Indian Country Today's daily newscast
On the Thursday edition of the ICT Newscast, a Louis Vuitton fashion show in France is getting mixed reactions online. A media professor is campaigning against the practice of using native names and imagery to sell products. and we meet an Ojibwe woman being honored for her work
A new lawsuit has been filed concerning tragic events. Cambria Harris has filed a human rights complaint against Manitoba’s progressive party for ads they made denying the search of a landfill where her mother's remains potentially lie. Morgan Harris' remains are thought to be in the Prairie Green Landfill, along with the remains of Mercedes Myren, who are both citizens of the Long Plain First Nation.
A new arctic report card shows that rising sea levels have changed a type of permafrost surrounding the arctic ocean. Terrestrial permafrost, which is defined as earth material that remains below zero degrees Celsius has changed to subsea permafrost. This resulted in the usual average annual air temperatures increasing from negative 20 degrees up to negative two degrees Celsius.
Seven tribal representatives have joined the executive committee and board of the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association. Established in 1998, AINTA focuses on advancing cultural heritage tourism in native nations and communities throughout the united states.
In a unique collaboration, Starbucks is showcasing Southeast Alaska native culture on its newest merchandise. Tlingit and Aleut illustrator, Alison Bremner has crafted culturally inspired designs on Starbucks cups that bring a touch of Alaska Native art to coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
The 2023 primetime Emmy awards were handed out over the weekend. One film with Indigenous people in front and behind the screen took home some hardware. "Prey" which is the prequel to the film Predator was nominated for six Emmys and won in the category of "outstanding sound editing for a limited or anthology series."
What exactly does it mean to be Native American? Indigenous identity is something that youth deal with every day. In Nebraska, two students talk about cultural connections and growing up in a city. This is a project of Lincoln Public Schools.
In France, a luxury brand is fresh off its latest fashion show, but within hours, it received some mixed reactions because of its portrayal of indigenous cultures. Louis Vuitton featured Native-inspired fashion.
it isn't just fashion designers who get called out for using native names and imagery to sell products, and that doesn't sit well with media professor Gary Rhodes. He's been campaigning against the practice for years-most recently, in an essay in The Washington Post. Rhodes specifically targets the Jeep Cherokee.
An Ojibwe woman is being honored for her work. Natasha Kingbird is one of four winners for the Virginia McKnight Binger Unsung Hero Awards.

It bothered me for decades that US weapon manufacturers sell a product line of “Tomahawk” missiles the American government buys and resells to clients. Very disturbing and it should be outlawed as Native American culture and history are stereotyped through the association.

How do you steal something that is not owned? Artists are not allowed to be inspired by others, or nature or music etc? Kinda ridiculous 😢

#ReleaseLeonardPeltier "Historically speaking, we went from being Indians to pagans to savages to hostiles to militants to activists to Native Americans. Its five hundred years later and they still cant see us. We are still invisible. We’re not Indians and we’re not Native Americans. We’re older than both concepts. We’re the people, we’re the human beings. I'm just a human being trying to make it in a world that is very rapidly losing its understanding of being human. We're all human beings and we all have feelings. And we all live in this industrial meat grinder where we don't really understand love anymore. The great lie is that it is civilization. It's not civilized. It has been literally the most blood thirsty brutalizing system ever imposed upon this planet. That is not civilization. That's the great lie, is that it represents civilization. Protect your spirit, because you are in the place where spirits get eaten. It’s like there is this predator energy on this planet, and this predator energy feeds on the essence of the spirit. I think we live in an industrial dimensional reality where we're programmed to believe what we're told. We're programmed to believe them. We're programmed to believe what that ruling class wants us to believe. Believing isn't thinking, but we've been programmed to believe that believing is thinking. To use our intelligence to think means we're keeping the energy active, we're thinking, we're really using the power of our intelligence in a thinking way. But when we've been programmed to believe, we're no longer thinking, because energy flows. When we're believing, we're not really thinking, because the belief has walls: "This is what I believe." So what I believe is like a box, and we're taking the energy of our thinking and putting into a box of beliefs, pretending that we're thinking. But we're really stifling our own energy. We create these mental stresses and frustrations, because we're blocking our spirit, so to speak. When I go around in America and I see the bulk of the white people, they do not feel oppressed; they feel powerless... and we understand the psychological genocide that they have already inflicted upon their own people. Because you look at it, you know, and there's basically one set of rules that protect that industrial ruling class. That's what the governments do, that's what the religions do. They protect the interests of that industrial ruling class. All human beings are descendants of tribal people who were spiritually alive, intimately in love with the natural world, children of Mother Earth. When we were tribal people, we knew who we were, we knew where we were, and we knew our purpose. This sacred perception of reality remains alive and well in our genetic memory. We carry it inside of us, usually in a dusty box in the mind's attic, but it is accessible. Our bones, flesh and blood are made up of the metals, liquids and minerals of the earth and everything on this planet is made up of the same things. As humans we have being, so everything on the earth does too in our culture, because we are made of the same thing. The thing is, it has to do with heart - we have to understand what hearts are for before we can get back to heaven or paradise or the power in our minds. No matter what they ever do to us, we must always act for the love of our people and the earth. We must not react out of hatred against those who have no sense. As human beings it is time to take responsibility for the power of our Intelligence and use the power of our intelligence to think coherently This isn't about whether we can or we can't This is about whether we will or we won't. We must go beyond the arrogance of human rights. We must go beyond the ignorance of civil rights. We must step into the reality of natural rights because all of the natural world has a right to existence and we are only a small part of it. There can be no trade-off. As human beings how we use our intelligence to perceive reality dictates how we will use the power of our intelligence. We have power... Our power isn’t in a political system, or a religious system, or in an economic system, or in a military system; these are authoritarian systems... they have power... but it’s not reality. The power of our intelligence, individually or collectively IS the power; this is the power that any industrial ruling class truly fears: clear coherent human beings. Every human being is a raindrop. And when enough of the raindrops become clear and coherent they then become the power of the storm. Sometimes when it rains, it's not that simple, when the sky has reasons to cry. In the society of illusion, reality must manifest itself. The story songs of Joel Rafael are that manifestation... the essence of minstrel." John Trudell

People of this world need to come together, what better way is there to show solidarity and support for each other. If you wear clothes or use names common in another culture, it is not because the person wants to degrade the culture and destroy it. People have always copied other people that they admire since the beginning of the ages, how else can someone really learn about others if they don’t share who they are and what they believe, and yes that means people will adopt your clothing style and your names.

Mutual respect? When will ‘getting along’ be fashionable. I don’t judge. I question. Will all the tribes of the world ever get along? Who will cross over? Hmmm, lol, maybe this incredible fashion will go down in History as an ‘homage’ to the First People’s.🇨🇦Prairie Métis on my own farm wearing a plaid Scottish design shirt. 😊

I don’t get it what’s wrong with a rocket going to the moon? Why do you feel the need to stop progress?
@heatherkaye8653
@heatherkaye8653 8 ай бұрын
@lada3264 It's not a matter of having the rocket go to the moon, it was the fact that they wanted to put dead human remains on the moon. If we've learned anything about our time here on this Earth, we know that humans are really great at trashing things up. Many don't believe it's a good thing to start trashing up the moon too.
