I'm Hispanic. I was born in Texas but my dad was from Mexico. All my friends spoke nothing but English. My dad didn't permit English in our house so we didn't speak around him. I failed Spanish 1 in Junior High and Spanish 2 in High School. I left the border region for 10 years and spoke nothing but English. I couldn't speak it, but I understood basics. One day a friend from Nicaragua started taking me across the border and introducing me to Mexicans that spoke nothing but Spanish. I was embarrased, but this time, I was motivated to learn. So I did a total immersion, TV & movies in Spanish with English subtitles, reading in spanish and looking up words in the dictionary, etc. What helped me learn Spanish the FASTEST, and I learned it in 3 months, was singing in Spanish. I started liking Spanish rock & pop and so I printed out the words, bought Spanish music kareoke and started singing in Spanish. Next thing you know, I was having full conversations with my Mexican friends. They were in shock how fast I picked it up. So in shock that some of them knew English but were afraid to speak it in front of me because I was able to speak Spanish like a born and raised Mexican after 6 months... their slang and everything. That was another big one. I bought a book of Mexican slang. If you learn Mexican slang, oh man, you are accepted like their family. That's what took me to a level that will blow their minds. Even though I have an English accent, when i use their slang, they freak out. They don't know what to think of me, other than I become their best gringo or pocho (spanglish) friend they know.

I’ve learned so much more Spanish and understand the principles much better just from watching your channel than I ever did in high school. And…I really did want to learn Spanish way back then. Have you ever thought of writing a book yourself? It’s very difficult for people like me who are trying to jump to the intermediate level. I just wasted $21 on an audiobook that is supposed to bridge that gap, but it falls way short. I would buy your book! You’re a great teacher! The best way to become fluent in a language is to go back in time and tell your parents to take you to Spain or some other Hispanic country before the age of 13 (and be exposed to Spanish at 3 years old at least). Of course, you can't do that, so the best way to become fluent that actually works is this one. 1. Full immersion. Listen to and speak as much Spanish as possible. 2. Think like a Spanish speaker, Mexican, Colombian, whatever. Study the words by their intrinsic meaning and use and not their translation into English. 3. Be intuitive. Find root words, study the prefixes, use what you know and write down what you don't. 4. Move to a Spanish speaking country with at least an intermediate level, and make some bilingual friends. 5. Focus on vocabulary that you're interested in learning. I'm a native Spanish speaker myself and I barely know the parts of a car (yesterday I learned the word guantera, the chest thing where you store CDs and documents right in front of the copilot seat).

Something that isn't often pointed out by tutors of other languages, is that modern English bears far less resemblance to its archaic methods of phrasing than romance languages. For example, in this video, Paul used "En lugar de" to translate "Instead of". In times past, Instead was two words: "In" and "Stead". Today, we've condensed it into one word that is parsed in our head in a slightly abstracted way, and only in very formal or intentionally archaic writing do we separate these words anymore (much like the word "anymore"). Virtually no one casually says things like "In another's stead" these days, but languages like Spanish do. It can help a lot to listen to 'ye olde timey' English to wrap your head around how people phrase things in other languages related to English.

OK, I just ordered the book. It better be good! lol So, many Spanish phrases can easily be inferred. Like the example "en lugar de" (instead of). The literal translation is "in place of" >>> which can also mean "instead" (and that's how most translations show it). Other translations: "in place of" (which I already mentioned). Also, "rather", instead of", "in lieu of" (from Google Translate).

finally a video that gave me an "ah ha" moment. perfect. been on babble a lot and watched different videos here on youtube but for the most part its all very baseline stuff and very direct but these "tricks" are very necessary for developing a deeper understanding.

Tenía curiosidad de como se enseña Español y vine a ver vídeos y me encontré con este video específicamente; Puedo decir que me encantó tu forma de enseñar español. Lo haces ver tan fácil de comprender. Estoy yo aprendiendo inglés, tengo un inglés avanzado ahora mismo y a veces pienso que es difícil pero luego veo que en Español las conjugaciones son más complicadas y se me pasa 😂

If you have Netflix or other ability to charge the speed of the playback, watching tv series with both audio and subtitles in your chosen language with really help. I say series over movies because the language used across the series is similar so you hear things repeated, not as much in movies. I’m a couple of years into Spanish and watch La Casa De Papel (Money Heist). I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner but a good intermediate will advance for sure

As always, felicitaciones (a “tion-ción” cognate many people probably don’t know in English! 😅) for another great video. Instead of “en lugar de” I more often use “en vez de”. Basically interchangeable phrases, good to be aware of both. But I realize “en lugar de” may make more sense to English speakers (in place of). How does “in time of” translate to instead? Well, Word Reference to the rescue. I just discovered today that in Spain, “vez” can mean time OR turn. I’ve never heard it mean that in Latin America. Always learning something new.
@claucemicro1080 Жыл бұрын
In Mexico we also use 'vez' to refer to time. For instance, "Voy a probar esta comida por primera vez" ("I'm going to try this meal for the first time"). I think the usage you've read or heard is 'vez' to mean 'occurrence'. E.g. "Te dije dos veces que hicieras la tarea" ("I told you twice to do your homework").
@mwiebe2663 Жыл бұрын
@@claucemicro1080 Well, it turns out there are multiple definitions and usages for “vez”. From the DRAE (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española), arbiters of all things to do with the Spanish language, there are 8 definitions for vez: 1. f. 8. f. pl. Ministerio, autoridad o jurisdicción que alguien ejerce supliendo a otra persona o representándola. Hacer las veces de otro. Hacer uno con otro veces de padre.

@QrooSpanish I have a couple of languages under my belt including Spanish, and I have recognised that the native English speaker needs a preliminary introduction. If you agree with the points, maybe it's worth a 10min video? 1. Let go of how you think a language should be and how and what you can express verbally. No one language is a perfect form of expression. Stay neutral and open. If not you'll risk blocking when coming across things like "A mi me gusta" or the subjunctive. 2. Interpreting what you want to say is better than translating what you want to say. That way, you can open your mouth and "shoot from the hip" with decreasing mental processing delay over time. 3. Direct translating is a road to madness. Don't learn a translation, learn "synonyms" and "concepts" if you can, it becomes mostly about the grammar. 4. Watch kids TV. Read kids books to begin with. Don't be shy or proud about it. Dora the Explorer was made for a reason. 5. There are concepts that can't be easily expressed in Spanish and there are things that can't easily be expressed in English, either. Learning Spanish will give you words and concepts you never knew existed. 6. And maybe most importantly. Nobody is inherently bad at learning a language. That part of our inner-child that took us through English still exists in everyone. Tap into that inner child. 7. Pronunciation is so important. When speaking, our mouth and tongue are always poised in natural preparation for the next syllable. That's going to be different. With bad pronunciation it'll feel and sound very awkward. Really apparent in Spanish with "R" and "RR" Think pero, perro and the difference in how the -o sounds. You can't get to the O with and English R. I failed French at school (my mum was a French teacher too) I too thought I had no skill in language at all. Now I'm fairly fluent in both Spanish and Danish but these are the things I had to get over on my first language journey (Danish).
