instead of saying "selamat sore" you can also use "selamat petang" these both mean the same! but "Selamat petang" is more often used in formal situation. Cheers! by a native Indonesian speaker :)
@valdhanaen87337 жыл бұрын
yup petang is Malay one. but we Indonesian understand petang as sore. but its rarely spoken.
@reyantm11 жыл бұрын
Night only use when you want to end your conversation and not use to starting another conversation. Simply, when you meet your friend at 8 pm say Good Evening and talk, when you want to end just say Good Night. Good Night and Evening both have the same meaning as Selamat Malam but use in diffrent situation. So, actually when it's 3 pm - 6 pm you have to say Good Afternoon or Selamat Sore. PS: The Indonesian time is diffrent from any other country like USA, UK, or Australia.
@johannalikumahuwa812510 жыл бұрын
"Selamat malam" bukan "Good night", tetapi "Good evening". "Good night" dipakai setara dengan "Selamat tidur" (dalam bahasa Indonesia) atau akan berpisah dengan seseorang pada malam hari.

But, because the majority of Indonesian people are Muslim, you will often see people using "Assalamualaikum". "Assalamuaalaikum" is Arab sentence. Assalaumalaikum = "Safety (welfare and peace) to you"= "Keselamatan (kesejahteraan dan kedamaian) untuk mu *based on a KBBI (Kamus besar bahasa Indonesia) (large dictionary of Indonesian). If anyone greets with Asslamulaikum , we must reply with Wa'alaykumussalam. Wa'alaykumussalam = "And safety also for you" = "dan keselamatan juga untuk mu" *remember not all Indonesian people using Assalamualaikum.

Hi Fira, thanks for the informative videos. I'm curious to know what's the difference between 'bisa' and 'boleh'? I send my kids to learn bahasa Indonesia in Australia, their teacher is native Indonesian and when i read their lesson notes on the Indonesian language, I realize that it's not the same as being spoken by the native Indonesian speaker while it's very much similar to Singaporean Malay language which is a Baku language. Why is that so? Why it turn out to be sounded as its spelt and not as it's spoken by the native Indonesian such as instead of 'nggak', in their lessons they are taught to say 'tidak'? I'm really puzzled. I will greatly appreciate your kind reply and clarification on this. Thanks.
@IndonesianPod1016 жыл бұрын
Hello Liv Beau, thank you for your comment. :) “bisa” is can/could and “boleh” is may in English. Most of the time, the usage of “bisa” and “boleh” is very similar to “can” and “may” in English. As for “nggak” and “tidak”, the former is mainly used in casual settings while the latter, as you have pointed out, is a formal or baku word. School is one of formal setting where “tidak” is used in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. When a teacher use “nggak” to students, s/he may want to engage in a more casual conversation with the students. “nggak” is “tidak” in Betawi/Jakarta dialect and has been picked up by the rest of the nation. In national television broadcast, you may pick up “nggak” being used in TV movies or commercials, however, you will never heard it being used in the news. Salam, Sarah Team IndonesianPod101.com

You forgot petang. And in reality often you just use pagi, siang, petang/sore and malam by themselves. There is no need to use selamat in informal settings (eg in a shop) and the locals won't either. Then when leaving you can use sampai nante, or da da (not dada which means chest) ... da da is used by the central Javanese and they call the dialect there Java or Jawa. You should change your fingernail colour to blue or red or purple.

@@aidiero and btw "what day are you coming?" commonly translated as "kamu datang hari apa?" or "hari apa kamu datang?" Both are the same thing and "when is you birthday?" Is "ulang tahunmu kapan?" Birthday is literally translated as "hari lahir" but it's more common to say "ulang tahun" which literally means year repeatment. Those are all informal and it's impolite to say those to someone who's older. To someone who's older, change the "kamu" to that person address like if it's someone who is 60 years or older you can say "kapan ulang tahun kakek?" Kakek means grandfather. And if you have any questions i can help you if you want :)

I came here in search of verification of how to say GOODBYE in Bahasa & was surprised to find "Selamat Tinggal" with NO mention of either Selamat Jalan or Selamat Datang. What happened to THOSE expressions? Still in use? Plus, the way I learned Bahasa (when I lived in Jakarta in back in 1967 & 1968, when I was 13) was every "J" sound was preceded by a "D." Anyway, KABAR BAIK! I'd never heard "Selamat SIANG" before... only '-Pagi, -Sore & -Malam' so the '-Siang' option is a new one for ME after all these years. So, y'all... stay SAFE and selamat tinggal! [12/10/2020]
@juicytoes772 жыл бұрын
we have many sentences to express "good bye". selamat tinggal, selamat jalan, sampai jumpa, sampai bertemu kembali (see you!), etc. but in informal situation, instead we use "dada/dadah!" selamat siang is widely use in daily conversation. so it's not a new slang or expression. this is basically what makes us, indonesian students, hard to understand how do english-speaking people say "selamat siang" and "selamat sore". because all we know is they have morning, afternoon, and evening/night only.
