Fully agree that Indycar needs to grow beyond the US. As an Indianapolis native ive followed Indycar my whole life and typically Indycar's success gets measured against Nascar. The one place Nascar knee-caps itself is its reluctance to embrace an overseas market. In this way, Indycar has a far higher success ceiling than Nascar would ever allow itself to have simply by being a world sport rather than a national sport. It'd be fantastic to see races in South America and Australia again That said, there's still a few other key things Indycar desperately needs. First and foremost, clean up that damn schedule. Sometimes you get a race on Saturday followed by a race on Sunday, sometimes you go an entire month with no races at all. For a lot of fans (especially incoming fans who aren't used to it) it's just too hard to follow the schedule. Second, desperately need large ovals. Nothing wrong with road courses, street courses or small ovals but you need a healthy balance and the lack of large ovals leaves a massive gap in that balance. I would love to see Pocono and Michigan added
@brianeast11 Жыл бұрын
You'll get a stack of comments stating that Michigan and Pocono are far too dangerous. Which is a shame, because the standard of racing on those size ovals is amazing. Races in Mexico and Argentina initially I feel would benefit IndyCar greatly, with potentially expanding later on to having a race in Japan and Australia again.
@thelaborpeasant Жыл бұрын
@brianeast9081 Absolutely. Open wheel racing on those large ovals is some of the best and most exciting racing in motorsports. Some say it's too dangerous but honestly I don't see any reason Michigan or Pocono would be any more dangerous than Indy. The main issue for me is Indy gets a month of prep, practice and testing while last time Indycar went to Pocono they didn't even qualify. They just ran the race cold turkey and acted shocked when it had terrible consequences. That's the danger factor in my opinion. If you have adequate time to practice and prepare there's zero reason those tracks should be any more dangerous. Also that's a great shout out for Japan, that had completely slipped my mind but Japan would be amazing as well

The main issue with Indycar and it's size is total non-existence of marketing. You get some good stuff (Content/Media day, Indy 500 weeks) but other than that it is very easy to forget that there is a race on a weekend, which is a MASSIVE problem if you want to grow the sport.

Indy Car needs more engine manufacturing to enter. I also think more chassis would be great along with a base rolling chassis with teams investing in wind tunnel testing to reduce drag while making the chassis more tuneable. Set the parameters the teams will need to stick to. Refueling is a must, I didn't like the move to take refueling away in F1. I like the limited push-to-pass, drag reduction on road courses would be great too.

If I were in charge of IndyCar the first thing I would do is bring back the 500-mile triple crown, and then market the shit out of it. Schedule the 500s on the three big holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day), and then have two or three races after the third 500 to decide the championship. Market the first few events as "The race to Indy," then have "The Race to (let's say Michigan)" followed by "The Race to Pocono" and finally "The Race to the Championship." Keep hyping it up on TV all year, and make damned sure all three 500s are on network TV (put some lights up at Michigan and run it on Sunday evening of the July 4 weekend so you don't compete with the NASCAR race on Saturday), and run Pocono at 1 PM so it'll be over before the Southern 500 starts (anybody wanna run the Labor Day Double Duty????). By the time football is starting, folks will be saying "Man, I wanna tune into Laguna Seca, Portland, and Nashville to see who's going to take this trophy home!"

@Ramtamtama Жыл бұрын
I hope you aren't proposing a points reset for the final 3 rounds. Indy and Gateway are 500 mile races as is, but Iowa and Milwaukee and scheduled as 2*250s. If one of the 2 were made into a single 500 mile race then you could have a triple crown, albeit not the traditional one. Failing that you could have Indy, Rafaela, and Lausitz and brand it as the "International Triple Crown"
@Quintinohthree Жыл бұрын
@@Ramtamtama Gateway is 325 miles and never 500 miles. Iowa is 2x223.5 miles and never added up to 500 miles, Milwaukee's distances haven't been anounced but no singular Milwaukee rwve has ever been longer than 250 miles, so it's unlikely to add up to 500 miles. Whatever the case may be, it's not as simple as designating two more existing races as part of the triple crown.
@billmartin1663 Жыл бұрын
You had me until you got to, "network TV." What is "network TV" anymore? With streaming, "network TV" isn't as meaningful as it once was. I suspect restricting the big races to "network TV" would automatically exclude over half of the U.S. viewing audience. With the exception of NBC (with Roku), are any of the former "Big 3" networks even available to the half of the country that are streamers? The fragmentation of television makes this a much harder task to accomplish. There IS no universal media outlet anymore.
@don31200011 ай бұрын
@@Ramtamtama No, not a reset. Just get folks psyched up enough that they're chomping at the bit to see who wins. I'm waffling on the triple crown races being double points or same as every other race, but no playoffs or chase for the championship-type gimmicks. BTW, Gateway is 500k not 500 miles! During the COVID season when they ran a double-header, they ran two, 250 mile races and called the weekend the Bommarito AG 500, but as a single-race it's always been in the 300-mile/500k range.

