I miss Bharatnatyam so much. I studied it as a little girl when I went to school in India. It is so beautiful, and I always felt that it is a form of prayer. It is so awesome to see... I remember doing a different variant of the Alarippu but this one is spectacular. Namaste from Canada!

they may look completely chill but as a bharatanatyam dancer i know that in their heads they are saying "ok... so-and-so is the timing for this part, engage core, tuck pelvis, lift from the ankles so they don't get hurt" etc. it's a struggle but it's beautiful!

Sophia has proven very clearly that what we said earlier about our non Indian performers is not true at all. We said that they could learn the technique of Indian dance but getting its bhav/ feeling and lachak/gracefulness was not possible but she literally nailed and surpassed it all. You are an Indian dancer . Period.

I end up watching this at least once a day! If a part of going to the temple and darshan is to 'see' the Divine and remember, this dance too is that. Each aspect of the Divine and His/Her vahana vividly brings that darshan to the mind! Watching this is like a mental puja. These are standard vocalisation of the rhythm patters. The syllables together form a certian fingering pattern that the drummer is supposed to follow in a full set up.
