When storing sugar or salt for a very long time just add saltine crackers in with it to absorb the moisture. It is for this reason I get C & H sugar. They really dry their sugar and you get more sugar per bag than the higher moisture content in others. They save on the weight that they sell you. Read the label. :-)

I have local honey that is almost 20 years old. A farm was going out of business and had a sale. Had 5 glass containers filled. 2 somehow were placed on shelf in basement and forgotten about until we moved and was found. A little crystallized but a little heat does the trick.

Just bought some more corn starch today! I still have about a cup of vanilla extract that I bought in Mexico over 30 years ago and it is still good. Soy sauce lasts forever but only buy it in a glass jar so you can be sure it was fermented. Pure maple syrup lasts forever. After opening it might grow some fungus on the top but just remove it; heat up the remaining syrup to a boil and you're good. I've got everything you mentioned!

Funny the sugar and salt label .Years ago I worked with someone that made the best Key Lime Pie in the world . Divine is the only way to describe it. I was bragging on this pie for years . A few years ago I ordered one for Thanksgiving and took it to my daughters where we all go every year. Bragged about the pie and no one ate more than a nibble. You guessed it. She had used salt instead of sugar. She stored sugar and salt in 5 gallon buckets. I got home and she gave everyone who purchased a Key Lime pie another Pie and a Free Pumpkin Cheese Cake. The pumpkin Cheese cake was the best cheese cake I've ever eaten , but I kept that to myself. Good list Leisa.

I have made vinegar from my pear peelings and cores for the last 2 years. It is very easy to do. This year I made blackberry and blueberry also from berries I juiced in my steam pot. I got an infestation of fruit flys from bananas from my Walmart pickup last week and read that sitting jars with cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap would trap them. I sit 3 jars out using a couple of spoonfuls of the blackberry vinegar and overnight I caught every fruit fly around about 20 of them. I use the pear vinegar as a hair rince for me and also my dog because he is prone to yeast infections on his skin. Coco powder is a must have in my house of chocoholics . It will also last forever.

@@pinschrunner my dog was adopted 3 years ago after being taken in and nursed by my local vet. He had been brought in 3 months earlier by a good samaritan that found him on side of the road after being either hit by one or thrown out of a car . He had a severely busted pelvis and horribly matted hair that was so bad it had caused severe skin infections. The vet treats all animals brought in whether they have an owner or not. He has severe allergies even to grass. He has not had any shots since I brought him home. He is on an all natural food with no grain no corn and no gmo ingredients. It's just salmon and green peas. It is what he tolerates best. He is given diatomaceous earth for intestinal worms and also dusted with it during flea season. He is bathed with all natural dog soap made locally with baking soda and other soothing oils and all natural ingredients. He is then rinsed with the homemade vinegar. I have taken all chemicals out of everything he gets and have since I got him. Other than a limp and sensitive skin he has no other problems besides the cats when they get tired of him washing their faces every time they come in to eat. I even have to watch what type material blanket he sleeps on . Thank you for the suggestions. God bless!

Best to get honey in containers that are not air permeable. Go with glass or honey in a tin. I was buying the big container at Costco but noticed over time that the plastic container would indent as air left through the plastic (like you were vacuum sealing it and sucking the air out).

I also buy the Costco honey in plastic, but when I bring it home, I repackage into pint canning jars. I figured if it started to crystalize, it would be a whole lot easier to stand the glass in a saucepan of warm/hot water to reconstitute, than if it was in the plastic. In practice though, the honey never lasts long enough to crystalize! 😉

It is impossible to breed bacteria in honey so it can be used to treat open wounds. Make sure the wound is clean with boiled water if you don't have any antiseptic, then smooth a layer of honey covering the entire wound and the surrounding skin, then bandage with (if possible) sterile bandages. If you don't have sterile bandages, you can make your own by boiling any cotton cloth in water and drying it in an oven or on a hot surface such as the top of a wood burning stove. Honey has complex antibacterial properties which can stop infection from forming or to combat existing infection. It has even been used in cases of necrotising faciitis. Dressings are usually left on two to three days, but may be left longer.
@jumpoffa5011
@jumpoffa5011 4 жыл бұрын
Whereas you are correct in that Honey makes it impossible to breed bacteria. This is due to the high sugar content. However, this doesn't mean that there isn't any bacteria in the honey itself. This is why Honey is often "pasteurized" to kill any bacterium and/or spore "seed" that may be present in the Honey. Cast in point C. Botulinum, not to mention various forms of Yeast that is also found in Honey. It is for this reason that it is not recommended to give honey to children under the age of three.

