This video will show you how to prune and propagate a rubber plant, rubber tree or ficus elastica.
This is the start of a video series on a rubber plant intending to shape it like a tree.

i watched this video last may and decided to follow what you did with your rubber tree.. i had 4 cuttings from the mother plant and it took me 5 months for the cuttings to finally have roots (well 2 out of the 4 cuttings was able to produce roots) and as of today the 2 rubber tree plant have new leaves already as well as the mother plant. hope i can send you pictures of my success..( is there any way i can send pics :) ) thank you for inspiring me to do this.. i'm also yrying my luck in propagating rubberplant cuttings, aug7 i placed the leaves and cuttings in water and change water every2-3days, now i'm starting to see white root-like in the cittings, still hoping for improvement 😇

Your plant location is very good, just make sure it is not too hot or else the leaves will burn. Watering can be done only when the soil is almost dry. You can check it by sticking your finger 2-3 inches on the soil, on that way you can feel if it is wet or dry.

Heyy! I have a question. If you cut a branch off with a few leaves like you did, can you just propagate the whole thing instead of cutting it into pieces? Will it still shoot roots that way? Thanks!

you can try to do that but I never tried yet. Soon I will do an experiment with that. But I think it will root well too.

For how many hours that grow light stays on over the plant? Won't the plant get burn if you directly lighting it with grow light above it? I'm scared to do this with my rubber plant but if it's beneficial then I will do the same. Thanks

I generally kept my indoor plants under grow light for 12 hours a day. Choose the led grow light specifically for plants and the distance over the plant usually depends on the strength of your grow light. There should be an instructions when you buy a grow light. Also LED Grow Light won’t burn your plant just make a good distance or you can do an experiment.

About benefits of it, it is really good for plants specially when there is no natural light reaching your plants. Based on my experience it will make your plants grow better but you should do some research and choose the best quality lights.

I actually propagate during summer except on winter. But you can propagate anytime just make sure that you kept your cuttings in warm area to encourage rooting.

Hi Amy Lynn, yes that is a good idea to prune it and propagate the cuttings. Keep your rubber plant in a bright area near the window or add a supplement grow light and it will grow well.

Pruning your plant by cutting the stem with the leaves on it not just the leaves. This process will encourage the mother plant to branch by 2 or more just like what I did on the video. But your plant should received enough natural indirect light or artificial light.

Hi Judiel Gonzales! You can go to any plant shop near from your place. This plant is very common one and can even find from your neighbor. If they are generous enough you can ask for a small cut and propagate it. 😉😊

Is loam soil and rice hull sufficient for the soil propagation? Also, is compost same as worm castings?

Any kind of soil is ok for propagation as long as it drains well. Adding rice hull to your loam soil is good because it increases the aeration of your mixture. Compost and worm casting are different. Compost is a combination of organic materials that are needed to process or decay in order to become good for the plants. While worm cast can be readily use for your plants or to be added to your soil mixture.

April Ingal you can add compost or worm casting, it will help and make the plants healthy. And putting plastic cover to your propagation will speed up the rooting of the plants.

Growing season means your plant is actively growing and your going to see that in your plant. While this growing period is happening it is better to apply fertilizer to assist the plant and supply the necessary nutrients needed for them to grow more.

Water propagation is the easiest method. Just keep your cuttings in water and change the water every week. Keep your cuttings in bright place but not direct to the sun. Or you can use grow light too.
