Thanjavur is my district, I visited the temple more than thousand times... Originally the temple name was Peruvudaiyar temple/koil, and currently used to say it as 'Periya Koil' meaning Big Temple. Brihadeeswara is Sanskrit word, which has been coined by Brahmins (elite and educated community), which most of locals does not aware of as this never been called by this name by locals. Pichavaram, Poompukar, Gangai Konda Chola Puram, Manora, and Tharangambadi are our nearest and favourite picnic spots... Ofcourse there are many more nearby (1hr travel) picnic spots favourite for my family which is to enjoy nature, nothing to do with History and wonders...

I always love the city of Thanjavur enriched with arts and culture which no other cities in India have. But the city is/was all along neglected by the state and the central governments by giving no attention towards the city to establish big institutions /industries inorder to recognise its richest culture and anciency. But for Dr. M G R and Selvi. Jayalalitha the least development which we see today in the city could not have taken place. If the city is in Europe or in the U S, it would have certainly be developed into a world class one. What can we do ? The elected representatives(MPs/MLAs), politicians, government officers and even the citizens of the city/district do not bother about its development. Let us wait and see what will happen.
