I'm a sinhalese from sri lanka. Proud to say i can speak both sinhala & tamil. But the reality is majority of sinhalese can't speak tamil. coz they don't need it for daily life, they don't learn it.. It is a sad situation. Second reality is sinhala is similar to all north indian languages(hindi,bengali,gujarathi,marathi,panjabi etc) than any dravidian language like tamil,malayalam,thelugu or kannada. DNA studies says we sinhalese are from west bengol. Historical records says we came from Kalinga(odisha)-vanga(bengol) area. Origin of sinhala language is Elu prakrit which is similar to maharashtri prakrit. eg- Va (tamil) - ava(sin) - Avo (hindi) 1,2,3,4,5,6- eka,deka,thuna.hathara,paha,haya (sin) soru(tamil) - bath(sin) - bath(hindi) -ek,dek,theen,char,panch (hindi) Panna(tamil) - karana(sin)- karna(hindi) - onru,rendu,munru,nangu,indu(tamil) aama (tamil) - ha(sin) - ha (hindi) illei(tamil) - naha(sin) - nahi(hindi) Nan (tamil) - ma/mama - mein (hindi)Etc Sinhala is indo aryan. no one can argue about that. You just listen to sri lankan national anthem in sinhala & tamil version . you will understand the differance. tom 123

To all the People who says that i dont understand Tamil caz i m Sinhala and to all the people who says that i m Tamil i dont understand Sinhala i blame the the J R people who mad it to this situation. I m talking even before the war. Once they made Sinhala as the national language (Which Politicians used this situation to capture the highest number of seats in the parliament) and this eventually had an impact for many minorities (Who didnt know the language properly) like starting from Jobs to form filling(like Government form filling / day to day utility payments and all) and plus some added shit which lead to a 30 years of war and still some are affected by the war. There is a next door person who sells betel leaves for living who can speak all three language fluently (he is a Sinhalese ) fact that he learned up to Grade 11 while British were in Sri Lanka. Like knowing the language and not knowing the language is up to a person but if you were able to speak all three language its always a plus point in many ways including the business and but begin in Sri lanka mastering or learning other language i have no idea what could a person gain from it. When i was small i had gone through all the racial shit and stuff but after some time i learned the language and i have evolved with the current situation now i have good Sinhala friends too who also like to learn Tamil. Conclusion even some of the the oldest scripts written in the rock in Sri lanka is in Sinhala and Tamil(Translated ) means even in history people were together. For Politic reason and for 3rd graded works the country has gone through hell of a shit and still its going through in my point view. For nothing but Politics lol sad though. you know when everyone sing the national anthem in Sinhala i m humming inside in Tamil. Shame to say some line now i dont even know. This is just my feelings toward the country and there are people who dont even give a shit about it well thats life i have to move on. You know the biggest joke all the people who talks about language and culture and stuff (Politicians) there kids are well settled and studying in English medium but fun fact future generation will be in good hands if people educate them in a good way.
