On August 17, Indonesia’s Independence Day, a group of Papuan students were accused of vandalizing the Indonesian flag and were subsequently arrested by the Indonesian police. In response, violent protests demanding justice for the students erupted in West Papua, and the Indonesian government deployed additional military and police forces to contain the situation.
In light of this escalating conflict, how do ordinary Indonesians feel about Papuan people and the current situation? What do they think is the most ideal solution to resolve this ongoing tension? Our Asian Boss reporter Ramzy hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss in Jakarta, Indonesia.

You know, I think it would be better to interview the Papuan students who were accused or native Papuans, not people in Jakarta who I bet mostly doesn't even know what really is going on. We need a fresh perspective.

lyfkat that would be great but it's probably harder to get access to people in an area that is currently experiencing issues. hopefully they'll be able to connect with someone in west papua for their perspective. for me it's interesting just to hear how the average indonesian feels about it anyway, even though they may not have first-hand knowledge of what's going on. understanding what the average indonesian believes is still going to be a huge part of the equation when it comes to resolving these types of conflicts. for better or worse, politics revolves so much around public sentiment

I've lived in West Papua for more than six years in the past. I moved to Java for school and one of the most commonly asked questions from my classmates here in Java was: "Do you guys live on trees?" "Do you wear clothes?" "Do you barter things instead of using money?" and I think that pretty much sums up the understanding that people living outside or far away from Papua have. "Appreciate and respect the diversity of this country" is a rule that has been drilled into Indonesian students for years, and I can say that most of their sentiment only reaches that extent. They see Papua as an asset as opposed to a family, and saying "They've been a part of Indonesia since the beginning. If and it must be possible, they should stay with Indonesia. " is just a textbook statement.

After the tsunami,my fellow Indonesian students organized a charity event for the Indonesian people. As we all lived in Germany, they chose to present their country. When they spoke about Papua, they showed traditional pictures with people who have bones in their noses and spoke about "wild" dances. One one hand, it represents the culture. On the other hand I was a bit disappointed about this portrayal. They didn't talk much about what else goes on in that region.

@Riceee Balls Yes, I agree with you. My friend that came from Kalimantan also faced the same questions as I did. However, the fact that the majority of people who claim "unity in diversity" aren't aware of what 'diversity' they are referring to is sad. Like, we spent all those years in school learning PKN/civics and people still pose those questions in a racist manner.

The exact same thing happened to me when I moved to Java for school. I came from Sumbawa (an island that's on the right side of Lombok, unpopular region but we're definitely not uncivilized or didn't have any kind of technology), and the students basically just think that I am a neanderthal that suddenly came out of the jungle to study science

The last part of the video nailed it for me. When the interviewer asked "what do you think would happen if Papua seceded", residents in the capital raised up biodiversity loss and loss in 'ownership' of Papua's natural wealth. The image of Papua in the interviewees' minds is forest and swathes of natural resources, no one mentioned anything else about their culture. There is a brief mention about loss of talent but it was not specific, and an erosion in the meaning of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. "When they go we will miss their natural resources" was the message that subtly came across. Indonesians WANT to think of Papua as family, but picture a husband married to someone and the wife wants a divorce. Ask the husband "what would be different after your wife leaves you?" and the husband responds with "well there's no one to clean the house and cook for me anymore." The wife's presence is degraded to a utility, which is similar to how the Papuans are regarded only for the natural wealth that they have. It's time to think seriously about what kind of people they are, explore and understand deeply their culture, beliefs and history. Join the Papuans in celebrating themselves. Realise the family that is founded on the principle of unity in diversity. But these steps start from a reckoning that we currently have a failed system that excludes rather than includes.

all Indonesians should find out how Papua joined Indonesia in the first place. it wasn't good. i as Indonesian only learned abt it a couple yrs ago. it has changed how i view the situation with papua. there are many things abt the Indonesian history that weren't taught at schools on purpose. just some noble lies to keep some or the majority of people happy. this and many other propaganda hv been going on since the New Order under Soeharto's presidency. i hope Indonesian will do their own "due diligence" especially in dealing with this kind of topic.

check your sources and learn again about history. Parts of West Papua was part of Kingdom of Tidore before being annexed by the Netherlands. There were papuans in the Jong Ambon delegation - on the request of sultan Tidore - during the sumpah pemuda 1928 when the students declared themselves as one nation - Indonesia. In Linggarjati Agreement 1946, Papua was agreed upon to be part of Great East, which would became member of Republik Indonesia Serikat. The Dutch Colonizer however unilaterally cancelled the inclusion of Papua in future RIS. Pepera was acknowl3dged by the UN, and inclusion of Papua as part of Indonesia is final. even in 2018 presidential election the election system used in Papua is based on noken system - not 1 person 1 vote system. that system had always been used due to the tribalistic culture during General Election in Papua, and is considered valid.

