You seem to be reviewing cattle that are close to my heart. We farm with Nguni, Tuli, pinzgauer and from about six years ago we introduced bonsmara bulls to some of our cows. Tuli are a better option to Nguni as they produced calves that are not discriminated by feed lots and are very similar on veld. Tuli cattle are 90% poled. Their first cross with Nguni give about 60% solid colour and high percentage poled. They wean just short of 200kgs, an improvement to the 160kg weaning weight of pure Nguni. Tuli cattle wean about 180 to 230kgs. Crossing them with bonsmara results in high weaning weights of 280kgs and higher. We wean at 7 to 8 months but in good years we wean our replacement heifers at 10 months at that point the mother weans the calves herself but teaches her alot on vegetation to eat in our karoo veld. At that point the heifer calves weigh in excess of 305 kgs We make use of Tuli stud bulls from tip tree Tuli and avondale Tuli and our bonsmara bulls are also stud bulls from alphaeton bonsmara. When we still farmed with pinzgauer bulls we got our bulls from Bertie van zyl, we now use those pinzgauer cows in cross breeding to achieve that hybrid vigour.

Thanks for the informative reply! Yes, I have a soft spot for the indigenous breeds and I believe the they have been highly underrated! In fact I truly believe that , to farm sustainably in the future - you have to incorporate these breeds into your herd. The effects of crossing with the Bonsmara makes sense. Besides the huge impact of heterosis, you are increasing the actual size of the progeny. The breeder where I bought my Tulis (Langlyf Tuli Stud) actually did a trial where he crossed Tulis with Dexters. One of his Dexter cows weaned a calf 93% of her body mass! That's unheard of! While that specific cross might not have any value for the feedlots - it's a good example of what happens when you cross two breeds that compliment each other. Thanks for watching my video!

@@shanecotty3275 a friend d of mine has dexters and as of 2020 his small herd is running on our farm as he ran into grazing issues after the severe drought of 2019. He farms in port Elizabeth. Interesting cattle that aren't fussy. You can also keep alot of dexters on the veld as opposed to large frame cattle. Much suited for small farms

93%? That's madness. I'm Impressed. I would like to see a Bonsmara x brahman. My father had those crosses when I was still a kid.

@ncedisafeni351 how big is your farm bru?
@ncedisafeni351
@ncedisafeni351 3 ай бұрын
@@njabsmangena it's in a low rain fall area. The karoo. Averaging 250mm annually instead of the 360mm listed for this area... As much as it is a big farm, it's carring capacity is compromise by location and being in a arid area, hence the choice of breeds we opted for. Hardy animals that are fertile and functional with acceptable weaning weights.

I would love to see more use of Tuli in red commercial herds such as bons and beefm i think they could advance progress in terms of adaptation

Hi Mark, I agree! Having said that - just by selecting for the correct "type" within a breed one can already make a lot of headway!

No problems mate 👍. I did a quick one earlier - but give my time to find a Bonsmara herd that I can film and I'll do a more comprehensive one. Thanks for watching! 🍻
