To clear up one point. It was Peeta who made the painting of Rue for his skill test. To show the game makers how awful they are. And to remind Katniss who the enemy is when her turn was. In the books the Game makers tried to cover it up before it was her turn.

They didn’t try, they succeeded in covering up so Katniss didn’t see what he did at all, she just knew that peeta was in there for 40 minutes when it should be 15 and has visibly angered and disturbed the gamemakers and Katniss panics since she knows peeta has upset them, so she decides to do something to get the attention off of him and onto her instead

It is heartbreaking to realize that Johanna lives with the fact that she refused to be a ''good'' girl to the Capitol and lost everyone and closed her heart

The love triangle is definitely more confusing in the movies. In the movies, you get the scene of Peeta and Katniss discussing their favorite colors but that’s really it to show their growing friendship. In the book, there’s a whole lot more of Katniss and Peeta bonding in the Victor’s Village before the Quarter Quell is announced. It really builds their friendship so that by the time you get to the beach kiss, it’s very obvious that Peeta IS the one that Katniss needs, that she will be completely devastated and lost without him. And then immediately after that, she loses him to the Capitol.

I think Katniss - but especially the romance stuff - is harder to understand in the films than in the books because we don't get to hear Katniss' inner monologue. With Gale it was clear in the books she doesn't love him but he does love her (she sees him as a best friend or brother) but not getting to hear the thoughts in her head makes the kiss etc. much more confusing. And the stuff about the lightening makes more sense in the book too. Beetee got hurt because he was trying to destroy the barrier like Katniss did but he was using a small spear so was in much closer range and the lightening wasn't actually there when he did it (its been a while since I read the books so other people can probably better elaborate about what he was doing). Katniss saw what he had done with the spear and that's where she got the idea for the arrow. She figured out his plan and copied him but did it with a bow so most of the impact was far away from her.

Katniss and Gale grew up together, and had been friends for years. I think Gale wanted to move that friendship into a relationship, but Katniss was never much of a 'people' person, and was inexperienced at relationships. Katniss and Gale both tended to have impulsive fiery personalities, and a relationship probably wouldn't have worked for them anyway. Peeta was much more of a 'people' person, and his personality had a more calming effect on Katniss. Still, the relationship dynamic was something Katniss was inexperienced at, and was probably why Katniss was hesitant to get too involved with either Peeta or Gale. The victors didn't exactly enjoy the easy life. Sometimes President Snow would use them to 'entertain' certain rich friends of his. Any victor who refused would be personally punished or have members of their family killed. This was why Heymitch was always a broken mess, and were some of the 'secrets' that Finnick was talking about

If I’m correct Peeta saved Katniss life with the bread when they were 11, and Katniss didn’t meet Gale until a couple of months later when she was 12 and gale was 14 and they became friends through meeting in the wood’s because they both lost their fathers in the same mining accident and ended up being the providers of their families, since gales mother was pregnant and Katniss mother just completely broke down and became catatonic.

Given that about 90% of the reactors assume it's the gamemakers messing with Katniss (instead of Peeta messing with the gamemakers), I think this is a case of the movie-makers doing a REALLY bad job. I understand that they wanted to show it, and therefore couldn't have done what they did in the book, and have the picture washed off before Katniss (or anyone) could see it, but the way they directed everyone to behave--Katniss being upset and the gamemakers ignoring it (instead of being completely freaked)--was badly misleading for anyone who didn't read the book.

@@babs3241they should have had Peeta walk by Katniss with paint on his hands and maybe say I had to remind them. Something to indicate it was Peeta’s moral outrage that caused him to do it. Then she would have her anger and moment to make them remember Seneca Crane’s fate.

@@kurkindal1234 That would have been a little on the nose, but it's a hard thing to express, so maybe on the nose would have been the way to go with it. And maybe they could have, I don't know, shown that Peeta had been painting the games obsessively for a year as well.

They played up the love triangle for the movies. In the books she looks at Gale more like a best friend.

Regarding romance, please remember that Katniss is a child. It’s easy to forget bc the gladiator plot, warlike themes, heavy political commentary, and the actors are adults irl. But Katniss is a teen bent on survival. She’s not interested in romance, getting married, and having kids so a romantic relationship was thrust upon her unexpectedly. Ofc she latched on to it to survive the games…. But her feelings for Peeta def crept in unexpectedly.