Cultural context: 1. N word: in indonesia, N word didnt have a racist connotation, because indonesians think N word is just a name of ethnicity or lineage (more like calling someone anglo saxon etc). Only in US primarily that N word has slavery connotation. Indonesia didnt have such history. In fact, sometimes calling people black seems to have a worse connotation than N word in indonesia. Only lately due to usa culture that N word becomes more unacceptable 2.yes, a lot of indonesians are very racist and discriminatory to minorities (ethnic, religion etc). This issue had been a lot more rampant lately because of the election, and some ulamas with extremist views are getting bolder without repercussion from govt because govt wants their electoral votes (such as somad). 3. I can proudly say that I never have any negative racism thought toward the West Papuans and actually quiet shocked when I found out years ago that they were also being discriminated. I admit I was pretty ignorant that time thinking Indonesian natives get along well and only the Chinese Indonesians were discriminated. When I found out that some people I know and pretty close (my co-worker and my middle school friend) could actually be very racist toward East Indonesians, I was speechless and shocked. That also made me sad as well. To have someone you know can actually thinking something really cruel is more impactful than some news talking about racism issue. I also heard a painful story from my brother, how his friend was discriminated being a West Papuan. As double minority (by ethnicity and religion), West Papuans and Chinese Indonesians, are being discriminated in completely opposite way. WP is being treated lower, like they don’t exist, less than human while the CI is being treated like thorn in their flesh. They feared West Papuans while Chinese Indonesians feared them. I don’t hate native Indonesians and I understand perfectly there’s always good and bad people no matter what color of their skin or their religion, I have friends from different religion and ethnicity as well. However, as a Chinese Indonesian, I’m still afraid whenever there is political turmoil in Indonesia because we always become the target. In fact, by the end of 2013 and beginning 2014, before the crucial Presidential election, there were many robbery toward Chinese Indonesians’ house in my city. There were three attempted robbery at my house and I was inside. Lie if I said I wasn’t scared. My family isn’t rich, however we aren’t poor either. The sad truth was these robbers couldn’t get to the real rich ones’ houses because they usually armed with high security. We’re just hoping that government put action toward racism and acknowledges the long bloody racism history in Indonesia.

Evan Pangaribuan As I said, I didn’t notice discrimination toward them until I witnessed it myself. Government seems always giving (not many) but still some seats for them. There weren’t any news before about their discrimination, usually it’s always about Freeport and OPM. Discrimination toward them is more in their daily life, like being called monkey, smell bad, primitive, etc. In my case, my co-worker refused to eat in the place owned by papuans. I didn’t get it when she said it was ‘dirty’ because I ate there many times and the food was fine. There wasn’t any fly and the atmosphere was nice. Not until, my other co-worker explained to me later what she meant as ‘dirty’.

1294DS Even Chinese Indonesians are varied, there are racist and non-racist ones. On general, I think they wouldn’t say much if it’s not directly effecting them. I’ve been living in US these past few years, so I could only ask my family and some friends’ opinions. When I asked about it before, they didn’t say much or didn’t have any opinion about it. “Oh yeah, that’s currently on the news.” That’s the answer I got. Right now, the west papua issue has been buried/overshadowed by another political issue in Indonesia.

People only talk about how the rest of Indonesia wants West Papua because of Papua's natural resources, but the reason is way deeper than that. The very principle foundation of the existence of a country named "Indonesia" is as the successor of The Dutch East Indies, in which West Papua was also a part of. That's why the first president was very adamant in "taking back" West Papua from the Dutch control in the 60s. Because without West Papua, there's no Indonesia.

I hope that all my fellow Malaysians from now on will know that Indonesia is an incredibly diverse place, not all Indonesians look alike, not all Indonesians are Muslim, not all Indonesians are Malay or Javanese, and last but not least, there are people in the far east of Indonesia who resemble a mixture of Orang Asli and Australian Aboriginals. I hope that all my fellow Malaysians take note of these facts from now on.

I think the issue going on in Papua is not as simple as it might seem... yes, it’s true that people from Java have a lot of racial tension towards Papuans, but that is not specific towards Papuans but towards a lot of people groups in Indonesia (Im a chinese-descent living in Java, so i know what being “racialized” feel), after all there are hundreds of different racial groups living in Indonesia ...especially those who are so different/coming from the eastern part of Indonesia, because we are too Java-centered in Indonesia... that is why our president, President Jokowi, made the move to move the capital city to Borneo, so that Indonesia is becoming less centralized in Java and can reach out more to these eastern parts of Indonesia... also, he has been developing Papua a lot in the last few years to reach out to the people, and this I know from people actually living in Papua and experiencing the changes... However, we should also know that politically there are people who try to sabotage his presidency... from inside, yes...but also from outside... one of the moves Jokowi made during his presidency was the gaining back the control of Freeport in Papua from the US, guess who doesnt like it? Also, there are countries around us who has been eyeing Papua with the resources since a long time ago... and now they are portraying what’s happening as if it’s simply a human rights issue? Dont get me wrong, i do think that what’s happening in Surabaya at the dorm is wrong, but I just want to say that it is much more complex than simply a racial issue becoming big...

