Not a single minute of Raiders is boring, but Last Crusade wins out for me for the following reasons: 1) Indy's backstory showing his fear of snakes, whip, fedora 2) Venice set-piece culminating in boat canal chase with another boat's propeller threatening to kill him 3) Bangs hot Austrian Elsa 4) Medieval castle set-piece where he escapes a burning room whilst tied to a chair 5) Motorbike & sidecar case where he jousts with a flagpole 6) Infiltrates a Nazi rally right in the middle of Berlin, comes face-to-face with Hitler, and gets his autograph 7) Zeppelin sequence which culminates in an airplane dogfight and later a plane-car chase 8) Battles a tank on horseback and destroys it by shoving a rock down its barrel (whilst Marcus and his dad are inside of the tank) 9) Meets a real, centuries-old Crusader Knight and claims the real Holy Grail 10) Before finally riding off into the sunset with his best friends and family. And all of this, all of this, whilst accompanied by his dad, who's played by none other than James Bond.

What makes Raiders special for me is the sense of mystery and danger about the ark. The macguffin and the chase to find it feels like it has heavier stakes than in any of the other movies, being a literal pandora's box of divine wrath. There's a balance between the wonder and fear of the unknown that Temple and especially Crusade don't have. Plus John Williams' "ark theme" is one of his best imo.

The Raft scene in Temple of Doom is weird, cause there are clearly scenes where they're sledding down the hill and it's a completely practical shot on location scene with the actors in the raft, and then there are these other shots where they clearly filmed it somewhere else and composited it into the mountains background which looks bad and didn't age well, which makes me wonder why they didn't shoot all of that scene on location.

For me the reason raiders is the best is the fact that the story centres around the significance of the ark itself; how it’s this artefact of such historical and spiritual importance that it adds intrigue and suspense to the plot. I love how each of the main characters ponders the weight and potential consequences of disturbing the ark could lead to. It just adds this special layer of the film the other movies just didn’t capture very well.

Like that the end of the Last Crusade is the best in the series, that Temple of Doom may not be as good as the other OGs but it used to be my favorite, and that Shia was actually a good character in Crystal Skull! I thought his banter and back and forth was tonally similar to Indys banter with his father and just gets forgotten because of all the bad decisions in that movie. Oh and im with u that the truck chase in Raiders is the best action scene ever (and now i feel like i gotta watch Fury Road again with you noting the similarities). But speaking of that truck chase, one thing I didnt get a feel for from your video is whether you enjoyed Raiders as much after the truck chase? Thats the weakest part of the movie for me because I think it lacks the energy of the rest of the movie but curious about your thoughts. Clearly the original 3 are on another level. The last two feel more like epilogues. The main problem is obviously that Indy could not be as heroic anymore. Other than that the writing and stories were much weaker. I do prefer Dial of Destiny over Skull because the story felt more like Indiana Jones, and it had that globe-trotting adventure aspect, taking place in several different locations like Raiders and Last Crusade. The MacGuffin was more interesting and I loved that it gave Indy a chance to actually witness a historical moment he was fascinated by. To me it felt much more like an appropriate send-off for the character, although I almost felt like it would have been more interesting and bold if he had been left behind as he wanted.

A great, well thought out and presented video review. Basically my same ranking. I rewatched Dial recently and I may like it better than Temple of Doom now, so I’d swap those two. Temple never sat right with me as it was such a let down from that first perfect film. It has its moments, but is overall just too gross for me. (At least we got PG-13 because of it). I liked the de-aged Indy opening in Dial and (while dark since it’s nighttime) it looks really good to me. I liked overall how they handled his age (since I’m getting up there too) and felt there was still plenty of action even without fist fights. I’m also a huge fan of the Young Indy series (even with its production limitations) Anyways, thanks for sharing.

I don't often comment on videos but for Indy I'll make an exception. Great video, it's a delight to see a video from someone who obviously loves the subject. In ranking Indy videos there are really 2 questions: is Dial of Destiny above Crystal Skull and Is Raiders No 1 or Last Crusade (and there are many who would argue Last Crusade). I'm with you 100% on the top three. Personally I would put Crystal Skull above Dial of Destiny but not by much. I agree with your good points on Crystal Skull and while the later half gets sillier as it goes along and the great John Hurt is wasted it does at least try to have the fun and joy of the first 3 movies. This is something I think Dial of Destiny sadly lacks. There is no fun in watching a great hero you have loved for years decline. Getting old is s#!t (to use Indys phrase "trust me"). This is not a serious drama its (supposed to be) a fun adventure film that's what people wanted to see. The script is weak, too much CGI and the villains are flimsy compared to those of the past, a trait it shares with Crystal Skull. The peaks and troughs of Mangolds films can be extreme and he isn't up to the task here. One point you made that I totally agree with is that Harrison Ford still looks awesome in the outfit. But I think the whole film was a mistake. The wonderful Mads Mikklesons character is underdeveloped and Boyd Holbrook is criminally wasted. Plus the simple murder of someone who was totally innocent was unnecessary (at the college) it did not further the plot in any way (unlike Temple of Doom). The bad guys are led by an ex Nazi we know they're bad! Temple of Doom has my second favourite score behind Raiders with Last Crusade a close third. I don't really have the issues some have with Willie but maybe that's due to having a crush on Kate Capshaw at the time. 😉 I loved your point about feeling like you were watching something you shouldn't with the darker parts. I would have felt that way if I'd seen it as a child. Last Crusade for me is a joy from start to finish. Heck its Indiana Jones + Sean Connery!! And that cut to Marcus is my favourite in the whole series. I am happy to disagree with Quentin Tarantino on this one (he hates it). And then there's Raiders. A perfect film indeed. I remember seeing early photos before the movie came out. I couldn't wait to see it. And It was everything I'd hoped for. It has probably the greatest opening scene of any movie. Just classic. (The unconnected opening adventure is taken from the Bond movies, a direct inspiration on Indy according to Spielberg & Lucas but you probably know that) Its still my favourite Harrison Ford. While I agree that the end of Last Crusade has a more emotional impact i still prefer Raiders conclusion. I love the foreshadowing of the supernatural by Marcus, Sala and the crate in the cargo ships hold (I love that moment and the rat) The twist where things suddenly turn dark in the ceremony and the consequences of opening the Ark have a biblical Lot's wife tone befitting the Ark. While that final shot in the warehouse is brilliant, again unexpected. And with Raiders no one expected it to go as far as exploding heads, hell this isn't Scanners! It was a genuine shock at the time whereas you knew watching the sequels that they were prepared to go that far in an Indy film. Obviously people may not agree with my points, everyone has their own opinion, and I respect their right to do so. At the end of the day if someone is watching this video then one thing we all share is a love of Indy. Sorry for the long comment. Great video and not shit at all. 👍👍

