Hello there! I don't have hate, but I've seen this in Indian families, and I'd like somebody who's indian to answer this question, if you find it. I'm not an Indian myself but have Indian friends. Why do Indian parents pressure their children to be some kind of doctor, lawyer or engineer? I'm not saying it's wrong, but why do they? It's the kids' lives, not theirs. Please elaborate Thanks
@B.entries5 жыл бұрын
Hello ! This is going to be extremely long, sorry in advance :P . To answer your question - In India education is given sooo much importance and a person is given more respect if his career is stable and has a 'status' - so a child being a doctor is more stable (financially) and has more 'status' in the society than say to be a photographer. Its like be the best in whatever field you choose. Science was considered the only stream (compared to commerce or arts) worth studying according to parents coz back then (during the 70's - 80's) good jobs in other fields were unheard of. Its not exactly direct pressure we experience (like them badgering us to become docs or enggs) but there is an indirect pressure of letting them down coz in their minds they want the best for their kids and want everyone to respect their child - and when they grew up doctors and engg / lawyers = respect. Obviously we as kids don't want to let our parents down coz of how much they sacrifice for us. I think every first gen immigrant child can relate to this and has seen their parents working 3 /4 jobs to make ends meet - its an emotional thing that stays in your mind all your life. Of course we can say, '' I don't want to become a doctor'', but from a young age we are so used to hearing careers like doctor or engg spoken in the family we end up leaning that way and end up liking science etc and choosing that field. That being said, I loved physics and chem but was terrible in bio, I knew medical was out of question for me and I didn't fancy engg. So I told my dad that I was taking commerce (for which i had a lot of questionable looks from relatives and extended family. I'm the only one who took commerce - even among my cousins to this day) but parents support you no matter what. The only thing my dad told was ''Nowadays anyone with the means to get an education can get a degree and become an accountant, its a competitive world.'' And what he said made sense - people do masters now to get an upper hand when they go job searching. So I knew I had to aim for the best in whatever field I chose , hence I did ACA (chartered accountancy) with my degree. About it being ''kids lives'', its true but idk if this is going to make sense, in South Asian families - a family is a unit, its the backbone of everything you do and there is no ''this is my life - I do whatever I want'' as long as our parents are alive. Even after we grow up and become independent we tend to go to them and seek advice from them coz that is how we were raised for generations. One example I can give is moving out - unless you work in a different state or a city where daily commute is not practical, its rare where Indian parents allow kids to move out. That is how important 'being a family' is in our community and when you are with family all the time your parents (and siblings) will give their opinions in everything. Of course the decision is ultimately yours but your thoughts are guided by those opinions or advice they give. Hope that helps you understand.
@tetecole34485 жыл бұрын
You got part of my question answered. But let me put the question in detail. Sorry, my comment may seem like I'm offending some of you guys. I'll give you some examples. Sooo, I know a mom from India and her and her husband had very good jobs at the time. She has two children, of one who is an engineer and I don't know what the other one does. One thing I noticed when I was with them was that the mom was pressuring the engineer daughter to get married and she doesn't want to get married. So, the have not been speaking for at least a month and a half. And the daughter once told my mom that she admires that my mom lets me be what I want to be. Another example: My mom has a friend who is a lawyer and she has a sister who is studying to be a doctor. Their father was a retired doctor, now who is sick. My mom's friend has a three-year old son and every time the grandparents visit, there is always some kind of controlling in the house. Like the grandparent would go to the parent's room and look in their drawers (I'm not lying) and if the daughter in medical school visits her lawyer sister's house and hears the parent coming over to visit, she finds an excuse and leaves the house. Every time I visit the house, it feels dead, as if no body was there. I remember a friend of mine, who now works in the Government in I.T. Her mother died a few years ago, and she had told us that when her father was young, his mother died and his father re-married. The step-mother was so mean and she made him study all day, even after school. He could not even come out to play. And now it's affecting him. My friend doesn't even want to talk to him. The lawyer mother leave for three weeks at a time, and her son can't even see her. He's only three years old. What kind of parent is that? And every time she enters the house, he runs up to his room and don't even want to see her. And all the examples I stated are all Indians. I can name so many examples of what you call "being somebody" affects parent-child relationships. I