My home is small build in 1950. It has no subflooring. I had the crawlspace encapsulated rim joist as well. It’s still cool down in the crawlspace even during the summers. The electric furnace is in the attic. I’m waiting to install a new furnace. I’ll install that new furnace into the crawlspace . I’m trying to warm up the hardwood floors during the winter with the new furnace in the crawlspace. I’m going to install a dehumidifier with the new furnace when I get one.

Have gone the full Monty from CSN to work on removing humidity in house/crawl space (Aprilaire 1830, vapor barrier plastic, plastic fasteners, seam tape, butyl tape, indoor Aprilaire small air purifier, Lomanco vent fan, styrofoam blocks to seal vents). Still working on finishing work in crawl space as there is no one in the area who does this work properly. But thanks to CSN and their videos and customer service, I feel confident to tackle the task. So thankful for CSN and their help during my DIY venture.

My husband and I would be SO thankful and appreciative to win this dehumidifier! We have been battling and fighting humidity in our crawl space for almost 2 years now. We thought we had it fixed, but as soon as we started the adoption process a month ago, we noticed bubbling in our bedroom floor. My husband went under the house to assess the situation, turns out we had 89% humidity in our crawl space!!!!!! We are looking to get this fixed ASAP so we can bring a little one into a safe home❤️ We have scheduled a consultation with you all and can’t wait to work with you. Thank you for all you do and the information and education you provide. God bless you! Coming at you from Arab, Alabama!

We are just beginning to work on the crawl space. We add a room addiction several years ago. Added two sump pumps due to water coming in both sides of the crawl space. The only dehumidifier i have is a two foot tall LG 70 pint unit. I need to clean the rim joist before i can seal them. Long way to go.

Got a hillside home in the forest in TN. Very humid. Sealing under all baseboards, behind the shoe molding, really helped reduce airflow from crawlspace up to living space. Also sealed all crawlspace vents, and the crawlspace is now way less humid and smells better. All the hardwood floors in the home now have gaps because they've shrunk after decades of being too humid. Wow. Eventually would still like to encapsulate and dehumidify it.

Currently have a big big box store dehu trying to get the moisture down in our crawlspace. We started out at 86-88% and as of today it's holding 65% . I have closed all the vents off with foam board as near to r10 as I could get with the exception of one that has a crawlspace exhaust fan to remove soil gases. My wife and I both battle bad allergies and I have chronic sinus infections and didn't know why until I started watching your videos. We are currently scheduled with you guys to come out and take a look to help us out. And I'm looking forward to it. We have been battling this for over two years and I am normally a diyer but in this situation I knew I needed to call in help. As a young man never battled a high moisture issues in our home, I tried to "move the high moisture air out " with a box fan and opening all the vents to which I found my crawlspace raining moisture. Once again thank you so much for the videos and how you help diyers. Not many companies will go so far to lose business to make customers feel comfortable and proud of their own work. God bless you guys and I pray he blesses you business.

Our home was built in 2016. Even today when I talk to builders they don’t understand encapsulated crawlspaces. I am having to encapsulate by sealing vents, installing a vapor barrier that isn’t a joke, and installing a dehumidifier no thanks to our home builder’s poor work. You all have the best most accurate information by far on the Internet regarding crawlspaces and I thank you for that. If you serviced my area here in the northern panhandle of WV I would call you in a heartbeat.

We have been in our home for 18 months, replaced our heat and HVAC but still have problems keeping it comfortable and we have noticed mold in various areas of the house and a musty smell. Found subpar vapor barrier in the crawlspace so we got some estimates for encapsulation but cannot afford to have it done, so DIY it is. We have watched all the CSN videos, thank you Michael Church; ordered our barrier and supplies from the DIY store and have the Aprilaire 1850 on the way to dehumidify our crawlspace and vent to our HVAC. Very excited to get started and confident because Michael is so very informative. I would love to win the Aprilaire 1820 for our second story unit. Thank you for your kind words and support! To prevent the water from being drained constantly, look into installing a condensate pump for the dehumidifier. By doing so, the condensate pump will pull the water out of the dehumidifer, you just lead the drainage tube to outside of the crawl space and you won't have to empty it until the 6 month maintenance.

