I'm one of those that started on the Scout. It's really just a case of being honest with yourself as a rider. I'm 43 and perfectly happy riding within the speed limit. Younger people might not be as cautious as I am. Heck I won't ride 2 miles down the street without all the gear. I've had to lock up the brakes once (non abs version) but kept it under control and upright. I'm careful in the corners and don't do any abrupt changes that might upset the bike. I take it easy on the on and off ramps so I don't have to make crazy emergency stops. I bought a cruiser to cruise, if wanted play speed racer I'd have gotten a sport bike :) . Living in NJ I can tell you the drivers here live by the "ME FIRST" rule. They have absolutely no regard for anyone else on the road. They don't look, they don't move over, they don't signal, and they don't put their phones down. I've had people run stop signs and try to merge into me. Since everyone here tailgates the crap out of you, stopping isn't a good option. Twisting the throttle and getting the hell out of the way is many times the best answer. Now almost any cruiser with more the 650cc will be more than fast enough to accomplish this, I looked really hard at the vulcan 650s before the scout. It's almost as fast as the scout with half the cc's. But it's also covered in plastic which didn't appeal to me a whole lot and I'm not a Harley sportster fan (though they're reliable and well made). It's a know yourself situation. Are you going to be able to resist the temptation to push the bike? And realize the bikes limit isn't necessarily your own? That'll be the difference on whether it's a good beginner for someone.

kendil22 and by this guy is referring to someone with zero bike experience? I appreciate your comment I’m not super experienced but I’d consider myself a novice if only slightly above beginner as I’ve rode plenty off road bikes lots of quads but maybe only a handful of times on road on sport bikes, never been on a cruiser but I was looking into a used higher mileage scout for my first cruiser and realistically my first bike you think that’s a good idea? Thanks in advance for your advice it’s always appreciated

kendil22 I currently own and ride a Kawasaki Vulcan S. I’ve been licensed since 1989. I purchased the KVS in early 2016. It’s been a huge disappointment since day one. I test rode a leftover 2019 Scout demo just yesterday. I’m thinking I’ll be upgrading next season. I’m just here to see and hear the scout online.

You are right. The scout is liquid cooled which makes it much more powerful than an air cooled 1200. People dont realize that and can easily get themselves in trouble. I think for young riders that like to twist the throttle it can be dangerous. But for older or more sedate riders it will be a great starter they can grow into and keep for many years.

I’m 34 and just started riding about 2 months ago. I took the riders course and when I finished I’m not going to lie, the scout scared my day one of taking it out at night. The barely pulling on the throttle made me think I made a mistake buying it but after 3 weeks of just riding at night getting comfortable with it I now love the bike and I got used to the power quick but it still surprises me when you go full throttle and all of a sudden it’s R6 quick.

I agree with you. I started out on a Honda Rebel 250. After taking the motorcycle safety course and got my endorsement, I moved up to a Harley Davidson Street 500 ( that's also a great starter bike as well ) then upped to the Honda Shadow 750. Now I am a proud owner of a 2015 Indian Scout in which up to date I already put in 14,000 plus miles on. Perhaps maybe in the near future I'll move up to the Indian Chief...Maybe...

I'm 38 and learned to ride a Vespa before learning how to bicycle. And I agree with you. My first bike was a mini cruiser 150 (Kymko Zing 1998), then Swapped for a Yamaha Virago 250. After that I got a Kawasaki ER6N 650, then back to cruisers with a Honda VTX 1300. I'm temporary sitting on a Honda CBR 650F limited edition and by Xmas I will trade it in for a brand new Indian Scout. It's super important not only to handle the power by steps but also to ride different types of bikes to understand their limits on the road and be prepared to avoid accidents (I know how much a sport bike can bend compared to a cruiser, so I'm able to foresee if the biker in front of me is about to crash or not).

I concur with every point. Things can get stupid REAL quick if one twists the throttle just a bit too much. Hit a bump and get your throttle to give it gas unexpectedly and the bike wants to leave your ass behind. I got the 1920 seat option so nothing to hold me on other than my knees gripping and pointing my toes downward. LOL !

