This was done in 1971. One take. Live audience. Genius.

For years after this whenever Andre Previn got into a taxi in London, the cab driver would call him Mr Preview.

When this sketch ended at the time, Andre Previn was so 'traumatised' by his appearance with Morecombe & Wise, that we next saw him standing on the open platform of a London red bus, dressed as a bus conductor, ringing the bus bell to move on after the last passenger had alighted. So many famous people allowed these two much beloved comedians in the UK to take 'the mickey' out of them in their shows. It delighted us and showed us another beguiling side of these famous people. Other good sports, among many, were our amazingly talented and much loved singer Shirley Bassey and, the butt of many of their 'running jokes' throughout many of their Shows, the very charming Des O'Connor. There are clips on KZbin if you want to see some more.

When you realise that Mr Privitt, Preview, erm Previn just read the script on the way over and with no time for rehearsal then you see what a comedy classic this is! 🤣🤣🤣 But Mr Morecambe's concerns about no rehearsal, were laid to rest as soon as Mr Preview says: "I'll go get my baton, it's in Chicago." Then you hear Eric say "Pow! He's in, I like him" Eric knows he's onto a winner and has nothing more to be worried about. 🤣 Classic! 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

In the 70's and early 80's the sign of success for any celebrity was to be asked to appear on the Morecambe & Wise Show and in particular their Christmas show. I have so many memories of watching their shows as a kid and still enjoy their humour today. And whenever I hear a siren going past will say to anyone in the vicinity "He won't sell many ice creams going at that speed!"

One of the greatest jokes of all time. Eric apparently rehearsed it for a week to pull off that seemingly casual delivery.

Previn learnt the script literally in the taxi from Heathrow airport. Eric & Ernie were concerned he'd fluff it but when you get to the ' I'll get my baton...in Chicago' line, and Eric smiles, that was the moment he knew Previn was OK. Andre Previn is known in the UK as 'Mr Preview'.

Background: Morecambe and Wise were a leading comedy duo on British television. Andre Previn, the conductor, achieved almost rock star status despite the fact he was a serious classical musician (the conductor is the person who commands the orchestra, determines the interpretation and, on the day, makes sure they all keep to time). Yehudi Menuhin was one of the leading classical violinists of his generation. The opening of the Grieg Piano Concerto is an iconic piece of music, full of passion and drama, so when Eric (who was actually a competent piano player) plays that plinkety-plonk version, that explains Andre Previn's astonished reaction. There's a story that Andre Previn first read this script in a taxi on the way to the studio, sadly this is not entirely true. There are lots of ad libs though - and do look at the orchestra, who are falling over themselves laughing! Andre Previn was one of the most respected musicians of his generation. This sketch gave rise to famous comedy lines: "You're playing all the wrong notes." "I'm playing all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order."

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ernie Wise, he lived on my Police beat, and on Christmas Day he would purposely set off his intruder alarm which necessitated a visit from us. On arrival at his home he would he and his wife would invite us in to wish us a Merry Christmas, and offer us a drink (non alcoholic) 😂😂 and a mince pie!

I hope you didn't book him for wasting Police time! Seriously though, a really nice gesture by little Ern.

@@nicksykes4575 😀 l don’t think it would happen again in this day and age, with all the cutbacks in the Police I don’t think they even attend burglar alarms anymore! Terry Wogan was another tv celebrity on my beat.

@@chrislofotos So you were Police Officer to the stars! The tog meister was another of natures gentlemen. You're right about Police duties/responsibilities being cut back by successive governments, I used to have Traffic Police escorts all over the UK, nowadays it's only Scotland that provides them, in England and Wales it's down to the firm to provide their own.

Eric , Ernie and the producers were so worried about this idea and sketch. Andre Previn was a seriously huge star of music. They were worried about his ability to be natural in a comedy sketch but they didn't have to worry. Andre took to it like a duck to water, he was a natural, as has been mentioned earlier appearing on the Morecambe and Wise show was a huge deal for celebrities. It proved they had made it , the Glenda Jackson appearences are a must watch.

Andre Previn was a great conductor, but in Britain he is best known for this sketch. He was great in it. I would recommend Morcambe & Wise doing their Mastermind sketch.

I still remember watching this when it was first broadcast (although it was a few years before I saw it in colour). I was 10 and had no idea who Mr. Preview was, but I'd seen enough episodes of M&W to realise he must be someone famous. That pair introduced me to a lot of performers in a way that reminded me that these stars were still normal people who could enjoy making a fool of themselves.

Wasn't Mr Previn wonderful? He fully embraced the comedy. It was pure idiocy from our beloved comedians, but so funny.

My mum worked with Eric and Ernie before they were on tv. Mum was a professional dancer. She did a summer season with them. They were on the verge of packing in their comedy duo bur decided they wouid give going on tv a chance. They never looked back after that and became our national treasures. Christmas day always had a Morecambe and Wise Christmas special. Famous people queued up to be on one of their shows. There are some hilarious sketches of them with a Famous presenter and singer called Des O'connor. The 2 of them used to take the micky out of Des implying his records were rubbish. Look up some of the sketches 😂. Mum said they were lovely. She also worked with another famous comedian/entertainer Tommy Cooper who passed away live on stage in the middle of a televised show. I remember watching it when it happened. He collapsed on stage and at first everyone thought it was part of his act.

Andre Previn had already had a considerable successful career as a writer of soundtracks for Hollywood movies (his family had escaped to the US from Nazi Germany just before WW2 started, when he was 8), but he was best known as a conductor of classical music orchestras, and at the time he hosted a weekly classical music programme on BBC Radio. This was from Morecambe and Wise’s 1971 Christmas show - “for £4 more we could have got Edward Heath!”, he was Prime Minister at the time, and known to play the piano. The Argyle Theatre, Birkenhead, was bombed during the Second World War and never rebuilt. Andre Previn said that decades later London taxi drivers would still call him “Mr Preview”!

Mr Preview was a World class musician and conductor. You need to go find the genuine piano concerto and hear the difference. It's a fantastic piece of music.

André Previn had never done comedy before and his schedule mean there wasn't time for rehearsal. Eric Morecambe, who rehearsed obsessively to pull off the perfect timing that looks 'ad-libbed', was very worried. When Previn ad-libbed that line about leaving his baton in Chicago and was genuinely funny, Eric's joy that everything would be all right comes out in his reaction.

Celebrities in 1970's UK were nobody unless they'd been on Morecambe and Wise. They were comic geniuses. To this day, the only other comedy duos who can compete with Morecambe and Wise on equal ground are The Two Ronnies and Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.
