We continue our look at the Indiana Jones film series with the second installment, the prequel Temple Of Doom. A meaner, screamier and more culturally insensitive movie that introduces audiences to Ke Huy Quan's Short Round and Kate Capshaw's Willie Scott. Filled with heart pulling, brain eating, bridge cutting madness this entry managed to also herald in the PG-13 film. Thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage review

In the script for the famous dinner scene there was a line where Indy tells them to ignore the gross food because he knows they are trying to scare them away. This is proof that they never intended it to be cultural accurate food but the line was taken out because it gave away too early that not everything was right with the palace as the headquarters of the cult. "INDIANA: Even if they were trying to scare us away, a devout Hindu would never touch meat. (looking around) Makes you wonder what these people are."
@esmeecampbell7396

I always thought that explanation was still a bit weak. I mean, the cult just straight up tries to kill Indy afterwards, what are they doing trying to “scare him off” with weird food? Shouldn’t they be trying to keep a low profile? Indy and friends aren’t the only outsiders there, that child prince didn’t know about the cult. Wouldn’t he also be suspicious of the weird food?

Another piece of trivia: Amrish Puri, the Indian actor who played the evil Mola Ram, had a full head of hair when he was cast. Spielberg asked him to shave his head for the role and he did, obviously. Amrish decided that he liked the look, and kept his head shaved for the rest of his life.

During the mine cart scene, at one point the cart stopped prematurely and threw the two actors forwards, though they were uninjured other than Harrison Ford’s knee, which eventually needed a rod put in it before continuing filming. That’s why the working title of the film was rod-knee.

I think the difference is Raiders has a few moments where the horror suddenly gets ramped up to 11. While Temple of Doom just constantly has this overall gritty, horror movie vibe. So as a kid while the melting faces in Raiders was by far more terrifying than anything in Doom, Doom had low levels of creepy horror permeating the whole runtime. So I preferred Raiders where I could close my eyes at the end instead of closing them the whole time.

I agree with James that the bridge cutting scene is the best Indiana Jones moment. Indy is seemingly impossibly trapped with no way out but to surrender but then he throws down the most insane card not in the deck. It really says a lot about Indy as a character and what he'll do when backed into a corner. Indy telling Short Round in Chinese what Indy is about to do and him not hesitating is such a great relationship moment. "Hang on lady. We going for a ride." is such a great line. S-tier action movie suspense moment that cemented Indiana Jones as a character for me. As a kid I was so excited when this movie came on TV. When we started renting videos I remember my mom thinking it was unpleasant and gruesome and she didn't understand the appeal when I chose this movie. But I thought it was so fun with the monkey brains, mine cart chase, and the opening club fight and the raft slide. I was totally blind to all of the aviation errors.

While I don’t think it’s the best film in the franchise, it’s possibly my favorite. I think it has the best music hands down, and Indiana Jones feels like a true 80s action hero in this movie. He’s ripped and he’s killing everyone without hesitation. That reveal shot when he punches the guard across the floor is possibly the most badass shot of Indy ever. I love the dynamic and chemistry between Indy and Short Round, their relationship is quite touching, and the darker themes are actually really cool to me. I appreciate that they took a risk and had a totally different aesthetic for the second film. And yeah, that bridge sequence is just fucking incredible “Prepare to meet Kali… in hell!”

My kids watched this with the baby sitter one time when my wife and I went out for the first time alone in forever. The kids movies were in a certain area, the ones that kids arent supposed to watch, were on the shelf under the stairs. Kids new that, they convinced the baby sitter to watch this. And then we got a call from them freaking out and wanted us to come home. It was the ripping of the heart out of course. All we said was, " we told you, and we arent coming home" And enjoyed the rest of our night

Interesting trivia tid bit I stumbled across; Originally the antidote was supposed to be a bigger plot point in the film. However they ran into issues with the glass vials as they broke really easily. This meant they needed to keep getting more made up and critically they needed to source more blue liquid to fill them. Unfortunately the dye they used to colour it that particular shade of blue was really hard to source and they had to exhaust a lot of options gathering it. Ultimately this led to the ditching the antidote as such a critical plot point and ended up hard pivoting to the temple thing. Interestingly it did lead to a brief period where the working title for the movie was Blue Harvest, which could have been an inside joke from George Lucas.......

Nah, I reckon you were alright. I mean my stepdad was putting these movies and Star Wars on for me as a kid, I mean like five years old, and I didn't know until I was in high school about a lot of stuff about these movies. Basically wondering why Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker never met up or things like that. I was so hyped when Darth Vader was all over the packaging for Star Wars toys. Also I have an auditory processing disorder, so dialogue was something I basically never took in as a child, I was definitely a visual movie watcher. My thing was basically "i have no idea what's happening or why, but I'm having a great time." That's actually kind of what helped me understand three act structure as a young kid though, because I would just sense "okay this is the part of the movie where this is the feeling even though I don't know a damn thing anyone is saying or what the actual story is."

