I learned many many years ago the reason why celebrities do not really interact with fans is because there are a lot of lunatics out there. A lot of high profile celebrities have received death threats. We don’t hear about them very much, but they happen more often than we realize. So when celebrities seem standoffish, they’re not being snobby. They’re doing it for their own protection because they do not know which fan is a psychopath.

@kingcosworth2643Ай бұрын
I don't understand it either, it always came across to me as an attention grab, we've all met that gay guy who has to let the world know he's gay. Today as well the whole 'queer' identity has become trendy so there is certainly a market for it. People have less available to them to be passionate and excited about today, but your sexuality is something that can't be taken from you, so maybe that's why some people go with that, I really don't know.
@janeyrevanescence12Ай бұрын
Likewise. I'm bi and I don't talk much about my preferences, even among my few friends in the LGBT community. So much so that they're surprised. I got asked one time why I didn't embrace my "gayness" more and I said "There's more to my personality than that."

@gutwallst you may not, but for gays and lesbians it can be a great thing. The whole world is heterosexual, becomes pretty boring.
@SladeLАй бұрын
@@janeyrevanescence12 exactly, the lesbian and gay movement really had to advocate for acceptance and rights, dealing with actual discrimination and violence and death. The 'LGBTQ' identity ideology is a trend, and not many of them are actual homosexual women and men. Most are actually heterosexual with a hipster trans/queer 'identity', they have commodified sexuality. Also are many quite homophobic, same sex attraction is now transphobic and anyone can 'identify as' gay or lesbian without being homosexual. I detest it and many gays and lesbian with me. We are not objects to be used and then abused b/c we reject such a homophobic ideology.

The reason some fans / victims were mad at Tegan, even though they knew the perpetrator was an imposter who tricked them was to ease their cognitive dissonance. It is important to understand how the mind works, as it leads a person to subconsciously come to the wrong conclusion, in order to minimize cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance occurs when strong beliefs are challenged by new data. The mind attempts to reconcile the new data, while also attempting to keep the current beliefs. This causes discomfort and usually leads to the wrong conclusion, as the default setting is to keep the current beliefs. It is easier to fool the people than to convince them they have already been fooled. - Mark Twain

One of my friends who was in a popular goth band was catfished IRL. She was beautiful and this guy introduced himself as a former member of a band that was seriously famous. This dude was practically an identical twin to the real one. He had a huge house in San Francisco and a weekly gardener, house keeper, etc. Turned out the house was an inheritance from his grandmother and his parents were maintaining the house to eventually sell it. His mother showed up one day totally unexpected and lost her temper because he was supposed to be ensuring workers could enter when needed for renovations. My friend was there for the whole episode and packed her stuff to leave as he tried another bout of pathological lying. It didn’t work. We found out later he had been a roadie for a different famous band for many years so that’s ostensibly how he had an endless supply of insider knowledge.

I don't get the LGBTQ factor in music nowadays. Growing up in the 80's no-one seemed to care about that. George Michael and Boy George were huge and yet there was no big deal about their sexuality.

In fact they pretty much kept it under wraps when (esp with Boy George) you could have seen it from space. Still, nowadays the media is obsessed with LBGT topics so it is understandable.

I personally know Neal Young, and he told me that Sedan Delivery was his favorite song. I have also golfed with him a few times.

Dr. Todd is a very harsh on Tegan and Sara's music! As a heterosexual man I do like lots of their songs!

I agree - the criticism he is levelling at their music (basic lyrics, repetitive, simple melodies etc) could also be levelled at a legendary group like the Ramones

While the band had a large female LGBTQ following, you rightly point out that this is not enough to sustain a successful career. Their audience is huge and extends way beyond that group. The doc highlights their connection to LGBTQ fans to set the stage for the catfishing scheme and to establish the reason why some fans are so fiercely dedicated. But they are massively popular, Juno award winning artists. You're extremely off base with your assessment of their music.
@sweetvictory5643Ай бұрын
It's not about their music, it's about crazed fans: one of them pretended to be the singer, others needed to keep an intimate correspondence with her. It's about fan's mentality, not the musicians talent...
@CristyReactsАй бұрын
@@sweetvictory5643 Yeah, I know. I am addressing the fairly long portion of this video where Dr. Grande gives his opinion on their talent, which seems irrelevant
@sweetvictory5643Ай бұрын
@@CristyReacts Well, a video of his lasts a certain amount of time, he gets prepared and he's flawed like we all. I don't expect of him to be perfect... I wouldn't bother to do what he does, but he does it every day and for that he deserves a medal.