And as you said very well in the video the World Cup 14 and the Olympics 16, It only hindered the category from staying here because the São Paulo 300 was a success every year, Even so, there are some rumors about a possible return, at the moment we have F1 and FE in São Paulo and Wec in 2024, And with Pietro Fittipaldi racing for Rahal #30. I hope we can see Indy back in South America, Be here at "TERRAS TUPINIQUINS BRASILEIRAS" Or also in Argentina to throw La Fiesta for Augustin, I hope that Roger Penske can be bolder and that our politicians here can help us, anyway, congratulations on the content👏🏻.

One area I disagree with the general attitude about is the matter of international expansion. I'm not saying IndyCar should reject the idea of an international race if a promoter comes by and plonks down enough money to guarantee IndyCar will break even(at worst) if the event fails, but it shouldn't be a major focus. IndyCar is, as much as it pains me to say, a domestic series first and foremost, more akin to Super Formula than Formula One. Domestic stability and growth needs to be the first priority over all else. Once you have a stable domestic base, THEN You can try to grow some more international interest.
@mikeynanez3038 Жыл бұрын
As a long time fan of IndyCar I have to say that both videos are very well done and I agree with a lot what’s being said. I couldn’t think of a better person to run the sport than Roger Penske. This guy lives, breaths, sweats, and bleeds Motorsport. He has his hand in multiple series and has always done so. Indycar, prototypes, Aussie Supercars, CanAm, NASCAR, etc. He not only has a financial interest in the series, but a genuine passion for it. I’ve been rewatching Indycar/Cart seasons going back to 1990, currently midway through the 1999 season. It is absolutely amazing watching these seasons as someone who missed it then due to my age (I’m 33) and was sucked into NASCAR. The split in 1996 goes without saying the worst thing that could happen. There was so much growth, buzz, and viewership around the world. So much so that even F1 was getting nervous. 93 and Mansell mania really put the trajectory of the sport into high gear. Some of the things IndyCar needs to work on to get back to that level of popularity. #1 going to circuits that had some of the best races. As mentioned in your first video there isn’t a large oval outside of the 500. CART races at Michigan and Autoclub (Cali) were some of the best. I understand there is a lot of concern for safety and rightfully so, but instead of just ignoring the concern the series should look to make the upgrades to race there again. Texas wasn’t nearly as exciting as the two I named but it’s was better than nothing. #2 international or races outside the US. There is a large number of drivers from outside the boarders of the US. I think there needs to be a race in Mexico and Canada. Ideally a race in Brazil and Argentina would be great as well. But with that being said a lot of the issues that led to the split were caused by increasing cost. The race in Surfers Paradise was always epic, but extremely expensive. If you grew the sport in the NA and SA continents you would see massive returns. #3 variety in chassis and engine supply. If you look at the 98 season you had power being supplied from Ford,Honda,Mercedes, and Toyota. Right now with only Chevy and Honda there is a lack of options and huge strain on those 2 brands. Ford going to supply the Red Bull F1 team is a huge missed opportunity. There are others that may be interested. Chassis are also extremely dated as mentioned in video one. Dallara is a great organization and has been very well for IndyCar for a long time. Again looking at the 90s you have Lola, Reynard, Penske, Swift, and Eagle in the series. I think even one more option would spice up the show. Again this can lead to added cost, but as long as tire supply stays at a single make it shouldn’t become too expensive in racing terms. #4 consistent television and media presence. IndyCar missed the boat on 2020 like F1 with DTS series. As much as older fans (including myself at times) may not agree with DTS the influx of new fans and interest cannot be overlooked. Over the last say 20 years IndyCar has jumped from tv provider to tv provider. Hopefully that becomes more stable moving forward. Oh and a IndyCar video game would have been nice, thanks Motorsport Games. This is a lot of text and most won’t make it this far. I just want the sport I love to get back to former glory. In the US nascar is doing everything in its power to become the next series to split. Numbers are dropping and NOW is the time to grab up that viewership.

It’s spec racing now with 4 fenders, a windshield, and one tire manufacturer. It used to be ground effects, active suspensions, active diffusion, and tire competition. In 1991, Michael Andretti’s qualifying time at Long Beach was equal to the 2023 qualifying time. Indycar was entering F1 territory. The sponsors loved the product and so did TV. I love nascar, but i dont enjoy the playoffs and i wish they wouldnt just throw cautions and everything willy nilly. After all whats most importantly is the race itself, not the total season. So i think if it could position itself to find all the idiots like myself in the greenville Spartanburg area who love racing, and market itself as pure like nascar used to be, indycar could find some major success. That would also allow it to maybe throw some bigger ovals back in, which would be kinda cool since were losing texas.

