You've explained it pretty well. I'm curious as to what a Product Design Engineer's portfolio who'd look like and a comparison with a Product Designer's portfolio.
@username1907bu3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your definitions! from my experience as a product design engineer, I definitely think about the workings/technology first, and only then I try to make it look nicer. Priority for the Product Design Engineers is mostly to make stuff work from the inside. And for example, in the company I work for- the styling comes from the Industrial Design team

Exactly! It's great when teams have people looking at the problem from both angles - working on different aspects will create a more rounded product

True, both the things go hand in hand. Great product has both aesthetics and engineering as key factors.

As I understood, while Product Design Engineer focuses more on the Technology, Product Designer is more concerned with its overall appearence an structure.And as a senior on ID, I think that technology,appearence and structure are essential and indispensible for Industrial Design's Product Development phase. Thank you Sam for your videos with informing and enlighting comments🙂.

I did a design degree before and have now finished both my BEng and masters in mechanical engineering, so I'm basically both. It's interesting to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Did you pursue a master's degree in mechanical engineering, or did you study for a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering? I am an Industrial Designer and would like to pursue a master's degree in mechanical engineering, but since it is a very technical field, I am not sure if it is possible, and the only path may be to study for the bachelor's degree. Now, I was also considering whether it would be more feasible for me to pursue a master's degree in design engineering, which seems feasible from my position. I would like to know about your experience. Regards.

Great video Sam, totally agree and love the terminology of outside in vs inside out. The terminology is also fluid when it comes to University course titles - studied PDE at two separate universities and first was very inside out with very little HCD whereas the second was very HCD focussed and outside in but combined the engineering elements for DFM not as an after thought but intrinsic to the process (just further down the development line). I think PDE is quite a British term, the US appears to have more of a traditional workflow of industrial designers handing off design work at DFM stage.

I do wonder if we should create a global design organisation that defines terms and clarifies things 😅 although the landscape changes so quickly that would be really difficult
@bendurack20123 жыл бұрын
@@SamDoesDesign haha can we create a design award while we’re at to make some serious dough? I embrace the fluidity, that ability to chop and change is what I think most of us enjoy about the profession - not knowing what tomorrow holds at work. At the same time, it can clearly be confusing to students 👌

In my experience, both points of view are important, my profession of origin is engineering, over time I studied the career of industrial design and I have both points of view when developing a project and I feel that it is a great advantage in all the points of the process, but this option is not easy for everyone because a lot of time and study must be spent.

Intersting way of putting it . Outside in / inside out. I work as a senior ID designer for me the importance of each is dependant on the product. Some products have more scope for outside in than others. In the complex products I think the key is in the balance. Create something that is not only technically sound but also user focused and great looking. The difficulty is then in making right choices/ trade offs to deliver the best balance. As an example once choice that could slightly reduce performance could have a drastic benefit to the user. So then you’d have a choice to make :) Nice video!

I'm a Mechanical Engineering Undergrad but I seem more interested towards ID. I have this vision of combining the two aspects simultaneously in my workflow. But I don't know how effective will it be.

hmmm, I get the point but even tho I am a trained Industrial Designer, I would never call myself an Design Engineer (even if I was doing similar stuff to and engineer) unless I had gone to university and studied in engineering AND design. From seeing the years of work engineers have to do to become and engineer, seems kinda cheating to call myself an engineer even tho I haven't studied it and am not certified as an engineer
@SamDoesDesign3 жыл бұрын
I agree, all of the terms are very fluid - it will depend on what you prefer to be called and which jobs you apply for. But if you get stuff done and bump shoulders with the engineers, I'd say you're allowed to call yourself one!

@beatfinkbeiner42153 жыл бұрын
I think that a Industrial Designer should think, decide and act from outside to inside to outside. All other thing is styling and not necessarily needed nor related to functional terms or sense of being. Therefore the terminology of „Why - What - How“ - in this sequence - is so immanent to the future of a Designer‘s existence. Most of companies and Designers directly go from ‚What‘ and ‚How‘. This lead to a shrinking sense of being in a role of industrial Design. Mostly, there is no time, interest or focus in history of technology. Trends or hypes which are not going to be re-questioned in their sense and root causes are focus areas instead of solid and full responsible, knowledgeable, concept-based solutions, which really answer to the core of the needed fulfillment, flexibility and growth to humanity...

I really appreciate this video! I just subbed. So maybe you can help me out here. I don't really know how to ask this, so ill explain what Im trying to figure out. So my entire life even as a kid, I've always loved modifying and improving things. Anything from taking leds and wiring them to speakers, to taking appart rc cars and combining them with air soft guns to make an RC airsoft rifle car, then adding more power to the gun and car.. to also taking a skate board and using some free simple software called tinker cad to design legs to turn the board into a shelf. What is this called? Ive always envied people who have careers in which they love, and I believe something doing things similar to the examples ive listed above might just be mine.. I just have no clue what that might be called or what schooling I should look into. Any info or advice would be sooo much appreciated! And could potentially change my life forever! Thank you to anyone who might chime in!

Do companies refuse to employ talented designers simply because they don't use the same design software? For example, a designer who uses Rhino and Keyshot while a company uses Solidworks and Keyshot.

Not like physics or engineering, but you need to know some tricks to be able to work well and fast. Same as architects, designers need to know a lot of geometry.

If you go for bsc or eng as your bachelor. Then maths can really help you pick up the concepts easier. Otherwise it will take some extra effort on certain aspects. I found the theory not that bad and I wasn't a maths focused person.
