Indonesian Military Training Is A Fratricide Nightmare

Күн бұрын

Some pretty wild footage from Indonesia shows instructors firing rifle rounds to within inches of their troops who are crawling through a mud pit below. This type of training is designed to instill some level of stress on recruits, and the US Military has versions of live-fire training like this, too. Only, in the US Military, the rounds are flying dozens of feet over the low-crawling servicemembers versus hitting the dirt. Bullets do all sorts of weird stuff when they impact something, like ricochet, deflect, and bounce. It's only a matter of time before training turns into fratricide.... - ‪@RonnieFit‬

Things you should note: 1. Trainees are guided with rope to prevent them crawling to the sides 2. Firing squad only allowed to shoot on either right or left side of the trainees 3. They use sharp live rounds 4. One and only casualty was on 1960 named M. Sholeh. He was shot in the head by 7.62mm GPMG round, which is more dangerous than what they use today.

My father was going through army basic back around the time NAM was going on. When I was a kid he told me about the training where you crawled under barbed wire while machine guns are firing a couple feet over your head. He used to tell me if someone freaked out and tried to stand up they'd have gotten shot. Fast forward to my own time in basic in 2011, they still do the same thing but they fired around 10 feet over your head, there's no way you'd get hit. I was actually mildly disappointed they dumbed down the danger level. But this...This is something else entirely. I don't know if I could have done this without pissing myself. Those guys must come out the other side carved of stone.

Indonesian here, the drill name is "Dopper" in other word means "Baptist" inspired by several combat situations during war against communist in 70s. The drill used to be implemented on special forces only, but since there is zero casualties within these decades, this drill is currently implemented into some other main units. As you can see on the instructor's cloth it says "KOSTRAD" (Komando Strategi Angkatan Darat) or Army Strategic Reserves Command. The Dopper instructors usually are chosen among champions from international shooting championship such as AASAM, etc. So they are definitely top sharpshooters using bad recoils guns like AK-47. There is no conscript/draft for joining military in Indonesia, and the cadets knew/noticed what they will be face before joining the army or chose the unit. Wich means they have FREE options to take it or leave it. IF they killed in this drill, they will be considered as KIA.

We did similar when training in the US Marine Corps. We had to low crawl through muddy, wet trenches and under barbed wire, exactly as they're doing in this video. Except the Marine instructors fired several feet over our heads, rather than shooting at the ground near us. They did have little explosions that shot mud and water up into the air, but that was caused by compressed air underneath the ground in certain areas. In addition to firing real weapons over our heads, they also had loud speakers *blasting* the sounds of a battlefield: the sound of explosions, gunfire, men shouting orders, men screaming in pain or horror, the sound of bullets hitting metal; the *snap* sound of bullets passing nearby; etc. It was actually extremely intense. It really put into perspective how terrifying actual combat is. Even though this was just a simulated battlefield and we were perfectly safe, I remember my heart was racing, my adrenaline was pumping, and I even felt sick to my stomach just from the tension and adrenaline rush. It felt so authentic.

@@bengale9977 Yeah it actually depends a lot on the guy who's firing. Also, bullets can ricochet off small stones and other bullets. That is the real danger. Also, if you look closely, they are firing in a pattern of two blank rounds followed by a loaded round. In effect, they are reducing the risk by 1/3rds. The guns that they are shooting are marksmen rifles, which have almost nil lateral deviation, so if they avoid the outline of the soldier, they're clear. But yeah, it mostly depends on how strong the grip of the shooter guy is. A weak wrist will result in stray shots and injured cadets.

@@richardjames1812 Yup. You're right. Most of them are AKs with the stock on. Also, if you look closer, you'll see that the barrel is different than what we usually have on the AK. It might be an Indonesian adjustment, IDK. By placing the gun on the beam, they are eliminating hand support to align the gun with the target vertically. This allows them to use the hand for lateral control, so that their bullet doesn't deviate laterally. Also, they fire live shots near the legs of the crawling cadets. This is because if any bullet ricochets off a previously fired bullet, it will hit the lower body of the cadet, thus preventing him from being fatally injured. These are just a few of the precautions i've noticed them take.

