My own book, The History of History: Politics and Scholarship in Modern India (Oxford UP, 2nd ed., 2005) goes into this question in some detail. You will find references to other works as well. The other person to read on this is Ashis Nandy. Please look up the internet and you will see his book on Ayodhya and also articles by him, such as "History's Forgotten Doubles".

Sir, I would like to point out a correction in the story. prahlada's father was not forcing him to worship shiva but to accept him (prahlada's father) as the supreme god. And yes he was also a devotee of shiva and turned against him once he was granted the boon.

he is making up the story(stories) to prove his point of sectarianism between the 2 sect, in both ramayan( attaching rama with vishnu and ravana with shiva but omiting the idea of rama worshing shiva at rameshvaram before embarking on to lanka...one would find this picture everywhere in india) and narashimha story( here its brahma not shiva who bestow boon to hiranyakashyapu(demon) he did not mention lots of other fact or misinformed students which could disapprove his point of sectarianism.....he could have used other stories i guess there are lots of other stories which could people like to use to prove their points....!

Mr V Lal...clearly does not understand Hindu and trying to be a liberal/leftist/atheist. Supreme court has accepted that there was a temple under the B Masjid, proved beyond doubt. Please educate yourrself as a historian

Nope the Supreme Court has said there may have been another structure where the mosque was created. THe SC has also mentioned that there is no proof that the structure was destroyed. In any case, ASI is no longer an independent body and all of its findings should be taken with a pinch of salt.