@@snowysnowyriver It isn't recommended by any Pediatrician to give honey to a small child. Please look it up. Since I have your attention can you tell us how commercial honey is put out there for the public? I have noticed that some honey has a higher water content. Can you shed some light on the matter? :-)
@snowysnowyriver
@snowysnowyriver 4 жыл бұрын
@@jumpoffa5011 We don't have anything to do with commercial honey production. Our hives are kept for our own use these days, and any extra is given away as gifts. All honey has some water in it naturally, and the bees dry the honey out as they store it in the honeycomb. If water is being added commercially then that must make for a watery honey and I can't see the logic of it because a very watery honey results in fermentation and renders the honey practically useless. As for the question of whether honey is suitable or not for babies, I prefer to rely on 300 years of history and not one child sick from consuming the honey from our hives in all that time.

I’ve heard from Alaska Prepper about storing dried beans, lentils, (not sugar or salt) in 2 liter pop bottles with a 50 cc O2 absorber. Cheap storage option.
@debrawhited3035
@debrawhited3035 4 жыл бұрын
Why not sugar or salt? I've done it for many years with no problems. I used to drink a lot of "fruit juice" (Juicy Juice) until I figured out it was sugar water with a little bit of juice. However, I have made good use of the bottles. The mouth is larger than 2 liter pop bottles, making it easier to store rice, beans, lentils and some smaller pastas, like penne and rigatoni.

Coffee beans and ground actually go rancid after a few years. They have oil like other oils they go bad with time. Now how long? depends. But the intstant freeze dried coffee will not go rancid. It may be less yummy over time so storing freeze dried instant is your best bet. Gorund and beans past one year on the best by date.

Vinegar - either type, doesn't cure poison ivy, it just helps with the itching. My mother had poison ivy so badly from clearing land when I was a very young child, that every summer she had a recurring case. Supposidly that doesn't happen, but she was apparently very allergic to it from that episode so the wind seemed to blow it on her or something like that. She would get it over most of her body. She would put the vinegar on herself and smell like vinegar my whole childhood. Scents bring back memories lol

AHHH, there's your kitchen - progress? This was a very good video. Another prepper looked at depression food recipe book and out of all of the meals, sugar and salt were in more than anything else. He did it for an Italian, so lots of tomatoes. And Pasta. Some foods do not store but are very good for your health, greens for instance and you can easily plant them in the kitchen window - or bath where they get the humidity. Even I can rarely kill the greens :-) This was excellent 'food for thought' a pun I hope -- all of the bouillon and corn things are off my list, but I make my own bone(chicken) and mushroom broth and I cook everything with one or both of them. I have chickens and a new incubator - so they are my forever food :-). eggs are a complete food to my body and you can make so many things with them. I wish I knew how to keep Lipton tea for ever. I drink it for health reasons and because I am a Southern girl.

You suggest putting the bouillon cubes into mylar bags and sealing them. Of course that sounds wonderful, but are you supposed to reseal it every time you take one out? Or do you just mean this is for a long time down the road when you open the bag and will be using many of them?

INSTANT coffee...OK, so it lasts forever...but who would want to drink it? Blech! 😉 I am a tea drinker anyway, and though I can't say it would last forever, it lasts for years when using the "DDC" method. Kind of like how we use the ancient can of some spice we only use once a year, and it's still good. McCormick once did a magazine ad about how to tell how old your spices are - it was shocking! I am very happy to say I have all of the listed things in my storage. Might get more lentils now, though. Don't dry beans store long term? I appreciate the tips about what to use and not use oxygen absorbers with.