I just purchased a home last month, and was going to replace the carpet. It spiraled into a major project; soft floors, mold, leaking drain pipes (kitchen sink is not even connected to the drain system)there is standing water under it, questionable joist, and an insuffient deteriorated vapor barrier. Everytime I work on this house I get sick, so now I use a respirator. I been watching multiple video to help get an understanding about my issues. I how found your videos to be the most educational, they make sense, and i feel your very passionate about your profession. I am just getting started; fixing leaking pipes, and see if that takes care of the standing water issue. Next, will be drying out the 72% realtive humity crawlspace with a dehu, and vent covers. Thank You for your videos!

We had that musty smell in our basement and decided to paint the concrete walls, but to no avail. Afterwards we also had the crawl space encapsulated by a local company, that area is better, but there's still an unfinished section around our sump that seems to be retaining some moisture. We are looking into putting down epoxy on the unfinished slab, but are researching dehumidifiers as well! Upstairs we also added a air purifier from a Wirecutter recommendation and replaced the weather stripping and seals around our doors.

Air sealing, air sealing, air sealing! We recently purchased our first home, which was built in 1906. We love old houses, but the building envelope behaves much differently in an old house than in new construction. Some of my first projects have been repairing plaster to original standards and priming them with an air sealing primer. In addition to that, proper attic insulation and sealing. It will be a never ending project, but we're improving our air quality one project at a time! We need to dehumidify more than we'd like right now since our foundation exterior drainage isn't great, and somebody covered the (once breathable) fieldstone and lime mortar foundation with a portland cement smear.

We have started our crawl space improvements this year on our 40+ year old home which is new to us ( young first time home buyers). First step was to seal up all the oversized holes that were cut for the piping coming thru the floor. Next we installed a French drain in the crawl space along with a sump pump to eliminate any standing water / potential water intrusion. We could use the dehumidifier as the next step in large project of controlling our air quality

First time home buyer, and after becoming concerned with the HVAC costs per month in these hot summer months, I decided to check out my crawl space, which was poorly 'redone' prior to our family moving in. Turns out all they did was spray for mold and take the existing vapor barrier out, and didn't install a new one to replace saying one was not necessary. Well, I'm seeing mold growth on some of my frames in the crawl that disagrees with that assessment, so I've started watching your videos to get a good sense of what a truly clean and taken care of crawl looks like.

My neighbor and I had you inspect and provide a quote to solve our high humidity and mold issues under our crawlspace. I was out of town and dealing with family issues. The 25K solution was way outside my budget as this house is not our homestead place. I will be retiring in 3 years and plan to move to North Georgia. My neighbor and I have viewed numerous of your videos to educate us on how to properly install your products and plan to do the work ourselves. We both are starting with closing off the crawlspace vents and installing the Aprilaire 1820 Dehumidifier and Lomanco PCV1 Foundation Vent Fan. After removing any standing water and starting to dry out the crawlspace, we will work on the drainage system and slump pump installation. More to come.

We have been restoring an 85 year old farm house, and the crawl space (1000sf) is next on the list. It's very tight (less than 18inches in some areas) but we have no water intrusion issues, just NC humidity and musty air. I work in the insurance business so I'm going to have the clean-out and minor mold remediation done by a restoration service, but I'm hoping to tackle the sealing and dehumidification part of the project myself. Once the clean-out is done that Aprilair dehu sure would be useful to start to stabilize the humidity levels under house.

Recently bought a house that has a crawlspace, my first, and want to make sure that it is controlled the best it can be. I have allergies and the space is too musty for my liking. I want to make sure the air quality in the crawlspace is acceptable since our air handler is installed there. I recently came across your KZbin site and have to say i really like the information you offer and will continue to watch. I just saw that there is a location not that far from me and will probably be requesting an inspection and quote. Thanks, Craig Wooster

Thanks for all your tips. I had major gutter/groundwater runoff penetrating my 2 crawlspaces and put in underground pipes and a grate to redirect the enormous volume of water. This helped eliminate the water seeping through the crawlspace walls and now I need to work to level the floor and encapsulate.

