Thank you so much for such an informative video. Could you please help me understand if this question can still be considered a yes-no question: "Is the view pretty?" Possible answers: "Yes" "No" "Slight" What if someone answers "50% pretty"? What do we call these in English?
@lingportal
@lingportal Жыл бұрын
Dear Clyde Jude Burdeos, Thank you for your comment. Questions that need either a yes or a no answer are called yes-no questions. For example: Do you like vanilla ice cream? (answer: yes or no) Have you ever seen a ghost? (answer: yes or no) Responding to yes/no questions: Other ways of saying yes and no include yeah, yep, mm, okay, and nah, nope. These are informal, for example: A: Have you seen Greg? B: Nope. (meaning no) We can also give more than just a yes or no answer. We sometimes add more information: A: Can I grow potatoes in a pot? B: Yeah. They grow really well in pots. Sometimes we don’t use yes or no as a reply but the answer that we give means yes or no, for example: A: Do you have the Thrills latest album? B: ’m afraid we’ve just sold the last one! (meaning no) Your example: A: "Is the view pretty?" B: "Slight" (meaning yes, but 'small in degree') Stay with us and enjoy your English learning

If the original sentence was for example “isn’t Adam a lawyer?” Would the indirect question be something like “Can you tell me whether Adam is a lawyer or not?” I feel like it won’t change much of the meaning but it’s so confusing to me. I’ve asked multiple teachers over the years but none of them could get a sentence for sure.

Thank you, it’s a pleasure to meet such an inquisitive student. These are two different types of questions. Negative questions are used to ask for confirmation of something you believe to be true: Isn’t Adam a lawyer? = I believe that Adam is a lawyer. An indirect question is another type of question - this is a more polite way to ask for information or make requests. Indirect questions are not used to ask for confirmation. That is why you feel that the meaning of an indirect question is slightly different from a negative question. From my point of view, it is better to avoid such kinds of negative questions because they can cause misunderstanding. Here are two options: - Isn’t Adam a lawyer? (negative question) - Is Adam a lawyer? (positive question) These two questions practically do not differ in meaning. You can answer (for example) ‘No, he isn’t’ for both options. Stay with us and enjoy your English learning.
