Good stuff. Your straightforward explanation is welcome after the confusion from other sources. Re lhe sneaking in, I think this is found in Spanish as well, referred to as "leismo". Very helpful.

I find the dichotomy between spoken and written language in Brazil confusing. I want to learn the correct usage. Maybe I should start with European Portuguese?

Yep, Brazilian Portuguese can be a bit confusing, but it's quite consistent. If by _correct usage_ you mean _according to the grammar rules_ , any dialect will do. Written Brazilian Portuguese is as correct as any dialect you may find (from Africa, from Europe, and so on). But there's bound to be a difference between the spoken language and the written language in any dialect. The fact that Portugal is so small -- geographically speaking --, that it has a population of 10 million people only (while São Paulo - city - has 12 million people), and that its people have access to education (more so than in Brazil), all this means written and spoken Eu-PT won't have as big a gap as in Br-PT. If you learn European Portuguese, you'll learn how to form sentences like someone from Portugal. This is different - but perfectly understandable and welcome - in Brazil. But if you start learning Br-PT then go to Portugal, you'll find it's not considered as understandable or well accepted in Portugal. All in all, having fun and keeping in touch with the culture(s) and the language is important, whichever version of Portuguese you choose 😀

Professor, o pronome tu de segunda pessoa foi eliminado?

Na verdade, não. Ele existe e está bem saudável. É só que no Brasil ele não é mais usado "corretamente". Quer dizer, nós usamos informalmente o "tu", mas com a conjugação de você. Ou seja, dizemos "tu vai" em vez de "tu vais". Então ficou um acordo entre os professores de português brasileiro para estrangeiros: o "tu" fica esquecido, mas é relembrado quando ensinamos português escrito :-)
Wondering about the gerund? Portuguese uses it, but differently
