I particularly loved visiting the volcano. What do you think is the top spot to visit in Bali?

This might sound odd, but bali isnt DA food destination for indonesians. Sure here and there you will find good stuff. . But in general, not really. Popular bali dishes are babi guling, betutu. Here are popular cities in no particular order for food adventure. 1. Jakarta, melting pot of all cuisines. Not just national but international well represented. 2. Medan, great chinese, indian influenced dishes. 3. Padang/bukittinggi, the famous nasi padang and many other west sumatran dishes. Lacks of other cuisines. 4. Bandung, great sundanese cuisine and very creative streetfood scene. 5. Yogyakarta, especially if you are into the sweet dishes, though there are plenty of spicy as well. 6. Surabaya, home of a couple of indonesians favorite dishes, such as rawon. Soup broth in east part of indonesia usually is clear and light compared to west indonesia, where coconut cream is widely used. 7. Lombok, home of the spicy chiken dishes. Ayam taliwang most popular. 8. Manado, spicy and seafood heaven. These are just a couple of examples. Indonesian cuisine is actually still under the radar compared to neighboring countries. But at least on par to thai and vietnam etcetera in terms of taste and quality. All the regions in indo share a few same dishes(though with their own characteristics), but they also have their own signature dish. From west to east.. West, lots of coconut curry based and coconut based broth, central indonesia(java), use of peanut(peanut based dishes) and lots of fried and grilled stuff with fresh sambal. Going to the east, lots of chilli based dishes and clear broth soups.

Thanks Carlos. Really detailed. I only learnt a little bit about the different dishes of each region but it's good to get an explanation of the main distinctions in preparation or ingredients used for East to West. For foreigners I guess Bali is best known but I do plan to travel more across other parts on Indonesia on my next trip.

@@NigerianKitchen next time you go to indonesia, maybe you should consider sumatra first. Due to demographic reasons the food here shows similarity to malay and some part of thai food, but with its own characteristics. Then head to java. Jakarta and bandung and go further east. Especially Jakarta will come handy if you are short on time and budget to travel across indonesia. In jakarta you will find all sort of dishes from almost all region. Sure, its not as authentic as the place of origin. But close enough. Jakarta itself also has its own signature dish, which i consider one of my favorite type of cuisine. Soto betawi is a must try. Nasi uduk another classic. But yeah, i can go on and on😂. If you need some info dont be shy to reach out. Peace bro.
