I liked this movie. I can see why some people want to stop at 3, as the original trilogy are more pulp adventures and only in Last Crusade do we really start to see Indy as less of a force of nature and more as a fleshed out character. But I like Indy as a character with vulnerabilities and pathos as well. For some, they wont be able to handle seeing Indy as a mere mortal, or think he's being 'deconstructed', but honestly I think its just taking the character to the next great challenge in life and seeing him fight his way back to the top. Very relatable.

The New York scenes were filmed in my hometown - Glasgow, Scotland. It was fantastic to see the work that went into the sets. I took so many photos for those few weeks.

I would have done some of it differently, but honestly, it isn’t as terrible as I feared it would be. Now, I could go for another film in the series as long as they did the whole thing like the first 20 minutes of this one.

I just watched this one with my dad today, its fucking AWESOME! At the end, when the Ju88 flew through the hole, it all came together! The watch was, of course, from the Nazi, the phoenix with the engines was the Ju88 and the one scene where they were watching a play where a dragon attacked the romans, that was the plane crash! So awesome!

Let's give Addie a round of applause for completing the ENTIRE Indiana Jones saga with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). 👏👏🎉🎉 I totally agree with you, this was a satisfying conclusion to the Indiana Jones saga. It was also sweet to see Marion & Sallah again. My girlfriend & I saw it in IMAX and we both enjoyed it, although I still prefer the first three Indy films. I kinda wish that there was a snake moment in this one but at least we got some eels.

Future Addie making an appearance was a pleasant surprise. I have enjoyed all of the added editing extras we've gotten lately and I hope we get more in the future. More future Addie in the future hahaha please don't block me. "Punch it, Chewie!" Oh my heart just loved that line and reference. The throttle does resemble the hyperdrive throttle on the Millennium Falcon. AND the cockpit windows of the plane that takes them back to the past are recreated to look like the Falcon's cockpit. These hints were probably already mentioned but it's worth repeating. Take care of yourself, Addie!!

@pure Nah for that check out the crystal skull film. That was a really poor effort. It didn’t have any of the classic vibe to it, loads of bad sequences on top of the s*#t cgi. Not to mention the whole son thing. This one actually felt like I was watching classic Indy. It was handled well, managing to have a self- contained narrative whilst also being very aware the meta aspects. For me the classic callbacks felt right and not shoehorned. Saw it in the cinema and was well entertained. That opening sequence was awesome and could’ve been lifted straight out of any of the older films. All in all, I thought it was pretty decent job and a great send off for Indy. Or rather Harrison Ford’s portrayal of Indy. No doubt at one point there will be more. But hey, that’s Hollywood baby.

If you think Dial is classic Indy you have really lost the plot. Indiana Jones is practical stunts, real locations, no CGI with some interesting history and archaeology. I wanted to love this movie and even went opening day to an empty theater.

I ultimately didn't mind "Crystal Skull" in spite of its issues, but I can't get behind this one. Honestly, are deconstructing legacy characters and undoing happy endings from the previous installment in a franchise only to re-do them again later the only moves in Disney Lucasfilm's playbook? 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ Of course, the alleged original ending was actually going to see Indy die from his wounds and hand over his fedora to the insufferable Helena, who would then effectively be his replacement. I'm sure that would've made the movie go over even worse than it did at the box office. Spielberg has apparently said Marion would've been more integral to the story in his film. Throw in the re-introduction - and then deliberate sidelining - of Sallah and the complete omission of 3 series staples (an allusion to Indy's fear of snakes, a scene with mass quantities of some sort of creature, and the Paramount logo at the beginning dissolving into a mountain-like structure present in the movie despite actually showing said logo even though Disney is in now charge of the franchise), and this looks like another major missed opportunity by Disney Lucasfilm. 😒

The way I see it, Raiders, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade is the main story. Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny are epilogues. There’s no rule that says there can be only one epilogue (ie. Red Dead Redemption II).