I think Jennifer Lawrence does an outstanding job playing Katniss. However, I think since she wasn't a teenager/doesn't really look like a teenager, that part of it can kind of be lost in the movies. In the first film I think it's fine, but in the second film/book, Katniss is literally a teenager going up against full grown adults, some of whom are twice her age, and I think that get's lost a bit in the film because Jennifer Lawrence looks about 23 in the movie.

@@survivorswapped7637 I think so too. I watch reactions and have to think back when I was 16 how confusing it was trying to decide which boys were just friends & which were meant for more. What characteristics I found attractive vs outward attractiveness. Then add on Katniss’ complications…. I decided to give Katniss a lot more slack.

This movie is only this good because of what we know from the first one. The quarter quell just means there will be something special every 25th year, that it was to be victors only was special, and concocted by Plutarch to set the rebellion going. It was quite ingenious the way he played Snow.

Your reactions are so underrated it hurts, you once again did a great job observing and analyzing this. One thing to point out, the Quarter Quell is a real thing that has already happened twice before. But the way that works is that each time there is a different "special" thing about that year. In the 25th Hunger Games, the districts had to actually choose and vote for their tributes instead of the randomized reaping. In the 50th Hunger Games, the games Haymitch won, there were double the amount of tributes: 4 from each district. So yeah, this year's Quarter Quell was a good excuse for them to bring in the old tributes. If Snow and Plutarch weren't plotting, it probably would have been something else special.

The movie doesn't really get this across, as it seems like the whole Quarter Quell concept is invented solely to get rid of Katniss, but it's actually an established thing in the books. In fact, Haymitch was the winner of the 2nd Quarter Quell / 50th Hunger Games, where the "wrinkle" was that each district had to send FOUR tributes: two men and two women.

Yeah, I wish they'd at least mentioned the previous Quarter Quells at some point to make it clear they were an established thing, but I like that the movie was going for the idea that _the rules_ for this Quell were part of the whole political intrigue plot - IIRC, there was even a deleted scene where Capitol agents go down into the archives as switch out the original rule for the 3rd Quarter Quell with the new one.

The biggest thing missing in the movies from the books is getting to be inside Katniss's head and watching her fall in love with Peeta before she even realizes it. In her mind, she thinks that being with Peeta is the Capitol's plan so if she want to rebel, maybe Gale is the one she should choose, which is around the time in the movie that she kisses Gale. I always thought that made her seem like she was forcing herself to love Gale differently than she actually did and to ignore her very real feelings for Peeta.

It’s funny as well because in the books when Gale is whipped and she kisses him she is like ‘Gale is mine and I am his and I have chosen gale’ then not long after she completely forgets about gale and keeps thinking about peeta, and how she badly wants him to hold her and she’s phoning him to check if he’s okay walking home in a snow storm even though he’s three houses down, and she has to keep reminding herself that she’s chosen gale so she can’t want peeta to hold her and things

The 2nd book and movie was ALWAYS my favorite in the series!!!!! So, I'm SUPER happy you watched it and loved it, too!!!!!!!!! These movies are always amazing and I saw all of them in theatres. I've rewatched these movies repeatedly over the years because I STILL love these movies to pieces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have watched a number of reactions to this series and I'm always amazed that people miss the fact that Peta did the painting of Rue on the floor. So no worries, you are not alone on that point. In other comments people explain more about the motivations better explained in the books. Considering this is an adaptation of books the actors did commendable character development

Haymitch won the second quarter quell, there was 48 people instead of 24. This is not in the movies.

@@that.ll_do_pig I never read the books so I don't remember if I knew that detail going in or not. After the first movie came out I did a deep dive into the series without actually reading it 😅I'm sure its one of those things that is given a lot more focus in the books that the creative team chose not to dedicate a lot of time to for the film; especially since in the first one they call attention that he is artistic since he decorated the cakes. Like a blink and miss it line in the first movie.

I feel like since you watch the series damn near a year ago you probably have already read the books if you intend to I don't know but just so you know the reason for girls whipping what's different he wasn't spearing a peacekeeper to save a little old lady in the hob know he brought a dead turkey to the headpiece keepers home as he was a regular customer of his and he particularly like turkeys he didn't know the guy had been replaced so he got caught red-handed with meat he shouldn't have had access to so they know he'd been illegally hunting so they took him to the square intending to beat him to death multiple people had said he'd taken enough lashes that's all they do for that you got to let him go and he's like that's not enough and they're like he's unconscious you're done he kept on until katniss jumped in front of the whip she did not get punched she was struck with that across the face so she basically had a big scar on her face after that but for story purposes it fit the same role but it happened a bit differently