So glad to hear that helped! Thanks for sharing. We don't always recommend leveling the floor since it can also cause water intrusion in the future if the dirt becomes unsettled. However, you can do some slight grading if needed.

@@CrawlSpaceNinja I did see your videos where you talked about that. My crawlspace is about 12' tall. The footer is already basically trenched out, so there's just a mountain of clay in the middle with about a 7 foot difference in height from the footer to the top of the "mountain" in the middle. I cannot see putting down vapor barrier over that mountain, and I want to begin to utilize the space for storage but as it is, it's a fall hazard.

I became interested in IAQ when I changed my non-smart thermostat to a smart thermostat that gave me higher than optimal humidity readings. I then bought a sensor that measure temp, humidity, CO2, TVOC and PM. Whenever any of the 3 latter readings go up, I open the window sacrificing a little bit of higher temp and humidity as a result. As a North Texan, I don't think I can open the windows in the afternoon come summer. I am now looking at ways to address humidity and ventilation and maybe in the future filtration and purification. Thank you for the video as it helped raised my awareness.

Air purification: I got 2 Leviot air purifiers to help improve some of the air quality now without breaking the bank but plan a crawl and HVAC overhaul later. Plan on going from vented crawl to closed crawl, replace all the underinsulated lines on the HVAC, and upgrade to a more efficient unit.

Back in September we bought our first house that seemed like it was in good shape. Our inspector said that the crawl had a little moisture and was no big deal. "Just install a fan" fast forward one month and he was dead wrong. Every time it would rain the crawl would fill up with water. For whatever reason there was a old sum that would fill up and over flow. We had a full interior drainage system put in and it helped tremendously! Would love to add a dehumidifier to the crawl to cut down on moisture down there and keep our family safe.

Love your videos. I’m embarking on a diy full encapsulation of my crawl space. It’s very intimidating as I’m a bit of a perfectionist. We’ve been told a 70 pint dehumidifier is insufficient for our 1700 square foot crawl space. I couldn’t help but notice you say that the 70 pint worked for up to 2200. Loved your allergy challenge testimony. What a great mission you’ve embarked upon. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your support! Yes, our Aprilaire 70 pint dehumidifiers can typically cover up to 2200 sqft. If you have a tall crawl space and/or feel like you need something a little more powerful, the 1850 is a 90 pint dehumidifier that can cover up to 3500 sqft. But from our experience, the 70 pint Aprilaires should be sufficient for the size crawl space you have. Hope this helps!

Just purchased a home and during a recent rain storm I noticed what looks like a stream of water coming into my crawl space in three different location on the east side of my home and now I’m trying to figure out how to correct this issue and the AprilAire dehumidifier would be a great addition to correcting my crawl space issue I have. I’m going to install a French drain to help slow or eliminate water intrusion. But in middle TN I’m not super confident it’ll stop the water intrusion. But it’ll be a step in the right direction. Depending on how much it stops or slows the water will be if I need to add a better sump pump or not. Once that’s done, the poly and dehumidifier will be the final steps.

Bought this house last summer and figured out that my almost 6 foot tall crawl space with 26 vents stays very humid(47% in December/January). Being in a very humid climate it only gets worse throughout the year. Unfortunately I currently cant afford the 22 thousand to have it fixed, so I am going to have to diy it. Working on getting the funds together for the dehumidifier and looking for a source to purchase the rigid foam board similar to the one crawlspace ninja sells but doesn't ship. We bought our house 2 years ago and severely struggle with humidity most of the year. Our crawl runs 75-80% with the lowest being about 65% in the winter. There is a layer of plastic but it wasn’t done well and water gets on top and we get the waterbed effect in spots. The walls and rim joist are are also closed cell spray foamed. Which we’re actually going to remove the foam from the rim joist because we think it’s trapping moisture and rotting sill plate, joists, and rim. (Learned that from your insulating rim joist video) We’re running 2 dehu’s (70 and 30 pint) 24/7 in our living spaces. It’s basically impossible to keep the house at 50%. We’ve been watching Mr Church for several months now and are planning to DIY encapsulate with everything we’ve been learning from Crawl Space Ninja. Our plan was to get an Aprilaire to start. Put in a perimeter drain and trenches. Put in a deeper sump pit. And end with the vapor barrier. We’ve learned so much from the videos. Hope you consider us for the contest. Thank you 👍👍🤗

