Interview with Mrs. Gandhi forms nucleus of report on India, where starvation may this year kill five million people if the present drought continues. "Tremendous unity and determined effort" are required to cope with the food shortage problem, now being alleviated by shipments of wheat from the USA. Views of Mrs. Gandhi and a Delhi industrialist are optimistic, the former believing it possible to "create a new outlook among the people" and describing the success of the family planning campaign, the latter stating that the standards of living is constantly rising and that India could become an industrial nation. Reporter focuses on the difficulty of breaking the vicious circle of poverty, famine and overpopulation, and the survival of the caste system. [Report includes footage of mongoose attacking and killing a snake]

One thing stands out - compared to recent Indian politicians, she never tried to avoid responsibility ... neither did she say all those accusation was false.

Oh pls.. She only heard Russian soviet at that point of time. If she was really responsible why did she murder Shastri? She and I must say whole Nehru Gandhi Family are/ we're killer.

@@tapanjoshi8284 Shastri died of heart attack in Russia. By your standards I would say Pakistanis and Russians would have killed him. Indira Gandhi did not become the direct PM after Shastri was dead. It was Gulzari Lal Nanda as acting PM followed by Indira Gandhi..

it is very easy to pressurize your slave and then provide food, the slave will forget everything and will praise you if he get food. if neheru was not there and netaji was the PM then india would run at the same pace as japan.the policy was poor from the begining from the side of khangress

People who criticise congress rule from 1947 to 1995 easily forget that british left India in taters. Policy decision taken during those time cant be viewed myopically as India lot problems and Govt did its best I feel. It could have been lot better but one easily forgets cost of three wars and risk of civil war or worse Army take over. Let us not criticise past. Those look at past forget to see future and live in past.

Look at china they developed in 20years under the leadership of chairman mao and Japan they built their nation quickly.Look at Korea,Singapore these become first world countries in just 20 years. But look at India.Due to the mediocre rule of Congress India was still a third world country till 1999.They had got 50years of time they couldn't do what china,Korea, Singapore did in just 20years.

Those were the days of the rotten American wheat under the PL480 programme ; We in India were having these stuff , as the US were punishing India for fighting Pakistan and winning - Oh the horrendous post Kennedy years ; then came in a certain Richard Nixon !! yet it was only Indira Gandhi who stood out for India .

people born after 80's would never understand this food issue. its a time where india was on his own, and plans were in making process and industries where in starting process. sad part is those progress to future were in planned by educated and executed by politicians. that big difference between educated and uneducated was today. only few politicians did good job, remaining took their home. where else rest of world did a corporate style. it is gonna to take another decade to execute those plans which was planned during this time of interview

India suffered from famines during colonial times. Famines were a thing of the past in independent India. Food rationing and distribution, importing food from US and USSR helped in saving millions from hunger and starvation. The green revolution and white revolution, have put India in the list of countries that can export food. What India suffers from is a block on its export of agricultural goods to Europe. The commentator is trying to put India as a miserable place.

Its funny how after all of the poverty and misery that they are trying to project, we hear peals of laughter in the background, we see a gentle calm over the faces of people as they go about their days. Its about time the west realizes that their entire idea of happiness is flawed. We have our own set of flaws, agreed. but our philosophy is more holistic and balanced. Its great that they have put this up online. so that when in the next 100 years, when we become a global superpower, we have this to tell them that they were wrong. Jai Jawan. Jai Kisan.

@rajeshsharma121 It's better you don't speal on a subject in which you lack sufficient knowledge. During the emergency period 1975-77 the Govt of India served it's best. GDP rose sharply, economy boomed. speedy service in govt offices, a record still untouched. Sir, please have some respect for deceased soul!