There's some commentary for The Last Crusade that the villains, antagonists, or dangerous and morally ambiguous characters are visually marked with a flower of some sort, usually red and worn on a jacket... which is interesting because lookit what Indy's wearing in Temple of Doom's Shanghai prologue.

I just recently rewatched the trilogy with the family last month. I had to rent each one on Vudu because I wasn't paying for the 4 movie bundle and it wasn't streaming for free anywhere. Then right after we finished The Last Crusade, they put them all up on Disney plus (which is where I started looking in the first place). I swear, the universe is just trying to piss me off sometimes with that kind of bad timing haha. But I was able to get my 21 year old to watch them and see how much more fun movies were back in the day. The stunts alone are more thrilling than most movies today because it was before green screen everything and the stunt people had real danger to worry about. It really is Harrison Ford going under the truck in Raiders. That scene blew his mind haha.

Mola Ram is probably my favourite villain in all Indiana Jones. I was forever trying to imitate the heart rip as a kid. Short Round was an equal highlight of this film. I do appreciate this one more for not being a generic 'Nazi as bad guys' film. Unlike the other two of the original trilogy. It's funny, when I watched Everything, Everywhere All at Once. I didn't immediately recognise Quan. Then he pulled an action pose and I immediately blurted out "Short Round!".

So I decided to rewatch these over the past week alongside my Indian gf who’d never seen them. I warned her about the (overt) racism in it, but maaaan I forgot about a few bits. “Oh yeah, chilled monkey brains. Totally normal for a heavily vegetarian culture. You just explained to me how communion works. Why are we depicted sacrificing people? Christianity is LITERALLY about a blood sacrifice! …the stunts were pretty cool though and I love Shortround.”
@bethanychatman9531

Yep, just blatant racism. You're also correct about Christianity, sacrificing animals and even people at times are big things done in the beginning of the Bible. They sacrificed to God a lot.
@johnb1150

It's not racism in the slightest, do people like you even understand what racism is, it's a fear or loathing of another race it's not actively featuring that race in a film, and none of you are obviously aware of the fact a thughee cult existed in India and THAT is what is being depicted, not a depiction of Indians in general. Do your research before making uninformed knee jerk reactions rather like James in the video.

Of all the easter eggs and references in Star Wars these days to Indiana Jones, I think Temple of Doom actually gets the most mileage despite being the one in the trilogy that is least received. The opening number was recreated in Clone Wars, the deal with a criminal in a club named after a character from a different universe was in Bad Batch, Clone Wars had the slave arc where someone's always wailing in pain in the background, Bad Batch also had something like it where a bunch of kids are forced to be enslaved and there's even an inverse where the heroes surround the villain on a bridge, Jar Jar Binks and Mace Windu basically do the whole temple bit in Clone Wars, too, it's even surrounded by lava, and the Stones can be found in the antiquities shop in Andor, Bad Batch even has a rail car chase over underground chasms, and I'm sure there's more I'm just not remembering at the moment. Like yes, there's a Fedora here (Pablo's Pawn Shop, Clone Wars), a Crystal Skull there (Trandoshan Trophy Room, Clone Wars), a Fertility Idol (Antique Shop, Andor), the Holy Grail (Thrawn's Office, Rebels), the Staff of Ra (A Senator holds it, Clone Wars), the Twi'leks even have a version of the Ark of the Covenant( Ryloth, Clone Wars), but those are more just things to throw in the background, I'm talking homages and recreations of scenes have occurred in Star Wars animation more from Temple of Doom than any other Indiana Jones movie. In Rebels there's a good punching sequence between Zeb and a Trandoshan, that's an homage to the action with the accompanying music, and Bad Batch also does the Name of God puzzle from Last Crusade, that episode (Entombed) was just one big homage to Indy, but Temple of Doom seems to hold a much more special place in the hearts of the animators to have so many recreations of scenes and not just adding things to the background.

This movie has such a great pacing. The entire opening until they get to the village is a fun ride. The scene when Willie has to rescue indy and Shorty in the trap was hilarious and full of tension. Once Shorty wakes Indy up with the torch the rest of the movie is a huge action-packed thrillride. Raiders had the better characters, the better overall story, romance and a more interesting artifact. But Temple is the better action-movie (and had the best "comedy" compared to Raiders and Crusade) . I put TEMPLE (as well as KotSC) over Last Crusade in my rankings!
