Hi Jack, Thanks for the feedback! To display scales, go into Preferences. Under the Map tab, look for Truck POI icons and turn those on. You can tap the blue box in the upper right corner and select the time to display a larger clock, or choose elevation. It looks like you might need a new MCRA! With the 2013 version, the page references will match the ones you see on your device. We’ll be in touch via email. Thanks again, The GPS team at Rand McNally

When you use a GPS keep it cool, it will lead you in circles when they get hot. I have a AC vent pointed towards the GPS in the summer works great. Hope this helps, works for me. They also consume a lot of power keep them plugged in.

You're about Try the red mcnally Over drive 8 Pro. It shows all your way stations and picnic tables and also has a clock that is large enough to read at about 25 points

I have a question about the mileage tracking features. I'm an O/O and am looking for an easier way to do fuel tax but not have big brother watching the clock so to speak.... Do you use the mileage tracking feature? If so does it track just by day or minute to minute & how does the download to excel look? Thanks!

Great review, I just got a 520 for Christmas and love it. I can select elevation as an option in my upper right blue block. Don't know if that's different in the 720. I heard the only difference is screen size.

I have found that Rand McNally is a lot better than the truck's onboard computer navigation system. I have been driving for a short amount of time, but have learned that I have to use a different system than what's on a truck. How many find that the truck will tell you to exit when you shouldn't?

Thanks so much Indiana jack. I know you don't respond to your subscribers questions or feed back (or at least mine) but I appreciate what you do and post on youtube. (You got me into trucking) I purchased the Rand Mcnally 720 and I am very happy with it other than the first time I used it out of the box it put me a 7500lb road in henrico VA and I thought the local use only sign meant (since I had never been in that city before or state) I was good to go, but local law enforcement was waiting in the weeds (at the corner) I no sooner turned on to the road and the beautiful blue lights lit the back of my empty trailor. The local lumber yard had been abusing their privilege and I got caught in this Hatfield vs McCoy situation and got slapped with an overweight ticket. Does Rand Mcnally offer any recourse for situations like mine or am I stuck with the fine? Thanks so much for all you do for trucking. Mike6

Thanks for watching Mike. All of the GPS systems that I have used and even paper maps in the olden days cannot replace calling the customer first and asking them for specific truck routing. Every time you log into all the GPS units they make you except the terms of their liability and I would imagine that covers them in circumstances like yours. From time to time I struggle with the same thing that you do.

Dan, This unit is not a good unit to keep your HOS on. It does keep track of your hours but you still have to log them on a DOT log. I use another program for that which I am going to review soon.

Jack how long did yours end up working for? I bought the TND 710 about 2 years ago and the thing took a shit on me last week, it worked good but after only 2 years and 400 dollars spent its not even powering up. Is Rand Mc Nally worth another try or should I go with another brand?

I have this same unit and its turned into a pain in the ass and I cant get any help from RN with it. Had it less then a year and its developed a major issue. After 2 hours it shuts down on me; even when plugged in so I have to unplug it and hit the reset switch then plug it back in to recharge for at least 6 hours to use it again. And as of late they maps are not up to date and I've found myself on restricted routes a few times this year following it and I update it monthly! Though it does make trip planning fuel points and mandatory loss of revenue breaks a lot easier and faster than going to the Atlas; and the wifi hotspot helps a lot too! In the map settings you can set it to show the scales under the POI settings!

Also, i bought a 700 series about 2.5 years a go, i registered it, an throw my receipt away, last year they had a deal if you have your receipt with the unit you could trade it end for a special deal for a new unit. I thought if you register it you didnot need the receipt. I was wrong. Brand new, i paid 550. for the 700. They said i was screwed and would not help me.

Jack, my company is very particular about trip and dispatch reporting for tax purposes. Does it track TND's? How long does it store them? Does it break down by state, toll vs. nontoll, and tell you the roads you were on? Do you have to use it's route for it to track the TND? This could be a huge time saver for me, any help would be great, thanks.