As a longtime fan, I can say that a good part of the reason why the earlier effort in Brazil didn't take was because teams found it too expensive, given their budgets: This is problem #1 that has to be addressed. The second, as you mentioned in the previous video, is trying to keep some degree of balance between road/street & ovals (especially big ones). Go too far towards the former and the "F1 wannabe" label will be thrown about by all of the series' detractors again.
@brianeast11 Жыл бұрын
IMO the perfect split between ovals and road/street courses is 50/50. I don't want to see IndyCar become another generic road-course open wheel series, and also don't want to see it become a completely oval series either.

Coming from someone that has just recently started following the scene as a casual viewer, IndyCar does have that potential to reach that large audience. Take it from me, as someone who lives halfway across the world and would stay up all night to watch the Indy 500. Truly, it has a shot.

All you need to do is compare Roger to the Nascar leadership to see the gap between them. Sure, Nascar may be full of stupid gimmicks making it more wrestling on wheels than racing and it feels like Phelps and Kennedy make decisions with absolutely no regard for the wants of the drivers or fans. But at least they're trying to shake it up and try new things to see if they catch on. Penske's content to let his series die a slow death so long as he gets to laugh it up with his corporate buddies in the luxury boxes.

I started watching in the late 80s. I've been there through the Golden years. When I started to stop watching was when it became the spec series it is today. There's almost zero difference between the cars. They veil it behind tiny differences. But it makes the races boring. Having 675 lead changes isn't exciting, that's NASCAR. I want heroes and villains. I want a handful of teams to be above the rest, and see that balance shift year after year, season over season. It's just for some reason not as engaging with 16 different winners every year.

I have never understood why Indy Car has not tried harder to go back to COTA! Maybe the first race was short on attendance but to not race on a premier track that totally assure racer safety and dedicated facility is difficult to understand. Street races are second class to any dedicated race facility. What’s up? Not having a yearly race at COTA leaves this true fan and supporter of Indy Car suspicious that racing is not truly Indy Car’s priority … it’s once again politics and money!

only thing indycar needs is new chassis ..new engine manufacture ..International races (toronto doesnt really count) if they did those three things Indycars popularity would sky rocket.

I don't buy it. First, in this "competitive" series, which Penske or Ganassi driver will win the championship this season? (hey, when Pagenaud can become a season and Indy champ, it's as much about "the car" as it is anywhere else) The sooner the series stops trying to justify itself by repeating "great racing" that is objectively beaten by F2, the better. As to car count, does it matter when a full third of the grid is no-hopers, like the teams such as Foyt, Junkos and Schenk and their drivers? The reason that's such a priority is to make sure Penske's 500 had the requisite 33 starters, not to create anything of quality over a season. Indycar needs to stop drinking its own kool-aid for starters. It's not half as "competitive" as it thinks, nor does it produce truly "great racing" (name me a great, memorable race in the last few seasons). It also needs to stop believing the mythical third mfr is coming, and create contingencies for when there's not two. They need to truly figure out their drivetrain questions and not develop hybrid systems that they still haven't even sorted out the implementation of in the rules; talk about developing solutions for which there were no questions. They need to stop going to horrible downtown street circuits like Detroit and Nashville, but considering Nashville is now thought of as a jewel of a street circuit in contrast to F1's Miami and LV circuits, that's never going to happen. And until the series can figure itself out domestically, international expansions won't work. That's another CART move. Indycar needs a new, lightweight, state of the art car that isn't ten years old at the time of its launch much less a chassis eligible for historic races as it stands now. It needs to break out of the Mid-west Rust Belt, to which it's as much a regional series as NASCAR is, and it needs some people who understand marketing; I think Indycar's brass were the only fools who believed that Motorsports Games wouldn't turn out a decent product or one at all. Additionally to that end, Indycar has zero internet presence and its website is circa 2002, which is emblematic of where the entire series still resides. I've followed the series since 1980 and was around for the split. If I didn't know any better, I'd have to say that Penske is part of the problem. He was never a leader, he followed where the series went and only ever truly cared about the 500. He supported yes-men CEOs in CART and he's got another of that feckless mold in Miles. I vote no confidence, as I have for 30 years. They need new management that will get wins, not scrapped engines and hybrids all within the down is six months, for which the series itself shows there's no use.

