There's another nod to Star Wars at the bridge - when Indy chases after the two swordsmen and suddenly stops, turns and runs from a hoard of them -- the scene is a nod to Han chasing the two Stormtroopers and suddenly stopping when he rounded the corner.

Temple of Doom holds a special place in my childhood with it being the first movie I remember seeing in the movie theater as a kid. When you're 7 years old and you see a movie with them eating monkey brains and a guy ripping the heart out of someones chest you think its the most bad ass movie ever.

Yep, beginning of Raiders it says it was 1936, the Shanghai scene in Temple of Doom said it was 1935, so chronologically it goes Temple, Raiders, Last Crusade and Crystal Skull

Having grown up in the 80s, this is the one I immediately think of when I think of Indiana Jones. The others were good, too, but this one just had a magic to it that seared it into my brain as a kid. It was so intense, and I love the score by John Williams. This one felt the most magical/fantastical of the Indiana Jones films.

The actor playing Short Round is Ke Huy Quan. He also played Data in the "The Goonies." Fun Fact: he never meant to audition for the role in this film. He was accompanying his brother to the audition. While they were waiting, Ke Huy was talking to his brother and telling him what to do in the audition. The casting director noticed him and brought him in to meet Spielberg and Ford. They liked him so much that they cast him.

Side notes/trivia: Kathleen Kennedy (one of the producers) plays one of the chorus girls in the opening scene. The Mythbusters tested out the falling inflatable raft myth on their TV show. Short Round IS Data from The Goonies. The 1980s saw Stephen Spielberg direct at least one movie a year for a solid decade. Marian and Indy broke up shortly after the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Temple of Doom takes place BEFORE Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Last Crusade and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull take place AFTER Raiders of the Lost Ark. Kate Capshaw (Willie Scott in the movie) and Stephen Spielberg met on set, and were married in 1991. The chilled monkey brains were bananas and strawberry jello.

Mine too. Just reading KZbin comments did I find out that people don't like this sequel/the girl. To me, Willie is super hot, def hotter than plain looking Marion. Even Harrison didn't have hots for her when some Marion fanboy asked him how lucky he was working with Karen Allen. So, can't blame Steven Spielberg casting (out of 200+ girls) and eventually marrying Kate Capshaw.

Me too although, I think a huge factor for it being my favourite is because this was the first one I saw. My parents took me to see it in the cinemas when I was 13. I then watched Raiders a few days later on television. (Back in those days it took film at least 3 years between cinema and TV broadcast. So the networks tied it in with the 2nd movie release.) It is funny how this was a prequel (of sorts) to the first film, so I saw them in what is technically chronological order! Kate Capsaw's character was annoying to me even on first viewing, but I think over time even more so. However, Harrison Ford who was just brilliant as Indy, whom I only knew of as Han Solo at the time. And Short Round, even though his character is a bit of an Asian cliche of the 80s and was placed in the story for us to connect with the storyline of the stolen kids, he shone brightly as Indy's "side kick". And so to this day I can look past Billy (Capsaw's) character and instead enjoy the moments she is tortured by the bugs, jungle creatures and, oh how can I forget! The brilliant palace dinner scene!

This was actually my favorite of the original Indiana Jones Trilogy, largely because of the banter between Indy and Willie. The reason the dates don't make sense is because "Temple of Doom" was a prequel. Finally, the "crocodiles" in the climactic scene were actually American alligators.

Raiders was one of the best action/adventure movies of all time. Crusade was a B grade film where Raiders was an A+. Temple was A-/B+ IMHO. There was no fourth film. It was just a bad nightmare.

Also the big diamond Dr. Jones was getting, was that part of the stones? They were looking for a few more, so maybe that was the tie in? Well, let's go over what made this movie what it is and what came out of it: 1. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were both going through divorces around the time this movie was made so both were in a dark place in their lives which is reflected in their work. 2. This movie lead to the creation of the PG-13 rating, which Speilberg suggested to the MPA when they were having trouble not making this movie R. 3. Speilberg later married Kate Capshaw - aka Willie. He would go on to say, "Jones didn't actually get the girl in this movie. I did."

And it also makes more sense for him to stick with Marion after Willie. If this woman had been a better match for Indy, the fans would have been divided or they had to kill Willie off to justify Marion being his main interest in the future. We don't like Willie because we're not supposed to. Just good writing. On the other hand, in Willies defense: Not everyone is suited for or want Indy's adventurous lifestyle, and Willie was forced into it. Their first meeting was Indy threatening to kill her with a meat fork. She has all the right to complain, but perhaps tone it down now and then...

Short round was played by Ke Huy Quan..this was his first movie and yes he was Data in Goonies , his second movie. Fun facts..Ke brother went to audition for this movie and he tagged along. He was helping him act out scenes when director saw him and gave him a chance and he won the role. Ke kinda quit acting around late teens. Worked behind camera for decades and finally came back to acting with Everything All at Once , which he won Oscar for!!

When you asked if the plot would tie back into the thing with Lao Che in the beginning, Indiana Jones was Spielberg & Lucas’ attempt to make James Bond-style movies and one of the ways they reference the 007 series is to always have the movies start at the end of a prior mission (like most of the Bond movies begin with an action scene wrapping up a mission before the opening credits roll). Like the next movie opens with a flashback to Indy’s younger days that’s only tied to the rest of the film by referencing his relationship with his father (and how he got his hat)

Another thing possibly lost on audiences is I heard the dinner scene was intended as sort of a joke, that this is what ignorant Americans think Indian people eat. Spielberg was not proud of this movie and from what he's said about it, it's hard to determine what was played straight, what was parody, and what might be excuses for things that didn't work.