First bike was/is a Scout 2018(ABS) - Night Dragons. Put over 15k KM so far on it. The Scout drives differently at over 4000 RPM and at around 2k-3k RPM. As it actually is my first bike I can say it did the job fine. I drive in rain and all sorts of weather as soon as it's above freezing. The big advantage to this bike is that I don't want to get rid of it after a year. I grew with the bike and I still love it. You have to pick your argument, can't state that the 60 is fine and the 69 is not as a beginner. Got to try the 60 this year and it rides very similarly to the 69. The 60 is missing some HP on the higher gears(5th which is 6th on regular Scout) when you are doing over 100km, but it has almost the same pickup on lower gears where torque comes to play. Comparing the two the sixty is a: 999cc, 78HP, 65 ft-lbs, and weights 525 lb. The 69(regular scout) :1133cc, 100HP, 72. ft-lbs, weight 533lb. The "power" specs are very similar, hence they ride and pickup similarly on the first 4 gears. One big difference is that the regular scout comes with Telescopic Fork - Cartridge Type front fork, which is better than the Sixty, and a pair of NightDragon Tires(some of the best tires on the market), vs the junk the Sixty comes with. You can't claim that one bike is fine while the other is not, they are too similar. In the first 4 gears they ride very similarly, but the 69 has better shocks and tires. Also the 69 handles the highway a bit better because you have access to the extra HP on the highway. However, overall the bikes are very similar in performance in the first 4 gears, the gears you would be using on the street. Trying to argue that the 60 is okay and not the 69 seems very ignorant, it's like you haven't been on both the bikes.

The scout bobber was my first, i have almost 30,000km on it. I tell everyone its a perfect first bike because you won’t outgrow it, the throttle range is massive meaning you can short shift while new and never accidentally spin the tires, the huge flywheel makes it unbelievably forgiving if you shift poorly. Your situation where someone downshifts and finds they’re in the high (dangerous) power band just doesn’t happen. A new rider hears that engine rev higher than they’re used to and they don’t grab the throttle, twist it and wait for it to explode.... I feel like you kept saying everyone was going to disagree with you because you were just saying that for ratings. Anyway. It doesn’t matter to me what people get for a first bike but ive said exactly the opposite to almost everyone, recommending against the 60 as well and i think ive probably caused a few sales. Ive talked to a few people whose first bike was a honda shadow. It was almost my first bike. The scout is like 5lbs lighter. I just don’t see any reason to guide people away from the scout

The Scout is a beast. Very fun bike. Faster than you think, until you start observing the speedo climbing. On wet roads caution is definitely necessary, it'll start baking tire when you may think the clutch is slipping, until you get used to it. Ride safe brothers!

InvictvsNox so you suggest crash bars? Since I only have 200 miles of experience... I'm open to as many suggestions from an experienced rider as I can get. If I can do them within a tight budget is to be determined. I'm a 44 year old married dad, so I'm not a daredevil but I'll rip through 3 gears (I found rev limit in 1st once). I have noticed I dont lean into my turns enough. I dont know if I trust the tires grip enough yet.

I'm looking at Scouts as my first bike... I just have a thing for Indian bikes. I have not yet decided between the Scout and Scout 60, but I'm actually leaning toward the 60 purely due to insurance considerations. (Up here in Ontario, a rookie pays through the nose for insurance on anything over 1000 cc.) Interesting note: quite a few of the motorcycling courses up here have moved AWAY from the 250-300cc bikes to learn on, because they are recognizing that NOBODY is going to actually BUY and RIDE anything in that size range! My local school now trains riders on Honda 600s... I hope to take the course this spring.

Oh... and at 55, I'm WELL past my hot-rodder phase. In a province where the HIGHEST speed limits are 100 km/hr (about 60 mph), I'm not likely to be pushing EITHER bike to anything even remotely approaching it's limits!

I agree with you; when I started riding in 1992, I bought a Yamaha Fazer 700cc as my first motorcycle (before that, only a Vespa and other scooter types...) without any formal training, and I immediately realized it was too much. But I was young and dumb, and that's what I did. After two years I sold it, and I haven't been on a bike since then. After all this time, I'm trying to get back into the saddle, with a novice motorcycle class, and a bike size I can enjoy more and feel more comfortable. Great video! (I DO LOVE an Indian Scout though...something like that is my eventual keeper)

For my first bike. I looked at a Scout and a year ago bought a Yamaha Bolt instead for the reasons he stated here. In retrospect I feel it was a mistake. I had absolutely no issues with the Yamaha. It is a nice bike. I drove the bike 1,000 miles and just 3 weeks ago traded it in for a 2019 Scout, which is what I should have bought in the first place. If you have respect for this bike she will be whatever you want it to be. It is a beautiful machine. I have 350 miles on it because of the weather, but if it were good weather, I wouldn't be writing here, I'd be out on my Scout. My advice? Buy what you love. Treat it right and respect what it can do but wait until you can do it, and you'll be fine and save a few G's in the process.