You do know Papua wanted to be independent from the very beginning? Even before Indonesia invaded they had their Morning Star Flag. I don't know much about politics in Indonesia, but I feel a little sorry for Joko Widodo. He inherited lies and although he didn't expose it which is sad, it seems like he did the best he could do with what he had. When the protests started in Papua, I saw many Indonesians outraged that the Indonesian Army didn't go in there and slaughter many, many Papuans or as you call them separatists. I saw "Banser" mentioned many times. An army group I guess. I am appreciative he didn't do that. Wiranto - This is just my opinion, he seem like a sly and egotistical mf. Although I don't know much about him, it's just the vibe I get. I don't like him. Sukarno - His the one that started this fiasco with Papua. No respect for him. Suharto - This is the one who Indonesia should be most pissed off with. More than any other politician. He seems to be a dictator and I would definitely feel betrayed by him if I was Indonesian. Do the Indonesians look up to this guy? These are just my opinions looking in from the outside.

Well, West Papua isn't supposed to be a part of Indonesia if you ask me. Historically Indonesia did alot of violation to get their hands to Papua. They did military agression and intimidation towards papua in the 1960s with the help of USA. They broke the New York Agreement by not letting West Papuans to vote independently regarding the freedom of Papua, instead Indonesia forced Papua to do a conference with Indonesian soldiers all around them to intimidate. Now they act like West Papua is their family.. lol I would say that that's family abuse!

It's so sad to hear Indonesians repeatedly using Bhinneka Tunggal Ika to justify why they want Papua to stay a part of Indonesia. The fact of the matter is that Indonesia has been failing the Papuan people constantly. They are being marginalized and discriminated against, simply because of the color of their skin, their land and resources are being exploited, but they receive next to none of the benefits from the deals Indonesia made off of its resources. If you look up the history of how Papua first became a part of Indonesia, you will find that it wasn't so cut and dry. And this part of history wasn't taught to us at school. The Indonesia-Timor Leste conflict is also not fully discussed in school, the human atrocities that our government did during that conflict, like the Santa Cruz incident wasn't part of our curriculum. It is such a shame that a country who is supposed to be a democracy is censoring its history as part of our education. This is also the second time that Indonesian government has cut off the Internet and communication lines "to prevent the spread of misinformation". It is making it almost impossible for the media to obtain the Papuan's side of the story, an attack on our supposed freedom of speech. If Indonesia cannot find a way to do right by the Papuan people, then it is only fair that Papua should demand independence. Indonesians need to reflect whether their reasons for wanting Papua to remain a part of Indonesia is because they truly love Papua and think that that is the best for Papua or because of selfish reasons, not wanting to lose the natural resources that we keep exploiting from that region.

As is always the case all over the world, its usually the goose that lays the golden egg that seems to be most marginalised. West Papua has all the natural and mineral resources plus biodiversity that places Indonesia in the class of resource rich nations. However, because the people have a different appearance, they are treated unfairly and are seen to be inferior to the rest of the population. The fact that this very scenario is repeated in most countries of the world is quite unfortunate.

Some of the interviewees featured in the video talks about the importance of referendum and priniciples of democracy. It would be a lot worse If Asian Boss had an interview with citizens of Beijing about Tibet, Hongkong or Uighur issues. Even if they still showed kinda 'Imperialistic view' about West papua, I have to admit that their opinion is a lot less nationalistic and totalitarian than I expected. As a Chinese Indonesian, I side with the Papuans on this. On paper, Indonesia is a fair, democratic, and tolerant country. Unfortunately, this doesn't translate well onto paper. Even after this event blows over I'm sure anti-Papuan sentiments will remain. Just this year when the current president won votes, his opposition protested with small riots and said the anti-riot police were made of Chinese people from the PRC. 🤦 They even say the president has Chinese ancestry (he doesn't) to insult and devalue him as a leader. Unless fundamental changes in education are made, widespread anti-Papuan and anti-Chinese sentiments will linger.

typically in these situations the minority itself creates or further enforces the segregation based on ethnicity , That happens in many countries. However , after Indonesian police failed these people, I think maybe Papuans do deserve their own autonomy , because genocides are not unheard of either. Indonesia could get ahead of a bad situation by giving Papuans a place they can feel secure and free in, and following that, perhaps in time that would allow the situation to heal and Papuans would warm up to indonisia once more, even as a separate country.. I know this probably won't happen because people are greedy, but one can hope people learn something from watching history.

