An excellent overview of the subject. Thank you for this . Indians came to Southern Africa as slaves with the Dutch in the 1600s . Their history in Africa is far older than the modern narrative of 1860.

Yes, true, thanks for mentioning it! The first Indians were brought by Dutch in the late 1600s, in the 1680s to be precise. However, those "Indians" meant a broader meaning. In fact a lot of those slaves were from Sri Lanka. The reason why I have not talked about this aspect is because from the numerical point of view (we are talking about a few thousand slaves) and the impact it had in the current Indo-African community was very limited. Unlike, on the other hand, the social, demographic and historical implications of the arrival of Indian coolies meant from the mid-nineteenth century brought by the British authorities.
