Valves are great. When i was in the military, i worked on the trucks that fuel aircraft. One day i was rebuilding the valve that lets you refill the truck. As i was putting it together, i tightened this adjustment screw tight, but not too tight. Tested the valve and it slowly leaked when i closed it. I spent hours going round and round trying to figure it out. Turns out, that vale adjustment had to be left loose a little bit. Once i set it that way and tested it, the valve worked perfectly. No more leaks.

I'm a retired mechanical engineer and one of my jobs was designing indusrial piping systems. Some old valve catalogs you may want to look at are Lunkenheimer and Walworth . They usually had cutaway drawings of how the valves worked. The way they used to form bends and other fittings packing pipe with sand , heating them, and bending on a table are pretty phenomenal. If you want big old valves try a scrap yard. We would throw bad ones in the scrap bin. Cheaper to buy a new one then to pay pipe fitters to repair them.

I kind of like #1 because of the red you put in there. I have a 6” Walworth gate valve in my basement that the previous owner of my house installed for a bathroom down there. Always wanted to replace that section of plumbing and just install a sewage pit with ejector pump. Nice video. I’d love to meet up at Bangor sometime but that’s an 11-1/2 hour drive from here. Have fun. Enjoy the weekend.

John, I wish I was still working at the power plant. I would have been able to get an old valve from the 1920’s when the plant was first built and send it to ya. That section of the plant is no longer in use, but a lot of the piping is still there. You should be standing next to one of those 24” check valves when they shut off a pump. It slams so hard sometimes, it will make you jump out of you skin, even knowing what’s coming. 😂😂

Great video ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 Looks like you’re getting pretty good at making those cutaway valves. I’ve always been enamored with cutaway firearms that show you inside how everything functions together. Had to laugh when you said “what kind of maniac buys a brand new $20 valve to cut in half? This guy.” 😂 My preference is cutaway number 1.

4. I installed a plumbing check valve on my first air compressor restoration and every stroke it went clank-clank. Then I learned compressors use a nylon ball style check valve....it's funny now that look back on it. Anyway, if all goes well I might get my hands on a big valve, which I think will make a good cut away. Great stuff. Cheers

I believe I replaced some light bulbs at a bank like the one john fix sent you. I remember the shape. I replaced them with fluorescent 9 watt . This was before the led craze. My problem with led is it does not last much longer then the 60 watt A19’s. Your number 4 valve I have on my industrial steamer I used for it bringing foam seats back to their original shapes. It also heated the covers to help form them when needed. My joke with it was I could shrink your full size truck down to a compact. It was a very informational show, thank you.

I have a few kits for rebuilding valves and faucets but we rarely use them. Unless the fixture you’re working with is very expensive the labor cost is prohibitive. Also, the water is so hard here in Illinois, usually it’s too shot to rebuild. BTW my dad says “slicker than snot” too lol. Mostly in regards to snow on the road! Love the cutaway vids SC!

Can’t pick one valve. There all cool. Worked on a many of valves in salt water cooling systems. Lots of heat and pipe wrench with 4 foot cheater pipe. Would break the valve open. Reassembly teflon and blue block . It kept them from galling the threads. And when serviced again , only required some heat and they would come apart easy.

I worked with control panels in the oil and gas industry. The indicator lights have a low voltage running through them at all times to keep the filaments warm. When they were inspected, you could check to see if the slight glow was present. If not, you would replace the bulb.

I will pick No. 4, but all the cutaways and the previous video on valves have been very informative. I never paid much attention to valves before so now I feel better educated. It's ingenious that gate valves could be servicable in the field, which makes lots of sense. About light bulbs, i never realized there was a cartel to limit bulb life, or even saw anything reported about it. I wonder why Big Brother never busted the lightbulb trust. My father was in the electric utility his entire career, and I can't ever recall that he brought up the issue.

Change is good when it’s better or easier to use. But now a days, they change things and make them worse and harder to use just to have a new version of the same thing so people will buy it again for no reason. Washers and dryers with all these screens and entertainment junk on them is an example. I don’t want to be entertained by my laundry machines.

Magazines are all about gone. TV going off the air in the middle of the night, carburetors, Sears department stores (nobody would have guessed that they would go belly up in the 1980s), Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and AMC vehicles, made in the USA electronics. So many things are gone that were once suburban household norms.

ScoutCrafter, In high school drafting one of the drawings we had to do was a cut-away of a faucet. The basic drawing was required in the basic drafting class required for an engineering degree. To me one of the highlights of Brandon's Inheritance Machining KZbin Channel is the cut-away drawings he does for his projects. You brought a smile to my face with your interest in valves and how they work. I have copies of Crane's Paper No. 410 which is the bible for doin piping pressure drop calculations. It was a required publication. I have had a St. Jude polycarbonate butterfly check valve for the past 39 years in my heart. Luckily it never misses a beat. Bob

I think No 1 is my favourite, but I love all of the cut-aways. The Industrial Grade bulb life is enhanced by krypton gas in the bulb which reduces how hot the filament glows, so extra life. The krypton gas was a lot more expensive back when that bulb was made. Dave.

They were made in the walworth factory. I can’t find much info online. I have a bunch in my house they switched it over to hot water but still kept the cast iron radiators and one part of the house added baseboard heaters. I always love seeing cutaways because to me understanding how something works in the key to fixing it when it doesnt work.