Last year's Texas race was truly great and memorable
@f1jones544 Жыл бұрын
@@oldred9122 ironically, I think that was a Saturday night race that I missed because there was no marketing lead up (to that end, I know when NASCAR and IMSA races are happening because those series are pushed to my phone's news feed even though I don't follow or read the stories). Plus, it was at another oval producing half the attendance of a regular season NBA game, or< 20% of any road course weekend. That's another problem; we're told the series needs more ovals that I think confuses the average new viewer, but no one shows up to them. A different issue that I think the series has that I didn't mention above is all the part time sponsors and more importantly, liveries. There is no identity in the series. I can still remember and identify the liveries from the 80s and 90s but can barely tell you the colors of anyone's cars these days. They're are no iconic or even holistic liveries aside from DHL. You can't turn on the TV and know who's driving what for the first 20 laps, and the commentators never seem help. It's like when low rent Tyrrell would slap stickers from a local sandwich shop onto their cars in the early 80's, except it's the whole Indycar grid and on live TV. It's all so amateurish when Palou's car is blue in one race, blue and orange in the next and green in another. Fans identity sports teams and drivers by their colors. Randomization literally isn't a good look and doesn't give the marketers much to work with under the best of conditions either. What does s the champ's car look like this year? Couldn't tell you.

Having multiple races overseas is just repeating the mistakes that killed CART off. IndyCar needs to focus on the US. The sponsors pay money to advertise their brand in the US at US venues. The visits to Canada have been a tradition going back decades, thats where the travels should end. They need to create a newer car, and honestly they need to focus on making Indy Lights a better feeder series. Another problem with Indycar is that they have too many older drivers in the series. They need more young talent, that are genuinely ready to compete come in, and not make it look like some kind of retirement series. The real smart thing Indycar should do is partner with IMSA to have multiple race weekends - make it a value show for all the fans.

In the previous video you expressed where having only one engine manufacturer, thus making IndyCar a spec series, might not be the best thing. In my humble opinion, I beg to differ. You said yourself that the biggest appeal of IndyCar is its close racing. Formula One has very few spec parts, and thus very few close races for the win. The most exciting races of a typical F1 weekend are the F2, F3, and Porsche Supercup races (all spec series). I wonder if landing an affordable spec engine package might actually highlight IndyCars biggest asset (its drivers), not to mention bring costs down. Thanks for the wonderfully informative video👍

Bring Indy to the world again! I absolutely loved Twin Ring Motegi and Danicas win, I absolutely loved the races in Germany so much, but unfortunately there was the sad accident with Zanardi. I watch the two German races all the time, but always skip the part where Alex looses his legs. The same like I watch the 1973 500 all the time, but skip over Swede Savage burning alive. It’s a shame he survived so long after the accident but died many weeks later in the hospital..

Indycar would profit greatly from heading back to Brazil, going to Argentina, a race in Mexico AND back to Twin Ring Motegi... Why Japan? Oh idk probably because one of their only 2 engine manufacturers have made hints at leaving the series... If you think going to Japan wouldn't be huge for Honda and actually kind of place a little pressure on them to stay, you don't know much about Japanese automotive car companies...

The hybrid drivetrain is a wasteful distraction from the bigger issues. Nobody cares whether the cars are hybrid are not -- other than (maybe) Honda and some in the media. If it doesn't make the racing better (and it can't), it's just a high-risk, high-cost boondoggle. The series would be better served to modernize the cars. Fans don't see hybrid. But they see bodywork. And the bodywork is all the same, all the time, for far too long. Open the bodywork to allow some aerodynamic (and styling) differentiation and the racing might not be as good, but the viewer would be stimulated by the differences.

IndyCar has an identity crisis. Formula 1 is high glamour and high tech. They have tons of fans who aren't race fans but love the "event " and the personalities. NASCAR, on the other hand, isn't high tech but it's high contact, highly competitive racing and steeped in southern and conservative culture. IndyCar's identity was obliterated by the split and it has only partially recovered. The IRL revolved around the 500 and ovals. CART was more balanced but road and street courses were predominant. In the meantime, tv ratings and major sponsors and manufacturers ended up splintering. Indycar is a fantastic series but it must transition from being in survival mode to embracing new chassis, engines, and non-US venues. F1 and NASCAR know who they are and who their fans are. Indycar has yet to figure this out.

As someone, who has attended the Indy 500 for 60 years, I must ask you Dylan: Have you ever attended an IndyCar race in person, let alone the Indy 500? Have you walked through Gasoline Alley? Do you understand the heritage of open wheel racing in America! (it does not begin with Carts!) The F1 idea of innovation is a shell game, no less dependent on manufacturers and a small group of iconoclastic teams. Yet none of those F1 teams feel comfortable racing on banked ovals. Case in point: the 2005 American Grand Prix at Indianapolis, where all of the 16 cars sporting Michelin tires failed to race one lap. Your UK-Continental view seems like a view through a spyglass from a distant land.

Indycar needs to get out of that North American sport mentality and look international. Most of its drivers are foreigners and local fans are not that weird about the native-born thing anymore. Check out that new Race Girl book, a great story about Indycar and quite dramatic. It even has Pato winning Long Beach and Indy.
