Donkeys are the best! I'm a long-time equestrian, so of course I love my horses, but donkeys are hands down the most intelligent equines that I know. They have amazing memory and emotional capacity, more so than most horses. They never forget a face - if you mistreat a donkey, he will remember to hate you even 20 years down the line. But they are fiercely loyal and protective of the people they love, and if you earn a donkey's trust he will go to the ends of the earth for you!

Very well said, and I too am from a family of equestrians... They do the funniest things, but the best part is they have huge hearts. I feel fortunate to have "rescued" (adopted) a Donk and a Mini during a severe drough..

I agree re donkeys, the first equine I ever rode was a donkey on Weston Supermare beach, I was six, and I was smitten. Still have his photo - "David". I would love to have a couple of donkeys. However, I find horses do have a memory for faces/people, quite long, and I also think they remember being mistreated. There is a story about a famous racing stud, Eclipse? who was in his barn when a groom who had abused him in the past came in, and Eclipse tried to climb out of his stall to get at him and presumably do him some damage. I have a gelding too who, in his new barn freaked out when he heard the voice of a past abusive trainer. I think donkeys by far have more emotional capacity, and they are so smart. It's tragic how they're mistreated when people acquire them without knowing what their needs are, including that they need more warmth and shelter than horses do. And then the crisis in Africa with donkeys being slaughtered for their skins to make some kind of ointment for the Chinese - it's so depressing.

My uncle uses them as guard animals on his farm. He's got a few mixed in with the small herd of cattle he has and they "protect" the babies from the coyotes and occasional bobcat. The donkeys won't run from the either and will stand their ground and fight... basicaly making any attempt at getting a meal not worth it to whatever they're fighting off. Their kicking instinct makes them a perfect adversary to coyotes.

I enjoyed the animals I enjoyed the interesting facts of donkeys that I knew nothing about and I truly enjoyed listening to you my mother was born and raised in Watford,England as well as my grandparents and they moved to the states . My mother passed away a few weeks ago ……she was my closest friend and I was so comforted listening to you talk using words that I’ve heard my whole life. I have even considered moving to England. she took us there for a month on holiday and I fell in love with it , the people, the beauty. Thank you so much for such a wonderful Friday evening.

Thank you for a lovely and informative video. Can I add for those thinking of getting donkey: be very careful about introducing your dogs (if you have any) to your donkey. They will attack attack unknown dogs which is the very reason they are run with cattle. They are much smarter than horses and have a great sense of humour. Our donkey used to love playing tricks on our horses and on us! They are also quite sensitive creatures so always treat them kindly and train them with positive reinforcement methods. Make sure your blacksmith knows how to file a donkeys hooves and doesn't file them as he would do horses' hooves. Thanks again, your donkeys have a lovely life

Hi. I am new to Donkeys, I got two. They seem to be very wild, probably mistreated prior to my home. But the biggest problem is that they tried to kill my dog today or maybe at least injure her terribly. I was there to save her. They also tried to kill a goat, it was a male goat. I am not sure what to do, is there a way to train them? Or do I need them to go to a new home that doesn't have smaller animals. I'm sick to my stomach about what to do. Anything would help, ideas

I love that you said they are easy to train. I'm from Hungary where we have a saying 'stubborn as a donkey'. I've always thought though that they're only stubborn if you don't treat them right, give them some love and positive reinforcement and they'll be happy to work for you ❤
@chusmontes2310 Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the saying, but there's a reason for it. Donkeys are intelligent, far more intelligent than horses are. So, they might not obey your commands if they think it's not a good idea and they don't fully trust you and your judgement.

Here's my Donkey story. My one and only (aside from seeing them occasionally at a fair/carnival). This particular day, back in 2010, I would be shadowing a veterinarian, who made farm calls, for school. I'm a city dweller so visiting any farm was quite an exciting prospect for me, as I had really no experience handling or interacting with farm animals, of any kind. Anyhow, I arrived at this veterinarians practice but he wasn't ready to go just yet, so I had about 30 mins to kill. As I waited outside, I saw that out in their pasture stood 2 beautiful brown adult donkeys. They were inside of a fenced in area. Of course, I excitedly walked over to greet them. The donkeys were just milling about, snacking on grass. I tried to get their attention, waving and gently calling for them to come over to me but much to my dismay, they didn't have the same enthusiasm in meeting me as I did them, lol. It would take some convincing to get them to come closer. I thought an offering of some sort might do the trick. So, I grabbed up a gob of grass trying to bait them. They finally did walk over to me but both of them quickly assessed that what I held in my hand, was nothing to write home about, so they just went back to their grazing, essentially ignoring me. Kneeling down, I stuck my hand through the bottom of the fence, showing them once again, the same, nothing special grass, that they were already eating, trying my darnedest to pet at least one of them but no dice. With a defeated sigh, I go to pull my hand back through the fence and as I did that, I felt the biggest jolt of buzzing pain, that seamed to run right through me. I had never felt something like that before in my entire life. I jumped up and screamed like an idiot for a brief moment. At first, I didn't know what the hell happened. Looking closer though, It became evident that I had failed to notice several live wires, all which ran around the inside of that fence. I felt like such a dope. Thankfully, no one saw me make a fool of myself that day, well, except those stubborn donkeys lol It sure was a learning experience! Thanks for reading :)

I was walking to a friend's barn at night in the winter with snow on the ground. I hadn't been out to their place for a few months, and didn't realize they'd moved fences. So I walked straight into an electric fence. I discovered that rubber boots on wet snow don't have much of an insulating effect. Very unpleasant experience.

Grew up never giving much thought to donkeys, probably due to all the negative stereotypes we learn about them starting at an early age (that they’re dumb, stubborn, slow, etc). It wasn’t until I got a bit older that I absolutely fell in love with them. They’re not stubborn or dumb, they merely need some time to process situations, the same way humans do. They also, as seen here ^ need proper maintenance so they're not left with discomfort. Understandably, a donkey with aching hooves isn't going to be as receptive to instructions. Unfortunately, they’ve been used for harsh labor throughout history, and so they’ve earned this reputation for being bad creatures. If you’re thinking about adopting a donkey, I highly encourage it! Such thoughtful, special beings. Anyone's life would be richer with a donkey in it ❤
@LRyan-li9wr Жыл бұрын
I volunteer at a donkey sanctuary, and have learned that donkeys are actually very intelligent, moreso than a horse. A rider on a horse could ride off a cliff with the horse, but a donkey will simply refuse to jump. They have very high self-preservation traits. Donkeys also need another donkey, they bond with other donkeys and can become greatly distressed if they can't find their buddy. They get lonely just by themselves. So if you're going to adopt, then adopt 2 of them! Also, don't forget that they like to kick, so it's best to avoid their rear end. Though they can kick sideways too. They're absolutely beautiful animals!