When this movie was about to come out, there were a lot of negative comments about it, but since I figured this might be the last Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford in it I thought I would ignore everything on social media and just go and watch him in this role in the theater for the last time. I was so glad that I made the right decision because I loved this movie, and like you said I also feel like it's a perfect ending to the character's journey. I agree that this is definitely a better ending for the franchise than Crystal Skull. Alas, I do feel like the last sequence of the movie is somewhat lacklustre, especially compared to the terrific opening sequence. It just feels like there was supposed to be one more iteration of something, like they originally went back to the dinosaurs then trying to correct it and ending up in ancient Greece, or else a longer sequence in ancient Greece with Indy and Archimedes and the Greeks and Romans all battling each other and some of the Nazis, with Indy and Archimedes having to work together to figure things out. Or maybe something more to indicate that yes Archimedes did use it to time travel on his own and discovered something profound, which led him to want to destroy it.

Loved watching you keep pulling for Marion to be here. When I saw the separation papers, I just assumed Karen Allen was unavailable for whatever reason, so they wrote her out. It happens. Then she shows up at the end, and it was such an emotional moment. Also, their interaction about "everything hurts," and her pointing to her elbow and Indy kissing it is a call back to them in Raiders, when Marion was trying to tend to the very injured Indy and finally asked in exasperation "Where DOESN'T it hurt?" and Indy pointed to his elbow. Such a great call back, and a deep emotional moment from those characters. And no, Marion wasn't in the third one. Spielberg and Lucas decided Indy was a more a "Girl Of The Week" kind of guy, up until "Crystal Skull."

Thank you for sharing your joy while watching Dial of Destiny. I saw the movie the first week it came out in theaters--the auditorium was virtually empty, just five of us. I half-expected to see the Mickey Mouse Thought Police because of the public battle between fans and the producer and director--a three-way slugfest set against a writer's strike. I liked your joy as much as I liked the movie. Your expectations of Indiana Jones being left in the past were not misplaced. "Scrapbooking" has replaced a tightly crafted script--great for interactive games, but expensive for movies and leads to a disjointed presentation. Marion almost didn't make it to the final cut. Indiana Jones in one version was erased--twice--with Helena becoming the new Indiana. This movie was a box office disaster, but I enjoyed watching. It was fun watching someone else enjoy the Dial of Destiny, too.

Can we just appreciate and celebrate that Harrison Ford at the age of 80 STILL loves playing Indiana Jones and pretty much spear-headed this fitting finale for the franchise in his most iconic role? I don't understand why anyone would be disappointed in this - or frankly any of the films - and it delivers everything you want - ass-kicking Indy battling Nazis, the common good overall for humanity and lastly the tender romance with Marion (I was w/you Ads when I saw this in the theatre about them HAVING to have their closure once and for all - I got teary eyed too; she's the absolute heart of the series). Rip-roaring and bittersweet; so glad you were the first reactor to this too!

Late reply, but as a lifelong Indy fan, I was one of the people who was disappointed when seeing the film for the first time: instead of the film focusing completely on Indy as it should have, it instead focuses more on Helena, a selfish egomaniac who goes out of her way to insult Indy and is given every opportunity to upstage him throughout the film, and even says at one point that she's the one in charge, not him. I hated her character, and still do, and would have much rather had a grown-up Short Round come back and be Indy's sidekick for his final adventure. Although I have softened towards the movie since then, I'm still disappointed at all the opportunities it squandered and the mistakes it made.

Incorrect. Peter Mayhew at the time of the filming of the first Star Wars in 1976 was 7 '3" . Although he did have the surgery you mentioned I don't think it ever changed his height at all, not like it did for Andre the Giant after multiple back surgeries

12:25 Indy hitting the big guy with the sign and it not even fazing him was a classic callback to the original movies. I loved it! The only *real* issue I had with this movie was that they omitted the "Harrison Ford Starring in..." bit right before the title reveal, and also omitting the setting captions (i.e., South America 1936, Utah 1912, etc.). Also would have liked to see the classic one-on-one fist fight between Indy and the muscle villain, but I know at nearly 80 years old, that probably wasn't practical for Ford. Other than that, awesome movie and a respectable, fitting end for a cinematic legend.