Hi jack. I'm a charter and commuter bus driver and really like the fetures in this unit, but I'm a bus driver who may one day go straight truck expidite. As you know there are places a bus can go that trucks can't. Does this GPS have vehical selection that offers a bus or straight truck configuration. All the gps's I know of for busses don't have the fetures that this unit has, fetures I really like.

I found the GPS quite useful and accurate. However, the virtual speed screen does not work as well as my car's Garmins do, (I have 3. 1450, 1690 and the 3790.) Anyway, when I set my cruise say, at 65 and remain there on level road, the max speed shows that momentarily then goes all over the place showing my max speed around 77 mph! Great, my truck isn't set at that. It's set at 67 mph! Another thing is the logs. Hauling hazmat we can't be off duty but when you change the status from driving to on duty, it magically changes to off duty or DOT Break after 15 minutes and sometimes change from loaded to empty! Anyone have dibs on Cobra's 8000 HD or Garmin's Diezl 760 LMT?

I've had this unit for 2 months now and am pleased with it. However the speaker which was very loud to begin with after a month went by it just went out. Called Rand about this issue and they want me to mail it to them where they would keep for about 2 months to fix. It is not NYC friendly and you really cannot use this unit there if you drive a 53/102, hard to explain just have to see it in action for yourself to understand. I still like this GPS as it is my first ever, but cost quite a bit.

Could someone like myself for instant use the Wi-Fi off his/her phone as to pare it to the RN-gps unit? And keep it on through out the trip going in route, meantime having it always plugged into your cigarette lighter charging it continuously? Seems my 510model...needed to be unplugged at peak charged and shut off ? Just wondering of your experiences with it. Also I may add is how to get the address in without the prediction of their alphabet used? Like my shippers address would be an avenue! Not a street, place, or road. Why can they RN-GPS have it a full alphabet to work from instead of thier own. But a warehouse to warehouse is usually intakes by their standards but if ones doing RGN trailer delivery of equiptment hauled to a specific area...one may not get there using a gps like the RN-GPS. But of course it will get you to the closest town...maybe. Then you would have to call their fire dept. For other instructions on thier route to take it. Just saying. Why can't RN-GPS keep it simple? C-ya. ;)

I spent 23 years working for 2 very large companies and can count on 1 hand the operators who could even text on a cellphone, not to even mention operating laptops,GPS,s and smartphones. Most truckers are still resisting the technology which is indeed a mistake.

Hi Indiana Jack, we are having a heck of a time trying to download the dock onto our PC. The installation wizard does not want to recognize the device for some reason. Thankfully it still works as a GPS but we want to sync it with the dock software and cannot find enough info about it online. Any suggestions?

The indicated speed on the GPS is more ore less exact, compared with the vehicle speedometer. If it wasn't, the GPS wouldn't guide you to the right spot.

Hello, I just tested a new 720. I'm disappointed. I've been testing in Western-Canada. All speed limits shown are wrong. Instead of 100km/h it shows 99, if it's 90 it shows 88 and so on. I drove a Freightliner, loaded with an 53' trailer. Guess what, at the end of my trip, it showed 156km/h top speed. I also drove into our yard in Calgary (in an industrial area). The 720 didnt have any data of this area although it's already build more than 1 year ago. I wouldnt call the data up to date then.

Probably the reason it isn't good for NYC is the 1 foot or more difference NYC uses. I run alot of NYC and 12'4" bridges I go under with my 13' 6" trailers.

Voice recognition would be a great feature on any Sat-nav so you could easily go thru different features/pages or re-program without touching the screen whilst driving. Have you ever tried downloading "fun voices" of well known people?, how about Donald trump! , i have "Ozzy Osbourne" on my Tom Tom!..

Garmin DEZL does that. I just say "Voice Command" and it brings up prompts. I read out an address, it finds it, say navigate, and it asks if it is to be a new route, next stop, or last stop. Its nice when driving and I need to find a truckstop or something.