I just moved into a house that I am going to be completely renovating. Before I moved in I spent months gutting just about everything I could and handling an issue with varmints that had done a number on the crawlspace insulation, flexible hvac ducting, thermostat wiring and attic insulation. There was also a roof leak that has created a lot of mold in a spare room. Also during a recent window replacement I realized that there is no exterior sheathing on the house. Instead I found 1/2 inch foam board that hadn't been taped or sealed in any way. I am probably one of those that is suffering from indoor air quality that is 100x worse than outside air quality. I know the stack effect is in full effect in my swiss cheese house. I won't run my hvac until I am able to address a lot of the air quality issues. My plan is to tackle the crawlspace first and create conditioned dehumidified space then remove insulation in the attic and create conditioned space. Lastly I would like to remove the siding and sheath, insulate, seal and re-side my house before adding an air purification system to the house. Winning an 1820 would put a small dent in the overall cost of my lofty goal.

Just came up on our 1 year mark for a newly built house. We had a home inspection to take to our builder for any 1 year warranty issues. I was surprised to have mold in a house so quickly (vented crawlspace). The builder "remediated" the mold, but obviously this is going to be an on going issue. Having dealt with this previously at another home & the health issues we experienced, persistent cough and accelerated/worsening eczema, the only solution is to do an encapsulation. I began watching many of your videos to prepare to do this project myself correctly. Having a construction background I know that I can effectively do this, w expertise from a pro in the field. I am hoping to head this off before it can get any worse. Hats off to you for sharing your wealth of knowledge .

Do you know of a reputable company in the Richmond VA area or have an affiliate? Had one of the big companies come out for an encapsulation quote, price was $11.41 per sq ft to encapsulate w 20 mil barrier foam board w termiticide & a ducted Aprilaire 1850. This seems to be on the high end as it did not include removal of existing batt insulation, any remediation, or drainage system (builder installed foundation drainage system). DIY is looking more like the route I will be going if other quotes come back at similar price point.

In the process of properly insulating my crawl space underneath an addition that was put on by the previous owners. It is a dirt floor and they only put fiberglass insulation in the “ceiling” between the floor joists, so the room above is freezing! I have gotten so much good info from your videos on how to do this project properly. I have cleaned it out and patched some holes in the cinderblock, put a 12 mil barrier on the floor and up the walls (no pillars), and cut the foam insulation for the walls. Will finish putting them in place this weekend. Definitely took longer than I thought, but it’s coming out good. The dehumidifier would definitely complete the project.

@@CrawlSpaceNinja hey I do have a question about my crawl space French training system I've got the trench dug all the way around the inside of the crawl space and everything pretty much gravity drains down to where my sump area is and I understand how the corrugated pipe works when the trench starts filling with water the pipe then fills and carees it to the pit and you need a gravel bed under the pipe and then gravel on top of the pipe but my basement is at such a slope that the water basically just travels through the gravel without even reaching the pipe so if that's the case can I just skip perforated pipe and just have the water drain directly into my sump what you agree that's a good idea thanks look forward to hearing your response

Yes standing water around the perimeter of the crawlspace. Which finds its way into the finished half of the basement and floods the floor there.

It sounds like it would be beneficial to invest in some sort of perimeter drain and sump pump to help get this water out and away from the house, and if the flooding in the basement continues, you may need a drainage solution there as well.

We're struggling with smelly crawlspace air entering our house from beneath as well as moldy attic air from above due to poorly sealed HVAC ducts and the choice of the previous owner to spray foam insulate the attic. The attic regularly hits 60-70 humidity, and the small dehumidifier we've added isn't able to compete with the moisture coming from the hvac (and elsewhere?). Sure could use some advice on if the attic should be ventilated instead of 100% sealed, or if it's just the poorly sealed ducts that are generating the attic moisture. We love our aprilaire crawlspace dehumidifier and could really use one in the attic!