Sure but giving your soliders gun shot wounds even before war is hmm i donno how to put this. Getting shot or getting injured during this exercise it's unnecessary in my perspective. It's better to train the soldiers on tactics and hammer it into their brains so they follow the order due to muscle memory. Sure there is this shock that they get when they are under enemy fire but even after that training they will still be under shock cause the intent with which the bullets are coming at them are different. Especially when one of your guys get shot fatally right in front of you that puts you off your game.

This is exactly what my father told me, he is an infantry officer in the Indonesian Army. And what we se here is a special force(Kopassus) training. My father used to tell me that the special force didnt need anyone whos the smartest, anyone whos the strongest, the army have their own standards.. that is why theres someone who are smarter and stronger than my father but they didnt pass this special force recruitment. The army wanted someone with the ability to think straight underpressure and underfire and not too much questioning an order or being a smartass.. and someone with the average strenght but not too much of a brute force that cant make rational decision and being reckless.. good enough, well rounded, effective, team-player, good leader and know what their doing.. thats what the army wants for the special forces.. and this training is one of the example they wanted to build a soldier towards the goal

This is absolutely insane and morally questionable, however there is no better way to simulate taking fire. It’s not the the noise, or the splashes, it’s the fact YOU KNOW it’s live ammo. There is a definite possibility you will get shot, especially if you panic. It’s going to dump your adrenals, make your legs jello, and give you that floaty disassociated feeling. Now when they experience that in combat, it won’t be a shock as they’ve had that look before. IMO this is a very intentional and calculated high risk training technique and definitely effective to improve combat composure.

@@1767hfdh incorrect. Hard training that has killed people has made soldiers better prepared for war. Countries like this are just more accepting of the risk. General sir Peter de la belliere in his foreword to the book, the anatomy of courage. Speaks of his time as a platoon commander in Korea in the British Army. And that he without a doubt unquestionably accepts that hard training with live rounds landing near soldiers, explosions etc simulated the best experience of battle that they could get. It unquestionably saved lives, at the expense of a poor, unlucky few who were killed in the training. Harsh but it's reality. Want harder soldiers? Put them through harder training. Btw, I don't necessarily know the best way to simulate battle, it seems like this could be done much safer, with the same effect, i.e crawl lanes under razor wire to prevent people bolting away maybe? Furthermore, weapons that are strongly fixed and only able to pivot up and down a lane, not side to side. Reducing the risk of human error.

I went through Marine Corps recruit training in Fall of 1984. This appears to be an attempt to recreate a certain exercise in our field training that has removed the safety requirements that protected us as we maneuvered through the muck and numerous obstacles. Every military field training doctrine in the world has a legitimate need for exposing recruits to some form of combat zone experience. Then there's this. What this is has to be the design of some officer in command staff who has no clue of the physics associated with a high speed projectile served up to recruits in high volume. Even a piece of rock breaking free from a bullet strike can kill. Of course it is always a good possibility that we are watching a training course made by a leader or officer who is a "royal" family member, whose sheltered upbringing and lifestyle failed to instill the concepts of empathy for a fellow human being, and that of safety in the workplace.

I think this is pretty bad ass. In training, I didn't get shot at directly like this but rather they shot over us and we were told to stay down so we didn't get hit. As part of US Army Infantry training (I went through Benning, Sand Hill, in the early 90s) we had to go through a "Night Infiltration" course. After a brief land nav at night, we arrived at a very high log wall that required teamwork to get over. Once over the log wall, we had to low crawl about 300 meters, or c. 1,000 feet to the far woodline. There was all kinds of barbed wire, pits with deep mud puddles and other obstacles. As we're crawling our way through that mess, explosions are going off, causing temporary night blindness if you happened to look up up at one, and M60 machine guns constantly firing right over us. The crack of the tracers and bullets as they flew past you was something to remember and seeing them bounce off the ground into the night sky behind you made it really intense! If you stood up, you'd get hit, so stay down, keep your head in the mud and get to the end. A thousand feet is a long way to low crawl and our knees and elbows were rubbed raw and bleeding after that. It's a good indoctrination of things to expect in the Infantry
