As an industrial design student, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate these videos since there really isn’t much ID focused content out there. Love your channel!

Nice review Sam! Really enjoyed seeing your thought process and your authentic feelings when going through the projects, whether that's excitement or confusion! Looking forward to the next one.

It's surprising how often I get confused when looking at portfolios

I think that the Scope project you chose has clearly taken inspiration by Geemo of Cas Holman. It's always inspiring to see how any project can be the base for new designs. Great video btw :)

Really liking the format of Dos and Don'ts, thanks again for another great information video.I like part about being hirable or not, would love to see that specified for each portfolio reviewed but i understand that it might be a contentious point as it is very subjective and potentially hurtful to some people. Thanks again for your hard work with this series and all the help navigating this topic.

I am an ME (robotics) and self taught ID. I get most of my ideas from existing technologies. buying a raspberry pi and some sensors is a good way to understand existing tech and then coming up with concepts using what already exists. Industrial designers who make up dream tech doesnt work anymore. The trend in design firms is towards more practical designers who can write a bit of python code and less towards realistic renderings.

Both ways are equally important, I feel! I don't know any industrial designers who code though

Funnily enough the contextual design module at Brunel was renamed to Advanced Design Innovation last year. Which makes even less sense. Also one of my favourites. Btw thanks Sam for these videos, your videos got me into design and now I just graduated. Been a crazy journey and I'm excited for it to continue

As a mechanical engineer the way I look at the portfolio is a bit different, especially the drone in the first one. I was more bothered that they didn't highlight the rotor blades design because its kind of the most important part and tells us how it flies and from the way it was designed/structured I think it would also need a jet engine like the ones in air planes

Sometimes designers show "notional" engineered areas that can be figured out later to focus on usability and design intent first. That's why designers need engineers, and engineers need designers 🙌

Hi Sam, I absolutely love your videos and I learn a lot from the little tips you share with us. I am a student pursuing Robotics engineering and I am into ID more than my own course. That being said, I am self taught and I render my designs in a quite plain way. I just wanted to ask how do we get renders with people in it? How do we add those elements (people) in the renders and make them blend in so well that it feels real?

Hello, quick question, the modular flower pot holder was cool, how was it rendered? Perhaps blender? Do you think the flowers and plants were found models?

Hi Sam ! Just curious how you view websites and if you are considering opening up the submission to also accept links for the review? It seems the trend moving towards websites is growing, maybe it is just the case at my school but I have seen a big shift in these last few years. Anyways great video cheers!

That drill looks like it was designed by someone who had never used a drill. Are a lot of industrial designers this removed from actual work?

In the most respectful way the second portfolio is so frustrating to read through, it almost seems more like an art project than a serious portfolio to try to get a job, which is really unfortunate because it looks as though a hell of a lot of time and effort has gone into it. Something that I’ve hear seen Design Theory say multiple times when critiquing portfolios is make the reader understand the product. There’s no point having all these great renders if you can’t even communicate what the product does!

Yawned throughout this video, not because of you, Sam but because of how horrendous these "portfolios" were. Would never hire any of them. 1. Boring, nothing special about any of these. 2. These are more like rejected concept art as compared to industrial design. No practicality in the least, no showcase of functionality, no appealing of why this is better than solutions out there. For things like that mobility vehicle, I expect to see technical specifications(even if they are not feasible yet technologically) For me most of them just look like "I have to fill out my portfolio" and not "What would this product be like if it was actually realized?" That hydroponics one is the only one that is not completely terrible. Lots of good ones if you go to Yankodesign. At least put in some effort to learn from existing references.
