While on a trip and the truck is in motion see how the new GPS handles and what the truck driver actually experiences. Also see some of the highlights and their benefits to you. Should you upgrade to the new model?

I'm always in aw of what and how well these new GPS'S can do, I've never owned one, for one thing when I was driving they didn't have them so I just used my ole' Rand McNally truckers map (bible). You know come to think of it I don't even think they had cell phones back when I was driving, I thought I was living in high cotton just to be able to use the email feature of my company's QCom to send mails to my wife when she was at home and not on the truck with me. As always Jack I enjoyed this film as I do with all your movies ..... keep the bugs off the glass and smokie off your a**.

This is called a truckers GPS but Rand has designed it for Motor Homes also. We have a 42 ft Fleet-wood Revolution tag axle and have used a Garmin but an older auto type. This one is fabulous in allowing you to view the 7 inch screen which is set farther from the driver on the dash as well as POIs truck stops and other options to download. Makes driving a big rig even more fun.

What's awesome about these is how malleable they are...so you can alter some of the appearances and functions to suite your taste. The biggest problems I have had with mine had to do with charging it. I found that powering it with a cigarette-lighter plug unit gave off a ton of interference for the CB so I started running an A/C cord off my inverter and that worked a lot better....which is an odd thing for a mobile thing like a GPS unit. I can't overstate how awesome it is to be able to access map layers from the internet and add dumb little custom stuff like Olive Garden locations. I ate at a few Olive Gardens just because Randy (my gps has a name) showed me there was one nearby. I had a big ambitious project in mind of finding all the locations of all the professional baseball and hockey teams (major and minor leagues) and trying to have an idea if there was a game nearby when I had a 34 or whatever. Custom map layers can add an awful lot of function...and add some quality of life to your trucking.

I see this is a rather older video post, but in case it has not already been mentioned. you can use ANY power cord provided it has two things. #1 it has to have the same receptacle (Plug) design and #2 the power rating is the same. For example; if the original unit has a mini usb and the rating is 12v 2a (amps) then any mini usb power unit will work as long as it is also a mini usb rated at 12v 2a. All power units will have the power rating printed somewhere on the unit housing. You CAN use power units with a higher amp rating because the connected device will only draw what it needs. Units with a higher amp rating just means it is capable of supplying up to that amount of current. The voltage however needs to be the same and cannot differ from the device requirements. So a mini usb charger rated at 12v / 2a can use a replacement 12v / 3a if that is all that is available.

The setting for the junction view can be changed. From "Home Screen" (Truck Tools, Go to Map, Choose Dest) Select Preferences bottom left, then Route tab at top, then Down Arrow at bottom 2x (can also choose avoidance preference here, toll booths, dirt roads, U-Turns, etc.) Will be the very last choice, Junction view. Minimum is 1 Mile though, that's kinda a bummer. You can also hit the "Swooping Arrow" on the bottom left to back out of the junction view when it pops up on the display. Will take you back to regular map view with speed limit, direction, etc. You can also change distance alerts for Weigh Stations, State/Country Borders, Construction, and others. From "3 Button" Home screen, Truck Tools (click), Warnings, and select. Can also choose audible warning, visual warning, both, or none. Can also select if it will be a small banner on the bottom of the screen, of a full display pop up with the alert.

'Paris, Texas' is also the name of a classic movie by Wim Wenders. This movie also has a nice Ry Cooder soundtrack. Worth watching since it certainly not a stereotypical hollywood movie. About the GPS: they have come a long loooong way. Back in the early 90's a system like this needed a XT type computer and you had to change CD-Rom at each friggin border. Now these systems even have internet connectivity and i suppose it gets automatic map updates whenever the unit is able to connect to wifi. I used to work for a mapmaker back in the 90's. If the system gives you false advice it probably is a map coding error that slipped through quality control.
@MrJohnnyScrabble9 жыл бұрын
Instead of having the main map so zoomed out, you can have it to a 3D view closer zoomed in, and if you want to see your route on the map, Click the 2nd tab on the right with the 3 check marks and lines, and Route Display Options, Summary Map View. I like to have mine in the 3D view all the time "Following" me, and will use the summary map view if I wanna see an overview. All again, driver preference. Unit will also record Loaded and Empty miles, Fuel, and several other options. I'm a new guy out here, and yes I know how to use a map. But with technology today, just about every driver has one. I use it as a turn by turn guide, compare it to customer directions, and always follow customer directions if they differ.

My TND 730 took a dump last year so I upgraded to the 740. Its been great so far.
@cotterpin64066 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your honesty, it's appreciated. Mine is still going strong and still works like it did when it was brand new. I didn't have all those battery issues that a lot of my friends had and I think it is because I also bought a 110-volt plug-in accessory at the same time I purchased my TND and used that 110-volt plug-in plugged into an extension cord that was plugged into my inverter. I am wanting to upgrade because mine is getting old although it still works wonderfully but when it gets to be this old and when you watch all your friends TND 730s all bite the dust, you start wondering when your turn is coming up next. However, all my friends complain that the text size and new button on their new TND 740 displays are far too small to read and to press while driving and they all hate that magnet mount because their TND 740s keep falling on the floors or their dashes while they are driving. Hence, I have been holding out in the hopes that TND 740 goes back to the TND 730 display and goes back to the old mount. However, I haven't heard anything about that. Thus, I may have to give Garmin a try. We'll see.

Hello, even if it's not the right place, I'v got a question. In the US, if someone rides a truck with a pre emission engine, is he disadvantaged in any form? ( But, perhaps he has got a better engine) I ask beause in Germany, a truck which isn't following the newest emission regulations is charged with extra road charge and taxes. The older the engine, the higher the toll and taxes. There are guys who have to pack in because of that. Thanks for answering. Keep it up!
