The son of a career Naval Officer, Walter Bryan Jackson earned the Eagle Scout Award in 1999 while in the 10th grade, and participated in the JROTC program throughout his high school years. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with the Class of 2005.
On September 27, 2006, then 2nd Lt. Jackson and his unit were attempting to recover a disabled vehicle along the road in what was then the deadliest province in Iraq. As his unit worked on the disabled vehicle, they came under severe machine gun fire from insurgent forces.
The commander and first sergeant were hit almost immediately. Seeing this, Jackson quickly crossed the road to the first sergeant's side and applied a pressure bandage to the wound. Within a minute of reaching the sergeant, Jackson himself was hit in the thigh and hand. He slumped over, but continued to return suppressive fire while himself and others evacuated the wounded.
For his actions Walter Bryan Jackson would be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, an award second only to the Medal of Honor.
