🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

So far Sonny has explored: Balinese people, some Papuan people (they have thousands of different tribes that speaks languages that may not be intelligible to each other), and then this time, Batak (Karo - there are many tribes of Batak) people, Badui people, Acehnese people, Medan people, Bugis people, Torajan people. He is not yet exposed to our "maintstream" Indonesian like Padang, Palembang Malays, East Javan, Sundanes, Dayak people, Madurese, Sumbawans, Kupang, Manadoese, Moluccans, welp, the list goes on and on. I have to apologise if you feel excluded. It is a diverse country that you don't just brag about, but get overwhelmed, confused, and then shocked to find that they suddenly speak Indonesians too. Yeah, these are just "mainstream" culture in a way that we have their foods are easily available everyday, in most of Indonesia's major cities for mobile phone app delivery order. Vladimir Putin once laughed at his agriculture minister for suggesting to export pork to Indonesia - because we by statistic are Muslim-majority nation, But if you look at the details, we have more pork eaters than the entire Scandinavian countries combined. You just don't presume about Indonesia. I lived here for more than 30 years already, stepped on all the 5 major islands, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, Papua, but I still know nothing. It is much much much culturally and culinarily richer than many people assumed.

How do you always know what to ask? It's amazing to me your instinctual questioning. The manaynay must have been so awkward as an outsider. Fascinating ritual. There is not a single person who has ever gone into tribe life as animated as you are. I have a hard time getting my kids to watch videos with me, but they'll watch yours because your line of questioning is very simplistic and easy to follow. Your narrations are perfect for a wide variety of watchers. I mean this documentary showcases your considerable respect and the unique perspective you are able to give your viewers and those you interact with. Would I have watched a documentary on a variety of tribes? Possibly. Maybe for a bit. Because it's always fascinating to see how others live. But would kids? No. But they'll watch you. There's something to be said there.

Suka banget sama jawaban mbak andre dalam menjelaskan apapun tentang makanan maupun aturan islam. Simple tapi to the point banget. Terkhusus di "aturan islam ada standarnya tapi setiap orang berbeda bedan dalam menerapkannya" Suka banget line itu. Sayang sih banyak emg sekarang ud yg ga ikutin standar. Semoga kita bisa jadi lebih baik

I habe many imported fowl from Indonesia and they totally taste different, especially the Ayam cemani chicken with black meat. Closer to a mild pheasant flavor. Peafowl tongue is very coveted too. I have the Ayam ketawa as well, a nice flock of laughing chickens lol

wow, malaysian here. Initially i thought the karo people were dayaks (i'm mixed dayak myself -- from east malaysia, Sarawak) but that's at kalimantan area. Very interesting to see how our neighbour's traditions and beliefs shape their lives and sometimes, have some form of commonality with each other too. I salute sonny for trying some of the food on here ,but I think maybe i'm too urbanized and domesticated to even try something even more milder in my own state haha

Batak are not dayak, batak have many sub-group to like karo, toba, angkola, simalungun , mandaliling, pakpak, etc. gayo, alas, nias, mentawai are closed cousin to batak, just like Melayu sub-group like Melayu proper, Minangkabau, Banjar, Kutai and kerinci. dayak like iban, melanau, kelabit, kenyah, ngaju, meratus etc. all these are austronesian people.

Wow!!! Thank you Sonny and your team for the look into that Indonesian peoples' death rituals. It's so different and so unique. It's a unique way of extending love even after death. This is the first time I've seen any people anywhere doing this. The pigs and buffalos and all the foods are great to watch. But the death rituals and the implied love for family members who have passed are so unique and interesting to see. Thank you all so much at Best Ever Food Review Show for this type of lesson about this people. I enjoyed watching this show and learning from it.

Thanks for sharing this with us. This has been so enlightening for me, it's taught me to appreciate how different cultures really are. And different is a good thing. I don't know if I would be able to eat some of the foods you ate especially liver ,lungs etc. But I have a whole new appreciation for the food of different people and cultures. I truly have learned a lot from this. thank you