My name is Bruce. I live in the Detroit area. I have a 1200 square foot Ranch and I've been struggling with a moisture problem for many years now. I've tried to do everything on the cheap. I made my own ozone generator with a neon light transformer, tin foil in quart jars and computer fans. My crawl space is a cement crawl, about 5 or 6 vents and one sump bucket and pump. The unfortunate aspect of my crawl space is whoever did the cement didn't taper everything to the lowest area and then install the sump. As a result I have at least four or five low standing areas where water accumulates and sits on top of the cement. I found myself on very rainy spring days with a wet vac sucking out as much as 50 gallons of water. To attempt to remedy that I installed two more sump buckets and sump pumps in the low areas. All the same I still have water collecting in other low areas. Whoever built my house never put perimeter drains around the foundation. I've had a couple of companies out to look at Solutions and after what I've read and studied from crawl space Ninja I realize these guys a far off base. One fella just looked in through the access door. He wasn't willing to even go in the crawl. He suggested that we feel the crawl space full of gravel and run a dehumidifier, and this was a very reputable company in our area. Anyhow my wife is been getting sicker and sicker more and more congested and this year I have to get serious spend some money, here's what I'm going to do I'm going to purchase in Aprilaire 1820, line crawl space with pool liner, dry the place out. After this go ahead and treat the floor joists with the anabec solution you spoken about. Thanks so much for your Sage advice. I'm a do-it-yourself guy but at 65 years old crawling around in the crawl space is getting old. Can you recommend anyone in the Detroit area that can help me at least with the sealing of this job. One other question, seeing that I still have low spots that accumulate water on the cement crawl would it be prudent to just put pool liner over those areas or do I need to go as far as setting up perimeter draining? And one other thing, what's the best way to approach my insurance company for help. You needn't try to answer the question, I'll give you a call. Oh and by the way if you decide to give the 1820 to me, I'll be singing your praises all over the Detroit area. Thank you.

Hello Crawl Space Ninja. Last year we moved from bone dry Tucson, Arizona to Durham, North Carolina. Your videos and clear explanations have been absolutely crucial in addressing all our crawl space woes. From the house we were renting, to becoming first time home buyers, I keep finding myself burning through your videos to better understand that a healthy home starts under your feet! Just finished cleaning up the crawl space, installing a new vapor liner. Plan on sealing the rim joist, and possible encapsulation/dehumidifier when the budget permits. Thanks!

We live in South Carolina and have a crawl space that is EXTREMELY humid. It was so bad that I thought that a water pipe had broken. Plumber came and told me that it is just the extreme humidity. I plan on sealing the inlet vents and installing a dehumidifier. The Aprilaire 1820 would be exactly what I need.

That's a good place to start. It's amazing how much humidity and condensation can affect your crawl space.

My crawlspace is currently sitting at 82% humidity here in Georgia. One of the factors i see driving it is my hvac ducts increasing moisture through condensate. I have all intentions of encapsulating it once all of these health and financial crisis are over. This dehumidifier would be a good start.

Just came across this video and I'm sure glad I did. I was almost set to purchase a whole home dehumidifier, but after watching another video from Crawlspace Ninjas, it got me thinking about my crawlspace. I had put a vapor barrier down when we first bought our home 5 years ago, because of a mold and moisture issue not fixed by a remediation company prior to buying the home. They came in, supposedly got rid of all the mold, but never took any steps to stop it from happening again. Five years, and three beautiful children later (our daughter is 4 years, and our two sons are 2 years & 4 months) , we are worried about the high moisture content and air quality in our home way more now then we ever we're before. So I am now on my journey to totally encapsulating my crawlspace, which it would be wonderful to win a crawlspace dehumidifier from Aprilaire to use along with the whole encapsulation. I'll be keeping my 🤞 Thank you for helping me change my mind about the whole house and teaching me how to get to the root of the problem and I looking forward to watching more videos and learning as much as I can from you.
