Its not lakes overflowing, its because of human habitats are built inside lakes. The area of the lakes and buffer zones of the lakes and canals are all encroached without scientific or natural water management techniques. Rampant human habitation without considering proper flooding scenario in these areas, occupying and reducing the size of lakes, laying roads in canals are the reasons for this flood. Chennai is established way beyond its threshold limit for naturally sustaining it.

Great news coverage by Lady Journalists of India Today grp braving the rain and producing live news...Velachery has been a problem area for long and gets affected invariably due to heavy rain as its close by water bodies...Lot of real estate dev has happened on water bodies by converting them into residential for businessman and politicians greed and ppl who can't afford to buy in good areas unfortunately buy here and have to undergo this hassle every yr during NE monsoon season in Chennai. The most affected ppl are those on GF due to waterlogging, sewage blockage, etc and the top floor ppl manage to escape...

Catchment areas must be kept in mind and a huge storm water drain has to be built that can be permeable to deep underground aquifers. In march to May, when water scarcity occurs water that scares the city will come to rescue. Such urban planning must be done.

It's been 3 days now. I live in 35th Street Balaji Nagar - Puzuthivakkam. The waterlog is still there and no actions were taken. Don't know whom to blame. No water to drink. Funny part was, there are 1000+ people struggling. For eye wash they came in chopper and gave some packages for 10-20 people and everyone were shouting for help. Atleast during this calamities pls serve the public. 5-10 boats in one area what's the point.

Now, the flood of 2023 has come.. 😢 Even if the government does some renovations in 8 years(after 2015), it is not enough.. We can recover from these disasters only if we do things like draining the lakes, doing the rainwater drainage works in all the low-lying areas and avoiding people encroachment in the low-lying areas from now on.

Have you seen or heard the flood of 2015 during late Jayalalitha's time? I still remember the nightmares that we experienced in those days. How many people lost their lives, homes, important documents during her time, when rain was just half of this cyclone rain and wind speed? How many houses were flooded and people ran for their life especially during midnight and still could not save themselves? Peole were just vanished off in the flood and floating bodies were seen here and there. How many days the havoc continued in Chennai and how many days the electricity was cut off and how many days the phones were not working? Infact Stalin has done a great job. He has managed the worst affected flood situation in a very very efficient way. Kudos to him and his team.