DOD erased everything that ended CS with a happy ending! Just imagine if the movie had started out with an adult Short Round, who still wears his baseball cap AND who himself was now an archaeologist! He always saw Indy as a father figure and perhaps he felt inspired by him. He finds something mysterious and decides to seek out Indy after losing contact for the past 20 years. Indy is now head of the university and has become somewhat wealthy and famous after writing several books about his adventures over the years, which would have been later adapted into the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Him and Marion are thriving and Mutt has become much more mature with him and Indy on good terms now. Maybe he comes along for the ride? Anyway, Shorty and Indy have a very happy reunion and he manages to convince Indy into one last adventure after he privately confides to him that hes been thinking of retirement. Maybe Mutt becoming a father and his age be a motivator? They go on an adventure together and they have a touching moment in the middle. The movie ends with Indy's retirement and him taking his fedora off and putting it on Shorty's head, as a symbol of passing the torch to a younger generation. Similar to the beginning of The Last Crusade. NOW THAT would have been a trihumph! I would have loved it! It would have been so easy! What do you think?

I dont think theres a bad Indy movie. Of couse 4 and 5 aren't the original trilogy. But they're still pretty good movies. Helena could have been either a little nicer to Indy, or given us more backstory on why she grew up to sell artifacts. But other than that, it was a pretty decent send off for Indy. Indiana Jones will always be the greatest adventure films of all time and one of my favorite characters in all of cinema.

I thought about writing a comment but I remembered that after seeing the film, I posted my thoughts on my Facebook page. Rather than rewrite all of that, I'm just going to copy-and-paste it here in a series of posts. I'm writing this for within 24 hours of seeing the film but due to problems with my internet you're probably not seeing it until days later. I'll try not to spoil too much for those who have yet to see it (what are you waiting for?) but I will talk about a couple things that have been revealed in trailers, interviews, and rumor anyway so they'll hardly be news to anyone who's been paying attention. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been met with mixed reviews, some praising the film and others criticizing it as being different than previous films in the series. Let me begin by saying that of course it's different. Forty-two years after the character first hit the big screen in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harrison Ford is back as Indiana Jones. The world has changed since 1981 just as the world of the character has changed since the 1936 setting of Raiders. Time has a tendency to change our perspective and our life in ways that to ignore would be irrational. And let's not forget that the Indiana Jones films have already changed before. Last Crusade was the first film to stray from wall-to-wall action to give us more nuanced look at Indy himself as well. This continued with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which addressed the passage of time. How could it not? It had been 19 years between films and Harrison Ford had changed, Steven Spielberg had changed, George Lucas had changed, and the audience, if they stopped to think about it, had changed as well. So too it is with this film. The world has changed between 1981 and 2023 just as Indy's world has changed between 1936 and 1969 when this film is set. (continued)

The film actually opens in 1944 during the waning years of World War II. Indiana Jones, who you may recall achieved the rank of colonel with the American OSS during the war, and his British archaeologist friend Basil Shaw, played by Toby Jones, are in Nazi occupied Europe trying to infiltrate a German castle where the Nazis are preparing to ship out a train filled with the historical artifacts that they've looted from the countries they've conquered and occupied. Indy and Shaw are specifically seeking one particular artifact that ironically I was discussing with someone just hours before seeing the film, completely unaware that it would feature in the opening sequence of the movie: the Spear of Longinus, sometimes referred to as the Spear of Destiny or the Hapsburg Spear. There is an actual spear that was possessed by the Hapsburgs, the former ruling family of Austria, which was purported to be the spear used by the centurion to pierce Christ's side during the crucifixion and the Nazis siezed this artifact after their annexation of Austria. This was the original inspiration for Raiders of the Lost Ark and it's satisfying to see Indy going after it as well as the look we're afforded at some of his exploits during the unseen years between Last Crusade's 1938 and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's 1957. It's during this that we're introduced to both the titular artifact which is the focus of the film's adventure but also the the villain. He is Jurgen Voller, played by Mads Mikkelson, who is a German scientist interested not in the Spear of Longinus but another artifact on the train. That artifact is the Dial of Destiny of the film's title though it is generally referred to by another name: the Antikythera. Like the Spear of Longinus, the Antikythera is actually a real artifact though the film expands on it in a new way. Discovered in an ancient shipwreck off the coast of the Mediterranean island of Antikythera in 1901, the Antikytherian device is a series of discs that formed at least part of a complex machine that is believed to have been a computing device for calculating the movements of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars of the night sky. Some have speculated that it was the creation of the school of the third century BCE Greek Archimedes, the greatest scientific mind of his time. For the purposes of this film, the device is said to be a bit older and the actual creation of Archimedes. The script also provides another function for this device, namely to produce or predict fissures in time that could allow its user to travel back into the past. (continued)

