Indo Def 2016: Inside Lockheed Martin F-16V Falcon simulator

I had a brief opportunity to use the simulator today at the 83rd Internation Exhibition, in Thessaloniki, Greece. I managed to land acceptably for someone who has never used a sophisticated simulator. You could tell the advanced flight model. The aircraft was more difficult to control than the usual flight simulators. Roll inertia is significantly more than you'd expect and requires counter-input to halt immediately. Also, HOTAS is amazing. There's even a hat on the throttle handle that lets you control a reticle on the radar screen to pick targets for missile launch. Thanks to Kenn and his colleague (don't remember the name) for their patience and professionalism in that incredibly noisy and crowded environment.

Does this simulate a radar warning receiver? Did you have the chance to see it function?

@@gb7418 Sorry, nothing like that happened on my brief stint. There were so many people queuing for the simulator, the LM guys just did a simple thing with each "pilot" and then onto the next person. I was lucky enough to do both an aerial engagement and a landing.

Try downloading Falcon BMS, it is a great F-16 simulator.

Bubi is correct. go to benchmarksims. The download is free for BMS 4.33.3. The only catch is that you need the original Falcon 4.0 exe. file or disk. You can Google Falcon 4.0 and find it. BMS 4.33.3 is not for the beginners. It is like flying the real thing, without the fear of death and g forces of course. There is a lot of reading and practicing involved. Just a fair warning. It is as real as a civilian can get.

Now let's see you reset the auto-GCAS system to minimums. In this demo it's set to very gentle limits. Take it to max and it's ABUSIVE when it decides it's time to fly up. You'll be SURE you're about to splatter and then it engages. At max G.

F-18 is a little harder to start since it has 2 engines to fire up. The stick on the F-18 has a lot more movement. The stick on the F-16 only moves about 1/4 inch or less in all directions. It is force sensitive.

The side MFDs need a major upgrade. They look like they are still black and white CRTs.

they're not they are full color MFDs, what you are seeing is the sniper pod in Infrared setting White Hot/ Black Hot

wwbdwwbd, The F16 block 52 and 72 have full color MFD displays. This simulator is not 100% accurate though. I am sure that the block 72 still uses the same DED as the block 52. The one used here does not look like it should. My simulator actually looks better than this one. I wish I had the display set up though. The title is misleading. He demonstrated the capabilities of every modern F-16. The only new thing is the Auto GCAS system. I was hoping that they would show something that the block 52 could not do.

sagrzmnky: Every Block 50/52 F-16 doesn't have AESA slewed IRST. There are some substantial upgrades with Block 70/72 with the V model, mainly the SABR and integrated E/O systems with the AESA, as well as other things. CFTs extended the mission radius to over 1000nm.

When the pilot is equipped with the Helmet Mounted Sight, does it mean that the HUD can be obsoleted as all the tactical & navigation data are projected on the helmet glass?

No. The way it works in the f-16 is that there is a sensor and if you are looking straight ahead at the HUD, you dont get the Helmet symbology. If you turn your head left/right, up/down, the helmet comes alive.

lupahole Got it & tks! But what fascinating is that F35 can have the HUD obsoleted, does it mean that the HMDS of the F35 pilots is more advanced than that of the F16's? I have seen a video showing that the size of the HMDS of the F35 pilot is tailored for every individual.

Correct, the f-35 does not have a HUD. Its all done with the HMD and its way more advanced than the JHMCS of the f-16 and f-15. Yes, its suited to each pilots measurements.

Ah, not sure about that one. Dont know if there is a "traditional one". All of them are holographic. Even the old ww2 gun sights on planes like the spitfire.

The Air Force is getting out of the F-16. It’s going the way of the F-35. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another Air superiority fighter is already in the works. Image this: a low RCS aircraft with TWO F-35 engines and an payload damn near the size of an F-15E. We are talking about super cruise at 500ft with less than mil power. It would be a game changer!

G suits don't guarantee you won't black out at high G. They just help you cope with it. GLOC (g loss of consciousness) is a real thing, even with the suits.