@@EpicJoshua314 They completely undo Indy’s happy ending from Crystal Skull. They make him a miserable, old loser who downgrades from a two story house and a position as Assistant Dean to Marshall University where he made his career to living in a crap apartment and going back to working as a teacher at a college where his students are clearly not interested in what he has to teach them. He gets made-fun-of by a woman who lies to him and backstabs him several times and a punk kid who’s a sorry replacement for Short Round. The whole time-travel deal is just another sci-fi gimmick that doesn’t belong in series about religious artifacts with known history and mythology to back the theories of them having mystical powers. And Indy would not still be skeptical of magic being real after everything he’s experienced. And they overuse the cgi more so in this than Crystal Skull. Plus it wasn’t directed by Spielberg. Karen Allen said that Marian had a bigger role in the film when Spielberg was directing it. Which means we might have gotten a film where she and Indy got to go on one final adventure together.

Movies like Crystal Skull are proof that Blanchett is an overrated actor and hams it up as often as she turns in adequate work. Not that she's the biggest problem in Crystal Skull (the entire plot is stupid and has no stakes), but she doesn't help to elevate what's there AT ALL. When the movie came out, people blamed Shia even though he's the best thing about the movie. No one talked about how bad most of the other cast performances are. People are dumb.

Blanchett is an amazing actress check out TAR. Spalko is just a zero depth cartoon character
@monovision56628 күн бұрын
@@HNfilms I've seen her in tons of things. She's often not particularly great. She overacts in Lord of the Rings / Hobbit movies even. She's outright bad in Thor Ragnarok, playing a caricature for no reason, with zero nuance at all. She does that a lot. Even in her turn with Wes Anderson, her performance is the weakest element of Life Aquatic.

@monovision566 dont rlly agree with any of that but you should still 100% watch Tar

Hot take: I like Dial of Destiny and Kingdom better than Temple of Doom. The last ones are far from the quality of the magnificent Raiders and Last Crusade, but I like Temple of Doom the least out of the 5 movies. Temple of Doom feels like a script for a different saga in which the main character was swapped by Indy in a last-minute draft.

I can't take someone seriously who puts Dial of Destiny above Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Also, Grand Moff Tarkin looked great in Rogue One, so... up your's.

1. Temple of Doom ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ 2. Raiders of the Lost Ark ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ 3. Dial of Destiny ☆ ☆½ 4. Last Crusade ☆ ☆½ 5. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ☆ ☆½ They only really got it right twice. But still they should've made more movies in the 90s. Stand alone adventures, all new supporting casts. No daddy stuff, no cutesy prologues. Last Crusade took away the edge and mystery.

I agree. Crusade is where the edge started coming off. And was totally gone by Skull. As many problems as Dial had, they did bring back a little bit of the grit.

As much as I live LC, giving Indy a backstory and continuity locked the series into a formula that every movie has had to be locked into. Pulp characters function better without that baggage.

My personal ranking: Doom Raiders Crusade Crystal Skull Dial
@BuckeyefarmerАй бұрын
Dial of Destiny was so bad it made Crystal Skull look good. That's my opinion on it, but I find both to be generally unwatchable. To me, Last Crusade edges out the original. It has a better story and a better ending overall. You can't beat the 3 challenges and the emotional element of them shooting his father to force him to help them get to the grail. 5. Dial of Destiny 4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 3. Temple of Doom 2. Raiders of the Lost Ark 1. The Last Crusade.

Dial of Destiny is the worst!! Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still has Indy being an action hero, not a pathetic, sad, miserable looser who gets sidelined in his own movie. Crystal Skull is not the best, but I would choose that over Dial of Destiny any day.

5/5 tier: 1. The Last Crusade (One of my favorite movies) 2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (The perfect embodiment of action-adventure serials) 3/5: 3. Temple of Doom (I’ve always enjoyed the action and most of the second half. Couldn’t stand Kate Capshaw or the overly depressing tone.) 2/5: 4. Dial of Destiny (First 20 minutes are fantastic in spite of the de-aging technology. Everything else is just Kingdom of Crystal Skull on repeat.) 1/5: 5. Kingdom of the Crystal Head Vodka (Utterly pointless, doesn’t understand the concept of Indiana Jones, the second half is one of the most horrendous halves I’ve ever seen for a movie, and it just felt like Spielberg on auto-pilot. No passion or creativity. Just pure slop.)