I think I agree with you- I bought a scout rogue 60 as my bike- I’m a returning rider after 20 years- it’s honestly got plenty of juice, with pipes and air flow kit, probably around 85-86 hp at the higher rev, but it gets up to speed really quick- I like cruising at 60-70, and going through twisty roads but by no means am I a racer- it also does great in traffic- kind of a Swiss Army knife of motorcycles- also they just look so good- my rogue looks like it’s going fast while sitting still- yeah a reg scout may be too much for beginners, I think a 60 honestly would be too, but it depends on the rider and I would have done fine with the reg just because of my riding style

I know you think people will disagree with you but I don’t. I started out (30 years ago) with a 550 Yamaha. It was exactly what I should have ridden at the time for two reasons: 1. It wasn’t too big (heavy or powerful), 2. It wasn’t too expensive (in case I had an accident). I bought the Scout for two reasons: 1. It is a re-introduction bike for me (Haven’t had a bike for 20 years even though I rode a LOT) 2. I can afford a nice bike and wanted the quality and looks of the Indian Scout. So, even though I am experienced, it was an easy choice because, as you mention, it is an easy bike to ride and you can grow into the power the bike provides. My first bike was a "17 Scout 60! I went from just casually cruising to having a lot of fun now that I hit 10k miles. It took a while to build confidence and experience on it. Forgiving enough though for mistakes. I take the toll roads to attempt to wind out 2nd gear....otherwise it wouldn't be legal (have easily punched it to 115 twice now). The 60 will still get to 70/80 in 2nd.... Not the most comfortable on the hands unless you switch the grips but it has pickup. A good test of skill is smooth slow turning coming from a higher gear and generally anything in the rain. I learned some finesse after learning to ride in the rain on it.

I've put 5000 miles on my bike in less than 4 months and I know that may not sound like a lot but for a beginner like me ... Let's just say from the start I was out of my league. But I've grown to love the power ban. It's gotten me out of more situations in the highway than I can count. My advice to other beginners is to just ride smart and think ahead, because if you relax too much on this bike you can hurt yourself.

I started on a superduke which was ridicules, but it wast hard for me to control I put it in rain mode a pretty much putted around town and back roads at first you have to really pay attention though it's no joke . I rarely use the the power anyway unless I get on the highway, or in the middle of no where in the country, and I usually don't do more than 15mph over the speed limit . I wouldn't recommend most people do that though I know how people are, I had a yfz450 quad and let a guy ride it once he was grinding gears and almost flipped the damn thing . I couldn't imagine a guy like that on a motorcycle . If I went back in time I'd probable get a Yamaha FZ07 or a Honda cb650 because those bikes aren't to slow but not super fast, lower insurance premiums than a superduke and something that I would probably keep for years . For a cruiser I don't mind the scout I've road one and wouldn't mind owning one . I road my dads Ultra classic and don't much care for it because they're heavy but I'm sure I'd get used to that if I had to .

My Scout is my third bike and in the middle size wise, but third in CC. I love it. First bike was used. I would still have it if my wife didn’t like to ride along-which influences my decision. I’m 50 (part geezer), but do not like geezer/touring bikes. I like having no windscreen. I want to ride for a couple of hours or a commute, have lunch and a drink and go home. Don’t want to live on the damned thing. The idea of sitting on one for 10 hours is appalling... my commute is 30 minutes and a nice mix of 65 mph and too many red lights... it’s perfect. I agree with the MSC. It is so beneficial. And you can use it for your practical at the dmv in most states.

my first bike was a 2008 Suzuki s40, I put 12k miles on that thing in 2 years. kn&n filter, re jetted it, and gutted the muffler out. it did me very well and bought it for 2k, made it into a bobber style removing fenders and fabricating my own seat and side mounting the license plate. towards the end of that bike I would literally be all the way in it whenever I road hard nearly in the last or second to last gear going around sweeping corners. just recently I picked up a indian scout and put a tune, exhaust and intake on the thing and it is sometimes too much and I love it. I still cant ride it at it's full potential, I tried using a drag racing app to see how fast my 1/4 mile was and did nearly a 3 second 60 foot rolling into it and managed a 12.6 at 107 mph

I got the regular scout as my first bike because the guy I was talking too about Indian kept pushing that "girls aren't that strong/not good riders" button. I just hit my one year anniversary owning it and my first full year riding, despite how tame it is I'm excited how I'm not board of it yet. Traveled around the Midwest and South, started getting minor upgrades to improve my comfort, performance and I love it. Wanna get a Springfield, but I'm happy with my cute little Indian Scout.