It is for this purpose that Voller wants the Antikythera. Knowing the war is lost, he wants to use the device to travel back and change history and hence the outcome of the war. Once they learn that the Antikythera is aboard the train (and Indy discovers that the Spear aboard the train is a reproduction), Indiana and Shaw turn their attention to rescuing this artifact from the clutches of the Nazis. As it goes, this sequence is entertaining and a worthy introduction to the adventures of the Indiana Jones franchise. Much has been written and said about the de-aging process used to make Harrison Ford look like the 45 year old Indy in 1944. With the knowledge that the process was used I was consciously aware of it but didn't mind and if someone did not know better, the effect is quite good and might lead one to believe the sequence was filmed twenty-five years ago and edited out of one of the earlier films. Of course, the use of CGI and the look of the more modern cinematography would be a giveaway but the important thing is that it isn't distracting. Thankfully so, since it affords us this wartime adventure we never got during the years between production of the Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. After the opening sequence, the film picks up again in 1969, specifically in the days following the Apollo 11 Moon landing (Indy rides past Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins during the parade chase). It's a new world and a new time. Indiana Jones is teaching at a university in New York having apparently left his house and his job as Associate Dean at Marshall University sometime since the end of the last film. He lives alone in a NYC apartment and we see a document that reveals that he and Marion are divorcing in the aftermath of, as the movie reveals later, the loss of their son Henry, or Mutt as he preferred to be called (Shia LaBeauf's character from the last film). Mutt enlisted in the military, to spite his father as a mournful Indy claims, and was killed in Vietnam. This sobering reveal may seem out of place to some but provides the kind of necessary subtext for the film that drives the quest for the Antikythera. The world has changed and for many it has not been for the better. (continue)

Also in New York is Jurgen Voller. He's now working for the U.S. government and we're told he's been instrumental in the success of the Apollo program. This is based on reality too as many of the Nazis' rocket scientists like Werner Von Braun were given sanctuary by the U.S. so that they might work on America's space program. But as the nation celebrates the triumph of Apollo 11, Voller has learned that Helena Shaw, the daughter of Indy's friend from the opening sequence and played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is in New York and may know the location of the Antikythera. He and some of his associates are intent on finding the device and using it. While his CIA handlers fail to reign him and his cronies in, he makes a move to obtain the device. Voller's goal is to travel back in time and kill Hitler, believing that Hitler's personal mistakes cost Germany the war. His belief is remarkably accurate as historians have long debated and generally accept that Hitler's personal decisions were critical to Germany's loss. Whether the Nazis could have defeated the Allies once the economic strength of the United States was set against Germany is doubtful but Hitler's decision to stop the advance in France, allowing the British evacuation at Dunkirk, and his disastrous invasion of Russia were critical in sealing the German defeat. But the mistakes of the past are hardly limited to Voller's mind. For Indiana Jones, he is haunted by what was and what could not be as well. The double tragedy of the dissolution of his marriage following the death of his son has taken its toll on him. He's set to retire and the days of adventure are no more. It's a new world indeed and Indy feels he's a relic of the past. He's still teaching archaeology but now it's to a half-empty hall of disinterested students who neither hang on his every word nor swoon at their handsome professor with "Love You" written on their eyelids. He looks at the clock he's given at his surprise retirement party as the stark reminder of the passage of time and the effect is has (what he does with it elicited a laugh). I couldn't help but notice that his apartment is also devoid of the display of antiquities we saw at his house in Raiders. The study of the past is his profession but it's now become emblematic of loss as well. Youth, passion, love, and family -- time has taken all of them from him. (continued)