Such a shame they're easily brainwashed by the *"Woke College Aussie Kids"* , They would abandon west papua, just like they abandon East Timor. If I were the president, I'll let them vote if they want to leave Indonesia and be free, if they chose to leave then leave. Still, we're losing to aussie, giving up west papua for them. Expectation after freedom: Singapore, Malaysia, etc. Reality : Zimbabwe, East Timor, etc.

Papua is a valuable resource to Indonesia, that is the truth. The government will not give that up as there is a massive lot of natural resources to exploit. How ironic to think that a former colony becomes a colonizer itself.

Indonesia, despite claiming to be secular, keeps trying to enforce Muslim laws on everyone, as well as sending thousands of Muslim settlers in eastern Indonesia, majority of which are not historically Muslim areas. Then when riots and killings start happening, the police (most of which are also Muslim settlers) side with the Muslim migrants, not the natives. Remember it was only a decade or so ago when settlers burned churches and Christian villages, and beheaded schoolchildren in central Sulawesi. Same with similar situations in Bali, Maluku, and of course, East Timor. Papua, which is even less culturally similar to western Indonesians have it the worst. Aside from the racism, there's also the fact that the government ignores them, only noticing them when they're harvesting their rich natural resources. Indonesia treats Papua almost like its uninhabited. As if Papuans are not people. You don't even see or hear anything about Papuans in mainstream Indonesian media. Papua should be independent. Period. P.S. Yep. Everyone basically just says they don't want to lose Papua because they don't want to lose natural resources. Nothing about the people. All they care about are the riches of Papua.

I deeply understand the fact that West Papua needs their Independence. It is happening everywhere throughout Asia. Take for example, Tibet from China, or Hong Kong from China, or Kurdistan from Iraq, Balochistan from Pakistan or Catalonia from Spain. Only because of the difference in ethnicity if we want to secede from a country, then there will be about 8000 different countries on this planet. Instead of increasing borders between the countries, we must take an initiative as an individual that without seeing differences between the divides, we must see the greater unity of humanity. This will not only increase trade and economic prosperity, but also teach us to live and learn together. "Unity in Diversity" is a very bold statement and the example of it is set by the European Union. So in conclusion We must strive towards the idea of embracing everyone's belief, right? So why discriminate? This is not going to benefit anyone.
@sayoksarkar1106

@Just the everyday Bihari streetshitter I am not infuriated by your reply of mocking at my ethnicity because this will not take me anywhere, but initiate division between us. Culture and traditions are to denote acceptance and accessibility to the people belonging to a particular group. I don't mean to deny the fact that North Eastern India is in distress due to such atrocities. I just said about the regions that wanted to gain their Independence by seceding from the Nation. Even if they did secede and form a separate Nation, they will fail because of hyperinflation and other major factors. I don't believe that North Eastern Indian states want to become separate national entity. Sorry, if I could not convey the message that we need to be pro-globalised than restricting our boundaries. Becoming more accepting will help us create a sustainable environment.

@Just the everyday Bihari streetshitter The divide will take us back to the period before people became civilized. Hurling abuses will not help... You can throw as much curses as you can by sitting at the other side of the internet... My intellect may not be as mature as you to text abusive words but I am way more positive than just your negative comments. India is blessed with the Northeast. There traditions are our priceless possession. It is just that the societies need to be more on the sides of the rape victims. Most of them tend to isolate the entire family or even worse the victim gets disowned by their family. The constitution needs to be amended to give stricter punishment to the rapists. To give a firm message to all the rapists out there. My ideas may sound lofty and ideal but these needs to be adhered to make progress as a society. There are always two sides of a coin and one may disagree, but I am open to there thoughts as well. Because I think nobody is wrong, it is just they are different. If I just believe that every human on this planet is my hands and legs, we will make a better society. Because a sane mind would never harm itself, so there will be no question of harming other, right?

"They've been a part of Indonesia since the beginning" No haha. You only got it in the 1960s after the international community put pressure on the Dutch to hand it over to you with the promise that the Papuans themselves could decide whether they wanted independence or not. Afterwards, Indonesia committed large-scaled fraud with the promised independence referendum and basically became the new colonizer of the region.

Many people don't understand what really happen about Indonesia Independence even most Indonesian themselves Basically, there's many kingdoms, tribes, and many other groups in their land before colonized by the Dutch, they all fight separated battle against the same invader. But, when people in Java island finally could proclamate independence they basically claim everything previously controlled under Dutch rule as one 'Indonesia'. All who oppose this forced union will face military resistance like the massacre in Aceh and Timor. Luckily Timor resistance gained Australia and UN attention and some years later Soeharto dictatorship crumbling down and replaced by president Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie.
