Indigenous Knowledge to Close Gaps in Indigenous Health | Marcia Anderson-DeCoteau | TEDxUManitoba

Health programs that are culture-based and use both western and Indigenous knowledge have the potential to be more responsive to Indigenous peoples and their rights than the status quo and could be the key to closing the gaps in Indigenous health.
Manito Ikwe Kagiikwe is a program that serves substance involved women who are pregnant or early parenting. They work according to the Seven Sacred Teachings, treating women who are often the most stigmatized in the health care system with love and respect.
Dr. Anderson DeCoteau is a Cree-Saulteaux physician working in predominantly administrative/ policy/ planning
type roles. She strives to ground mainstream systems approaches to Indigenous health in Indigenous rights, and Indigenous understandings and teachings around health, being healthy, and healingwhich sometimes requires
challenging definitions of science and evidence.of

Mitakuye Oyasin - We Are All Related. Such a simple and powerful statement that is often forgotten in such a divided and politicized society. Marcia directly acknowledges this shortfall in our healthcare system when she states, “[The Western medical system] doesn’t help indigenous peoples when the healthcare system doesn’t meet their needs either because they can’t get into the system, or when they do, they are treated as less than fully human by a system built on a concept of health and healing that was privileged over their own.” As physicians, I feel that it is worthy to take a step back and reflect upon the Hippocratic Oath, which every physician takes upon graduating medical school, that guides our practice. The Oath states, “I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.” It should go without saying that it is morally and ethically wrong for healthcare professionals to discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity. General moral duties obligate health professionals to provide equal care and consideration to each patient, despite their racial, cultural, or ethnic background. At the core of who we are as healthcare providers, we must remain conscious that we are all human, no matter ethnic or racial background of our patients, and provide care to them with the respect and dignity that they rightfully deserve.

I totally agree kindness is missing in our health care and a lot of it stems from medical school interviews where kindness is not assessed due to the lack of quantitative objective measure of evaluation

My name is: fit the description.thats my indian name ,but strong and watching.the first time i realized that i was different is when a vice principal slammed my head in a locker ,oh yeah i grew up in east kildonan in the 1980s ,i am a registered member of gardin hill .i have been beat by police and busted up 12 times since 1993 not tickled with feathers but broken down bones , heart and spirit . ive been left for dead three times in the winnipeg remand centre ,the last time really left mark , but i feel for the ones that think that they understand and tell there story about all of us .because you women forget that us men are getting put in jail for charges that dont deserve to be taken away , i know cause i fit the description of the subject that is the one they want to drag down! from: fit the description .

Teachings: Determination,Diet and motivation. Setting personal goals and start moving. Why do people make it about racism??.. death by a urinary tract infection sounds like uncontrolled diabetes and late medical help. If everyone took control of their personal health care..our A1Cs would improve and decrease cost of healthcare.

The data is clear that Indigenous people get a measurably poorer service from the health care system than other patients. They are offered less access to medicines and receive significantly poorer advice and support. The evidence is actually quite clear.

I don't know, she is talking about racism being the cause of poor health, diabetes, etc. Meanwhile she is slightly overweight, at a level that is certainly high enough to cause diabetes. I think education and self control is an issue there. They have similar issues in Fiji where the native locals are a majority. Poor education on diet, etc has resulted in very high rates of obesity. They eat themselves to death, and ignorance is the only cause. Stop trying to blame something like that on everyone else. Take care of yourselves and take responsibility.

I just want to point out that being over weight doesn't always mean there's an issue with self control. I am over weight and I barely eat. I have family member's who have thyroid diseases which cause them to retain weight. We should not be so judgmental towards people we know nothing about. I agree that we need to educate people about making good health choices. I also want to point out that most people eat what is available to them because it's their only choice. We can't scold someone for filling up on rice if rice is the only option they have. ijs

There exist socio-economic determinants of health beyond a person's control. The ones named by Dr. Anderson-DeCoteau in this video at 2:25 are "the entrenchment of poverty", "chronic underfunding of education and child welfare", and "inadequate, overcrowded housing", all of which disproportionately affect racialized communities. It's been a year since you posted your original comment. I hope in that year you have learned to recognize the luxury that is "taking care of yourself". You have a choice to say No to food. You have a choice to maintain a certain lifestyle. You have a choice where many people have none.

I hope you will watch this video again, systemic racism, oppression, colonization, residential schools are key words. Humility, kindness, love goes a long way in taking care of each other. And please ask her how she feels and listen to her before narrating her life, health and wellbeing from your point of view. Anyways, we are all learning together.