Some will find this sad and out of place in an Indiana Jones film but I rather liked that they've both recognized that Harrison Ford is older and that time passes and life changes. When Helena asks Indy what he would say to his son, I cried. Who among us who've suffered the loss of a loved one haven't thought about what we'd say if we had one more chance to speak to them? Who hasn't thought about what we'd like to change if we could go back in time, not just to keep them alive and near but to alter what we've experienced since their death? This was especially pronounced for me since I took my mother's urn with me to the theater. I'd promised to take her to this film when it was first announced and I wanted to keep my promise. Harrison Ford was her favorite actor and she loved the Indiana Jones films (Temple of Doom was her favorite). The last film she saw in a theater was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and while she'd rejected invites to go to other movies, when I suggested this film she said she would be willing; it was Harrison Ford in his best role after all. Losing Mom in 2020 didn't deter me from my intent to keep my word and the fact that this film addressed aging and loss make it all the more special to me. I think Mom would have agreed. Film can help us forget troubles and disappear into the fantasy of the story but they can also remind us that our experiences in life are shared by others and that pain and loss and the passage of time are universal to the human experience. We're not in it alone and I think Mom would have appreciated that the film acknowledged and respected this. Also, without giving away too much, the sight below from the airplane at the film's climax was exhilarating for me given my field. I had forgotten about rumors and photos from production which suggested this scene. The Indiana Jones films had never focused on an artifact from the Greco-Roman era and for a Roman historian like myself I was delighted that this era finally got its due. The ending, though, was the cherry on top. (continue)

The performances were all good. Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena was an excellent addition as she was a fully-developed character with a history, an actual personality, and growth that you want to see in a character. Her sidekick might not have been up to the standard of Short Round but still was good. Mads Mikkelson is good as Voller, showing the right amount of desperation and intellectual coolness that the character needed when he needed it. The sight of Voller and his associates in their Nazi uniforms was a chilling reminder of what they were and that Indy had faced them before; bringing the series full circle. John Rhys-Davies reprisal of Sallah is also a wonderful addition and his inclusion in the story further adds depth to his character and Indy. I also particularly liked that Sallah still enjoys singing songs from H.M.S. Pinafore! Of course, Marion's return was also great and I liked the callback to the scene on the Bantu Maru from Raiders. Karen Allen doesn't have much screen time but we feel in our hearts the same for her character as we do Indy; we love Marion and arguably the best moments in life are the quiet little moments with someone we love. Of course, the most important performance is that of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Ford and Indy are as inseparatable as they are iconic. No one else could play this role (nor should; take note Disney executives probably eager to reboot or remake the films). Acknowledging that Harrison Ford is older isn't a detriment to the film. Rather, it lends a greater humanity to the character. Arguably the best scenes in the entire franchise were those between Indy and his father in Last Crusade when we saw Indiana Jones as more than an action hero. Rather, we saw him as a human being and got an idea of how he became the person he was and how he longed for the approval and attention of his father that his dad had only reserved for his work. My favorite moment in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the scene when Indy looked at photos of his father and Marcus Brody and noted that the years had been rough. "We seem to have reached the point where Life stops giving us things and begins taking them away," he's told. Indy in this film has experienced this even more and neither Ford nor the script shys away from it. I can relate and empathize and it only increases my appreciation for the film and the character. He's been a part of my life since I was seven and a source of not only entertainment but memories of watching the films with my family that I cherish. At this point, Indiana Jones is like family. He's been there through good times and bad, the films have brought happiness and been a sanctuary when happiness was in short supply. (continue)

We only need to see Harrison back as Indiana Jones one more time. Not as the star of Indiana Jones 6. As the anchor in a film that launches Ke Huy Quan's Short Round franchise. Maybe an Oscar is proof enough that Ke deserved a blockbuster career of his own for the last 40 years. But if we're at a loss for what to do without Harrison's Indy, maybe it's not too late to change that. I'd rather see a whole new set of Short Round adventures than see some other chump put on the fedora and play a less-satisfying Indiana Jones. It would be so much closer to the heart and the spirit of the franchise. And if anyone could and would lean on a studio to make that happen, it'd be Steven Spielberg.
