The jesus and mary chain have a new album comong out this year!

The thing about so many of these interviews with the Mary Chain or anyone from 30-40 years ago is the medias obession with themselves/itself... press / media folks asking a band what they think about the presses reaction to THEIR work.. like it REALLY matters what the press make of it... which of course it did.... (but doesn't anymore). Jim's response was the correct one. "Who cares?! We don't think about it". I hope that was true... i'm sure it was! I miss the music press .. a bit.. but also so glad it no longer wields the power it once did.

Richard Wilkins still epitomises the press psyche of the times you mention. He's awfully linear with questioning.

William's particularly eloquent in this interview, compared to some of the other ones I've heard with him

Saw them for the first time during this tour in my home of Sydney Australia. I always have this over most show off"s bragging about the bands, especially the larger type Indie/Alternative gigs they attended. I remember ruining this guy's showing off at a party. He,'d seen The Cure, Siouxie & Bsnshees, The Smiths and by 1990, Morrisey blah. blah blah. I would say deadpan ',Ive seen the Jesus and Mary Chain ' and people would either go quiet or yell out, you lucky so & so.

Automatic is possibly the Mary Chain's most aesthetically successful album. The songs are amazing and the quite deliberate stab at widescreen US-friendly anthemic rock is bang on the nose but never embarrassing. Much as I love Psychocandy and Barbed Wire Kisses especially, Automatic is a fucking brilliant, underrated record.

At that current moment Warner Bros. minds are being blown from hearing Automatic for the 1st time.
@WS-fw9jg2 жыл бұрын
Are you kidding? Why do you think the promo videos from around that time look so shabby??? Warners were disappointed by the final result and hated the fact that the Reids had turned down a number of high profile producers to basically do the LP themselves. The Automatic LP sold very badly in the UK and Ireland, their biggest markets. Old fans didn't like that drum machine. Both singles sank without a trace. Automatic sort of did OK in continental Europe, better than expected, and that more or less saved their contract. In the US they did well in the modern rock charts but were never ever close to cross over and join the superleague. Around1987-88 the Bunnymen were splitting up and Warners thought they had found the ideal replacement in JAMC: a post punk band with catchy tunes, weird charisma, street cred and good reviews that could soon turn into their British REM-like massive selling alternative act. By 1990 it was clear they'd remain a minor league band and Warners had pretty much given up on them, spending as little money as possible promoting them.

I like Automantic, but I think everyone including the brothers agree that Psychocandy is their best. As Jack Black says in the movie, Psytchocandy takes over after echo and the bunnymen's Ocean Rain.

@@WS-fw9jg Great post. A lot of stuff in that that i never knew. I think the fact that they were so bad at interviews certainly didnae help the situation. I don`t think i`ve seen more insular rock stars. But the proof is in the pudding so to speak. Honey`s Dead(1992) was underrated and a lot of big artists were certainly influenced by them, Billy Corgan and Trent Reznor- and yet they remain somewhat of an enigma.

@@jimmypopt.v.3037honeys dead is criminally underrated. No one ever mentions that one as far as Jamc’s best work but it’s always been my favorite. Not only that but honeys dead was a lot different from anything they’ve done. Awesome production and mastering too

Very true! Apart from Stoned and Dethroned though. It's an abortion of an album and I still hold it against them.

@@Mrpublicimagelimited stoned and dethroned is a great album. It’s a lot different from their previous stuff but the songs are still great and super catchy as always. These guys are incredible songwriters, still doing it to this day. Honeys dead and darklands are my two favorites, but all of their albums are great. They can do no wrong in my opinion

I'm an Aussie and remember this well. From my fading memory, Richard Wilkins did not play this interview in full, and when it was shown, it was 2 am in the morning. Richard Wilkins At that time, ran Australian MTV and therefore Australian artists, kissed his backside to get a break into the lucrative US market. Believe it or not, by 1991, you still couldn't make enough money in the very small Australian market. E.g. INXS had to break into the US market by 1985 as they were by far Australia's biggest band in 1984 but only made about $US120 000 per year even with a No..1 album that sat in The Top 10 charts for a year. WARNING: - He was warned about the Bros Read. The UK so called Alternative press told Wilkins that they're notoriously difficult to interview E.g. you praise their latest album, AND in turn, the Reid Bros don't care; you go high, they go low, you try & pretend you 'really' know them and guaranteed, they will troll you.