Suddenly, she's a leading lady in a big budget Spielberg film? So yeah... she's just a TERRIBLE actress. Doesn't matter what script you hand her or how you direct her to play the role. She's not equipped to do any better. Pretty sure Spielberg figured out that her annoying screams were less annoying than her terrible line delivery. Lesson: Use a casting call... not a casting couch!

Fun fact. The English actor Pat Roach appears in this movie as two characters. He is also in Raiders as at least one character ... and he is in Last Crusade but only briefly. ln Raiders he's the 'boxer' that gets killed by the propeller on the plane. ln Temple of Doom he's the guy that gets hanged by the ceiling fan AND he's the big fighter in the mine that gets squished by the rollers. ln Last Crusade he's one of the two gestapo officers running on the ground past the luggage as the blimp takes off. l mention Pat because, apart from Harrison Ford, he's the only other actor that's in all three movies.

"Anything Goes" is a Cole Porter classic, exactly the sort of song she would have been singing in the 1930s Yes - the choreography is very remniscent of these 1930s musicals (I've seen nearly all of them now ... having reached 1940 in my lifetime Oscars challenge - to watch EVERY Oscar nominated movie in history.

Legend has it that on the first day of filming on the actual bridge(it is in Sri Lanka I think) Mr Ford ran thru the bridge screaming like a madman to show Spielberg that the bridge was safe to walk in.

The beginning is tied in with an episode from the "Young Indiana Jones" series where Indy is hunting for the Peacocks Eye. He finally got it in this movie.

Nice cameo: When Indie gets on the Lao Che plane, the two men at the door are Spielberg and Lucas. Marion is not around as this took place before the first film. The whole series was a nod back to the old weekly serials kids would go see in the movies. The beginning scene in this movie was a nod to the dance movies of the 1930's as well. (yes, that included the splits going in reverse too)

The beginning of the movie says it’s 1935 . Raiders happens in 1936. This is technically a prequel, which is why Marion is not mentioned. I think they wanted to show Indy was always the adventurer.

I know this got mixed reactions when it came out but I think over time people have realized that it’s legit a fantastic film. I think people were just put off by the fact that it felt so drastically different from the first as far as the tone goes…but it IS still an exhilarating adventure, with some elements of legit horror sprinkled in. And I’d even argue that this one is better in that Indy actually has a character arc in this one. He starts out only interested in the stone for “fortune and glory” but by the end realizes how much it means to the village. Saving the kids was the real goal. He had the chance to grab the stone and leave but he stayed to save them

When my dad showed this to me for the first time, I was mad at him because I thought he tricked me into watching James Bond (because of the tux). Once I heard the theme and saw Harrison Ford in his Indiana Jones getup I got a huge grin and was overcome with excitement. I haven't distrusted my dad since haha.

13:43 - during the shooting of this scene, when Ford flipped over this guy, he seriously injured his back. He was unable to shoot for a long time, that's why in some scenes his double took over. you can see him for instance in 16:10 . and in scenes around 21:48 there is a dark scar on Ford's back.

4:54-4:60 The two guys sitting with Lao Che at the club were his sons Chen and Kao. Chen was the one who shot and killed Indy’s friend Wu Han, and Indy retaliated by hurling a skewer of pigeon flambé at him. Indiana basically killed the son of a mob boss, which explains why the gangsters are still chasing him. That scene with them using the life raft as a parachute at 5:50 would never work in real life as it would be too unstable in free fall, and it’s highly unlikely you wouldn’t be able to land without serious injuries. Despite how much darker this film is compared to Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Thuggee Cult leader Mola Ram is one memorable villain, and seeing Indiana’s crew rescue hundreds of children from slavery is infinitely satisfying.

I was at an SF convention in the 80s and someone who worked on the movie was there talking about it. They said they were rehearsing the opening scene with all the showgirls dancing in a set right next to the set where they were, at the same time, filming the scene with the bazillion bugs. They had a bunch of bug wranglers -- guys with push brooms whose job it was to keep the bugs in the shot -- but sometimes a bunch of bugs would escape. The guy said you could hear the music, and the tap-tap-tappity-tap-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! and that's how they knew a bunch of bugs had escaped. :)

Fun Fact: The actor that welcomes them to the airplane in the beginning is Dan Aykroyd and the giant Thuggee that dies in the crusher was the same actor that played the giant Nazi soldier in Raiders of the Lost Ark that he fights near the plane and dies from the propeller blades. Willie, shes' definitely supposed to be an annoying character. It's done that way on purpose. I think most people can't stand her. But by the end of the film, after going through everything, she seems to have changed. So I think it was cool to show character growth.

The Temple of Doom takes place in 1935 and Raiders of the Lost Ark takes place in 1936. So, Temple of Doom is a prequel to Raiders even though it came out afterwards. It's still my favorite Indy flick, but, Raiders is overall better made and a REALLY close second for me. Each movie is kinda apples & oranges (pears & grapes, and...;).

@@mokane86 There was no PG13 back in Jaws' day. Jaws was initially rated R, either officially or unofficially. To convert it to PG, they made Spielberg cut out a few seconds of clear footage of the shark chomping down on the kid on the inflatable.

This movie was controversial at the time because it was SO intense...too intense for children who might have been taken to the film. A lot of parents were freaked out by the violence and darkness of the film. Spielberg has since expressed regret that he let it get "out of control", in that way. That said, It was fun watching it with you!

Trivia: those are not giant "vampire" bats, they're fruit bats. Regardless, you don't want to be under a mass of them flying, they "piss like a hot, stinking rain." One of the film makers from Bridge On The River Kwai said that in an interview. That film was done in Sri Lanka.
