I have a induction cooker, which I'm not a fan of. You're totally right about it creating a hot spot near the middle. Also, due to the discrete controls, sometimes it's either too hot or not hot enough, with no ability to choose something in between. I like your recommendation on using the induction mainly for liquids, not for frying. That's good advice.

Yeah i just moved in to a new apartment with an induction cooker and i don't like it. Also after watching this video, i'm surprised it's only 5 year lifetime!
@techplainer
@techplainer 2 жыл бұрын
5 year lifetime is a rough number. Actual life depends on the brand, control type(touch or button), and how you use it. If you use your induction cooker at the highest heat setting for a long time, it will negatively impact the life of your induction cooker. So, If you use your induction cooker properly, it will last much longer than 5 years. And if you use it incorrectly it might not even last for 5 years.

Cooking for one, me and my cast iron skillet. Perfect burger size hot spot, I can fry my hamburger to perfection as a skillet remains cold. I understand your displeasure, I gather you can understand my delight. I'm excited I didn't have to heat the whole pan paying for it. How low can I go as my strategy on how much I want to pay for utilities. I invest in efficiencies and my bill keeps going down even as the fuel cost goes up. Cooking a pan of fried chicken, it takes a lot longer so the pan warms up. I live in a cabin in Alaska in the woods. I tried regular hot plates ,they were slow. I had an infrared hot plate and that seemed to dangerous and was very slow. Indeed the most efficient way to heat and boil water, seemingly each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages. Induction heating is unique. The eggs or French toast will not burn when set to the right temperature. The hot plate will die if you put it on sear and you walk out to take care of the dog as it never turns off and gets too hot. I recommend and never press the highest setting, been there already. They're not very expensive, at Walmart. Everyone should have one and put it to use. I have both resistant and induction hot plates to cook on. I don't have an oven and I don't want an electric bill to go with one, living in my one room in a large log cabin. Heating the building was 1250 gallons of fuel oil the first year and I did not stay warm. Large Toyostove wss too big off and on off and on until the starting element burned out, I replaced it after I repaired it what's the smallest Toyostove that limits no fuel consumption to 2 gallons per day and I'm comfortable and warm, love heating the house, the heat leaks into the house and has maintained about 30°. Slowly circulating well water in the water room eliminated electric. This year I will use about 300 gallons, slightly less, fuel oil to stay warm, about 1,000 gal less per year. That's $5,000 this year in savings on oil. As electric bills have climbed, this year's electric bill is nearly $600 less than last year. How to invest the savings to make the bill go down even more. Portable heat pump that runs on solar once it warms up to 50 degrees outside.

We moved to Induction 9 years ago and fell in love with it from day one. We replaced our old two induction hobs with one unit that has two induction surfaces but we are very unhappy with the brand after a few months I'm throwing it out. Two days ago we got our first Infrared it looks very cool with a stainless steel case. Was immediately disappointed with the time it takes to cook. 1Ltr of water took 11mts to boil on 1600w & my old crappy brand induction took just 7mts on 1600w But one thing I have always struggled with is Steak, due to that darn Hot Spot. So this video has given me some hope. Slow to start I can get used to if the end result is a win. Thanks for the brilliant comparison 👌🏻 Will update about the steak (with cast Iron skillet) and if it auto shuts off if the pan is removed.
@zAlaska
@zAlaska Жыл бұрын
What do you remove the panic doesn't instantly shut off it quits sending power with nowhere to go. While you're draining your pan it will go beep beep beep beep beep letting you know something's up and get back to work when you put your pan back onto it. A simple solution to the hot spot, just remove the pan around. Use the right size pan rather than the huge one. When using the huge pan you can have half of the pan really hot keeping ready cooked hot on the side or you can heat the whole pan hard just by moving it around. How can you use the hotspot to your advantage? Putting your big pan on a hot plate with the old-fashioned coil not large enough for your pan, a similar but slower result. I like being able to fry a burger and the cast iron handle remain cool in the time it takes to make one burger. Cooking ten burgers, the handle will be hot. The best part about it is the worst part. It very efficiently heats without waste heat. And is very fast. Perfect pancakes might be difficult in the wrong pan. Steak requires a hot pan and doesn't require tender loving care and gentleness. You've got to move the pen just like you've got to move the food.

I've been using induction cooker for about 4 years. I always struggling to make things like fried rice because the pan is heated too quickly and not evenly, and most of the times the lowest temperature is still too hot or stop giving any heat at all. I'm thinking to get a hybrid induction + infrared stove because hopefully I'll be able to utilize the best of both options. Good video!

I've used both . And I say induction cooktop is no match for a infra-red cooktop . I've used prestige pic 23.0 & infrared from a local market . Induction cooktop feels safer but not for cooking . Because you really can't control the heat . I mean there is setting to lower or higher the heat but it's not the actuality . In my case , the induction cooktop consumes a maximum of 1.6 kW and when you set the heat at highest level , it keeps heating continuously but if you lower the heat level , heating starts continuously for some second and then heating stops for some second to let it cool down and again restarts heating after a short interval (recognised by humming sound) . The lower you set the level of heat , the lower the interval of actual heating becomes than the interval of "not heating" . In short , either it consumes 1.6 kW(including fan and cheap) of energy or 0Kw(+power required to run cheap and fan). In the case of infrared , there is a normal even heating and if you lower the heat level , it actually lowers the consumption of electrical power thus providing continuous heat at different heat levels .

if you like old school gas cooking like I do then go for an infrared cooker you will enjoy it far more trust me :) I cant stand the heat spots and pulsed on-off of the induction cookers it just drives me nuts. it's either too cold or too hot so you end up burning majority of things your cook from adjusting controls all the time :/ if I'm at my mum's cooking I'll drag my camp cooker out and cook the backyard XD it's far more relaxing and enjoyable :)

Please do an updated comparison with a standard hot plate (1000W or more). LPG, Petrol, Diesel and electricity crisis in Sri Lanka atm. Hot plates have been sold out since the 1st lockdown we had last year. If you can find a hot plate the price is x3 or x4 the price. Induction and Infrared cookers were not a mainstream items so most big electrical retailers only had a few available but at medium to high price when compared to a standard two burner LPG cooker. Saw some Induction and Infrared cookers today and the prices were crazy!
@zAlaska
@zAlaska Жыл бұрын
She included a comparison. I have the two in my room. I can choose my favorite and I always choose the induction. Sri Lanka is beyond the scope of understanding. If one can get solar panels to directly connect to red coil electric heat it can work. Induction requires AC. Flush with cash, buying induction uses less fuel powered by a generator. Long-term savings might make this a good investment. Without power it's meaningless. Heartbreaking.