am an American citizen and I was born here. People in America care about status and if you are a real friendly person or not. You can have so much money, but if your personality is trash, how can you communicate with people? Life is not always about studying. It's a part of youth. Youth is supposed to be spent in having positive fun and also getting good grades. It's also about setting a good friendship base. All of that starts in youth. I know a lot of Indians who are rich and don't even have the most basic communication skills. What is that kind of life? And what is even more sad is that it's a mental pattern. Even those who are affected by that will do the same to the next generation. Life is not always about money. Money is something you get from going to a workplace and work there. Money is paper. Since when papers are running our lives? I've had a lot of Indian people come up to me and ask what my mom does. What the heck? Friendships based on money don't last long. Remember, this is America and not India. When people come here, you have to adjust to a certain rules and you also have to be willing to go out of your comfort zone. I can understand about there is no it's my life and I can do what I want. There is always certain standards to every thing. But at the same time, you only live once. So live life to the fullest. I had researched about the annual salary difference between an engineer and a artist painter. And there is not much difference. YOU should be able to be happy with whatever you have. In America or even anywhere, status is not earned by money. It's earned by respecting other people and treating other people as if they were yours with respect. THAT is what status is. Sorry if I was offending anybody. I just feel sad thinking about it.
@bubblegumbetchhh5 жыл бұрын
Tete Cole Hey! I'm probably a month late but I just saw this and I wanted to add something to the previous answer to your question. Yeah you're right, a lot of Indian children, especially if they're children of immigrants, don't really have a good relationship with their parents - atleast until they realise the true intent of their parents' actions. I'm a child of immigrant parents myself and I won't say that Indian families are perfect bc they aren't. Sometimes parents do perpetuate harmful stereotypes among their children like for eg: being too strict, insanely high expectations, being stoic/not talking about one's feelings at home, etc. But Indian parents have a very strong sense of duty that makes up for that and that is what most children can really learn from them. In Indian families, the physical well-being and financial security of children are prioritized over their emotional needs. I'm not saying it's right, but you have to understand that India is a country with a large lower and lower-middle class population. Adding to that all the negative connotations associated with being poor in Indian societies, I would say that many Indians fear poverty and will do anything to avoid it. Hence why the obsession with success and financial security. Indian parents, especially migrants, will struggle to any extent in order to make sure their family is well-provided for. A major reason why people migrate from India at all is to have a chance at a better quality of life for themselves and their kids. This is what any loving Indian parent ultimately wants for their child. To them, it's the highest expression of love to elevate your child to a point where he/she never has to fear poverty, be it through a high-income career or a successful marriage. Things like socializing, chasing your dream, etc are sort of like first world problems for them bc they're so focused on that goal. And we, as children, grow up with these examples and are taught to value the family as a collective unit and obey our parents' decisions rather than focus on our individual desires and well-being. Sometimes we might grow resentful of them when we compare our dynamics to that of our White classmates with their folks. I think it's quite natural to feel that way. But ultimately, most parents, whatever race they might be, do most things out of love for their children. Misguided, perhaps, but love nonetheless. Yes, this type of parenting can sometimes stunt the emotional growth of children and hamper their social life. But recognising the problem within oneself and learning to forgive your parents for being human (and Indian) goes a long way in healing from it. This pattern usually changes when the second gen immigrants become parents themselves bc we all want to give our children what we ourselves lacked in our childhood. But again, nobody is perfect so I expect they'll fall short in other areas. That's all, God bless!

Most parents from the south India are open-minded. They couldn't care less what their children dress like. They're happy to see them adopt the styles of their new country. Their highest priority tends to be their kids' education and security. They're strict about college and getting a decent degree, and don't really care what happens after graduation so long as they're visited by their kids regularly. South India is the most progressive place in India, and that progressiveness transfers when they immigrate to the west. Many parents from north India would go ape bonkers if they saw their child dressed up like in 1:20. That really doesn't happen with south Indian parents. Just a cultural observation about the country I grew up in and its diaspora.
