The gross out dinner scene in "Temple of Doom" wasn't supposed to have anything to do with India as a whole. It was there to inform our hero's that something was amiss at the palace.

@fizz1580 Same here bro. Always been a James Bond, Indiana Jones and Star Wars fan. The best Indiana Jones films are the Original Trilogy. I like them all. My favorite Bond films are On Her Majesty's Secret Service, From Russia With Love, Thunderball, Licence To Kill, The Living Daylights, For Your Eyes Only, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger, Octopussy, Dr No, You Only Live Twice, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale. Yea, I likes old Bond films. They are better than the Craig ones

Great analysis today! One minor modification: While Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did indeed have mostly positive reviews, the movie underperformed at the box office. In fact, the movie finished second to Sex and the City on it's opening weekend and it never really recovered. I can't wait for your future film reactions and analysises! ❤

Thanks! The next franchise I'm covering will be a bit different, but I'm excited to try my hand at it, given that I've not seen too many others give it a once over.

Again, I don’t understand how you don’t have one hundred thousand subscribers, you are absolutely layered with your insight and I thoroughly enjoyed this as much as your Bond content (personal favorite, and PLEASE create more!) Indiana Jones was a part of my childhood as well, but in the 80s and I believe the only one I saw theatrically was Last Crusade. My absolute favorite is Temple of Doom. So, I was a little surprised by your opinions but listened and digested it all positivity, 😂 Couple of things, both Spielberg and Lucas were going through divorces and have admitted it came out in the much darker tone of the film. Also, the violence, child slavery, the heart ripping scene caused the rating of PG-13 to actually be created! I remember I was told I couldn’t see it at the cinema because my parents had heard it was so violent. But when it was on HBO a couple years later my dad was more than happy to watch it with me lol😂 and Raiders was the first movie my family ever rented for our new VCR, haha on a side note, unfortunately I couldn’t even force myself to finish watching Crystal Skull, so I really don’t think of it much, but your review has me considering another attempt. You are doing some amazing things with your content and please keep it up! Thank you, Chad

Why, thank you. I'm just grateful anyone decided to watch, let alone gain some virtual friends. I probably came off a little harsher on Doom than I intended, but my thoughts on the film are always based to some degree on the most recent experience I had with the film. If I watch Raiders or Crusade before it, then Doom's failings get highlighted for me more. I still like the film, and I'll happily watch it again, but I do think it's a weaker film. But hey, let's rejoice in the things we do like. In regards to Bond, I was actually working on two before I got to this one, but I ran into writer's block on one, and I remembered that The Dial of Destiny was coming out soon, so I pivoted to get this one out first. Don't worry, the next video will be a Bond one.

@@stephenjarvis534 and I will definitely look forward to your new Bond content when you release! I didn’t think you were too harsh on Doom and it makes complete sense the way you just explained. I agree, let’s celebrate what we like! Mr. Spielberg must, considering he’s been married to Kate Capshaw ever since! Thank you, it’s great to have new, friends...virtually or otherwise!

I love Willie Scott and I think she adds some much needed comic relief, countering the literal DOOM and gloom vibe. I also think it's important to remember that Temple is a prequel to Raiders and so I interpret Indy's attraction to her based solely on her looks as representative of his attraction to his brand of "archaeology" based solely on 'fortune and glory'. Just as the Sankara Stones come out of the adventure meaning something very different to Indy than they did at the start of the film, Willie enters the adventure unwillingly, and comes out the other side pretty badass. Both of these developments, to me, serve to teach Indy that good beyond monetary gain can come from his adventures.

Your comments on Last Crusade dooming the franchise are very astute. Spielberg made no secret that he created Indiana Jones in the first place because he couldn't make a James Bond film, and it showed in how independent ROTLA and TOD were from each other, much like every Bond film was until Craig's era. I adore Last Crusade and always have, but it is an even more final film than Return of the Jedi was a few years ago.

I grew up on the Indy trilogy. The Lost Ark was epic, the Temple was dark and gruesome, and the Crusade was amazing. Equal to Star Wars IV-VI.

Wonderful insights! You speak of lists changing as we, the viewers, change. Well, what changed most to me in the Indy series was how I viewed Willie Scott. In all my youth, I was as bothered by her character as the next person. As a young adult, I wanted to introduce my girlfriend to the then-trilogy. She didn't engage in Raiders at all, it wasn't bad, but it was just meh. Oof. Then we watched ToD... and she loved it. She loved Willie. Willie was the character who behaved like she would have in the depicted scenarios. Stuck in a jungle with creepy crawlies or in a temple of nightmarish apparitions. And she convinced me. I haven't been able to view Willie Scott in the same way since and she may now well be my favorite girl of the series. I know, I know... Indy movies make for an easy ranking to me, as it's 1, 2, 3. One interesting "phenomenon" I've encountered in the decades since first viewing them, was that when a few years passed without routinely rewatching them, it is a thirst for rewatching ToD that will bring me back to bingeing on them. Again, I really appreciated your insights, especially on the direction (or dead end) that Crusade took the series. Dial of Destiny has now arrived - I would love to see/hear your take on it!
@stephenjarvis534 Жыл бұрын
Why thank you. I'll have to keep that viewpoint in mind when I rewatch ToD next and see if my mind changes a bit on Willie. Regardless, I'm glad to hear she has her fans. As for Dial...meh. I was enjoying the first two-thirds alright (the first 25 minutes was the closest we've gotten to what I would have wanted from more films). Once we got into the third act and the use of the Dial, it really started losing me. I was surprised I was more OK with this than the aliens in Crystal Skull, but a certain character choice from Indy really frustrated me the first time. Everybody performs the material well. Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas and Toby Jones all deserved to be in this franchise and Mads in particular was a highlight. I'm indifferent to Helena, but it's not Phoebe's fault. It's always a thrill to see Harrison in the outfit and John Williams never misses. Overall, I think Crystal Skull comes together better on a storytelling basis, but I'd rather watch this one as it's a step in the right direction for what I want to see from Indy.

Raiders is my favorite movie of all time (together with the Godfather). Raiders is a movie you could watch over and over again and couldn't get bored of it. Same goes for Last Crusade but Raiders got the slight edge. Temple of Doom is also a great movie with a good story to tell but it doesn't have the same rewatch value as the other 2 of the trilogy. I personally think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull could have benefited from useing the City of the Gods script. Crystal Skull isn't as bad of a movie as a lot of people make it out to be but it is nowhere near the original trilogy. I'm excited but scared at the same time for Dial of Destiny, I really don't like what Disney did with the other LucasFilm property and hope that they don't make the same mistake again with my favorite franchise of all time.

The reviews for DOD are bad however critics always go super harsh. It will be rare that it will be close to being as good as the original trilogy however hopefully its better then The Crystal Skull. Only one month to go..

Have you played any of the Indiana Jones video games, and if so how did you like them? In typical LucasArts games fashion, they all have flaws but I think my favorite one is the first Tomb Raider copycat - Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.

I have indeed, and I almost considered covering a few within the video. I've played Fate of Atlantis, Emperor's Tomb, Lego Indy and Staff of Kings. Atlantis is probably my favorite, but I like Tomb and Lego as well. Staff of Kings was pretty frustrating at parts, but it had great potential.

Regardless, neither of the last two films were good send-offs for the character, and I wish they'd either have rebooted the character or left well enough alone.