Funny I took the MSF course on a 25hp bike, bought a Ducati Monster 620, and the first time riding is was like holysh%t I had better be careful. Fast forward years and many thousands of miles, the Scout is fun at full throttle but you better be careful cause it is fast and does not brake like a sport bike. I save the fast stuff for my Aprilia RSV Mille which is definitely 100% not for beginners!

Not my first choice as a beginner. Unfortunately anything under 1000cc is impossible to find nowadays. The Scout 60 is the smallest cruiser in stock that I can find. Wanted a Honda Rebel 500 as my first bike but I'd be waiting another year before it's available. Plenty of Honda Rebel 1100 for sale but for the price the Indian is a much better deal.

I kinda understand your point however We tend to steer the argument that the bike is somewhat the problem to so many accidents etc when really it all boils down to the rider and attitude on the road especially respectful riding behaviour and the way the bike is treated I own an R1 & GSXR 1000 and I always try to think of the consequences of what the possibilities are if I was to take stupid risks and the outcome So of course ride a bike that is best suited however your a goner on a slow or fast bike regardless

I taught myself to ride on a V Star 1300, mostly at night, with MC Rider videos. The bike and I are still alive, probably because she outweighs the Scout by 200 lbs. Now that I've learned to handle that thing, I feel like the Scout would be swell. The motorcycle course is on 150s(?), which made me feel like a circus bear in the rain for 8 hours. You should avoid it. Your first bike is not meant to be your last bike. They're like marriages that way.

Every time you put out one of these videos about how I probably won't agree with you and then I do, I have to question myself LOL It always makes sense to start out on something smaller and work your way up, especially on the street. The Scout over 6k RPM is fucking scary. The real bummer is not having a proper tachometer. It's impossible to see that little digital tach while your pounding out the gears, which is one of the reasons I rarely hammer it all the way up to the top of the redline.

Yes I agree with most of what you say , being a motorcycle instructor myself in Australia you are by law in this country are not allowed to ride a bike over a certain HP or KW. ( its a power to weight ratio thing ) and to obtain a motorcycle licence in Aus takes some time and training. Which I agree with ,I also think that riders should do advanced riding courses every 2 years to refresh there skills. The riders in Australia that are in the highest risk group is the over 45,s believe it or not ! as when they got there licence there was no such thing as training etc so theses guys have still got there licence ( from 20 years ago ) haven't ridden in that long " the kids have finally left home and they know have some money to spend and go and buy the fastest thing on 2 wheels and think they can ride like they did 20 years ago !

Dazzle Яebel Rides But don't you envy their ability to choose what bike to start on? I was one of the lucky one's who was restricted to 250cc before the test, after which depended on your wallet as much as anything........(BSA Lightning in my case, don't judge me) I dread to think what they have to go through now, it's a whole different level of dedicated and financial investment. UK = 'Nanny State'! (Rant over........and, breath) Like the lower mirrors mind you. I think I'll have some of that on my Thruxton.

InvictvsNox I take your point entirely. I would be tempted to say the Scout is a wolf in sheep's clothing, but that sort of implies I find the looks lacking. Nothing could be further from the truth, I came within an inch of buying one. Loved it then and love it still. I found it had similar manners to the Thruxton R, which was my eventual choice. The Thrusty is a prefect lady until you hit 5000.........and then the 'good time girl' comes out to play. Again, similar to the Scout, the Thruxton is specd., to flatter you. As you point out in one of your previous videos, most bikes are bought with the heart and not the head. Arguments about cost effective transport and the rest are just used to convince others. The last thing I ever asked looking at a bike was 'what's it return mpg?' I don't know what the insurance situation is in the USA, but I'd place a bet on premium price being the major factor between what you'd like opposed to what you'll get........(unless your very old like me, then it doesn't matter!) It's a difficult question. I'd never try and stop someone in their choice, but I would perhaps council caution as you point out. Besides, I'd hate to see £12,000 of someone's hard earned go down the road in a shower of sparks that's for sure........
