 1700+ Figure of Merit. And not just for a battalion or two. With this much money, we could have bought enough of these advanced NVGs to equip ALL troops in every Ghatak Platoons in at least 100 Infantry Battalions. For reference, entire Army has 350 Light Infantry Battalions.* I have a bad feeling that this was some bureaucratic or political compulsion. Same with that silly order for jetpacks. Jetpacks are just not tactically viable right now. Especially in the thin air of the China front. These silly orders are atrocious, especially given the peanuts of funding that the Army does get for modernization. Imagine what Field Marshal Manekshaw would have said to this nonsense.

Camels are not used for war neither are the horses nor are the bikes but either training a horse a camel or gaining that level of control over the motorcycle require plenty of focus, will and skill. These are art forms and Indian military preserves them. Its a way to give a message that we are so focused that we can make nature and machines March at our will. It's very much symbolic.
