You'd be surprised by the number of people I've seen in person and others posting on the web who refuse to buy and use BUIS. They say BUIS are obsolete and/or outdated and truly believe their optic is all they need. They laugh when presented with scenarios where BUIS are needed. Good video as always. Thanks brother, I could give two shits what those guys do with their own rifle. When you train enough and/or deploy you see first hand things occasionally fail. I would have never thought about ice forming on my optics/PEQ if I didn't didn't experience it first hand. Thankfully it was in training, lesson learned. How often will you have to result to BUIS, hopefully never... but sh-t happens, I'd rather have them then not, they weigh nothing.

That’s because the scenarios are just not applicable to most civilians. You’re not going to be fighting in a trench in Ukraine, you’re not going to be LRRP patrolling in SHTF (you have a day job still and have a family to protect), and they are next to useless in night scenarios. Be honest with yourself and understand the argument people are making before attacking it. If you think you are going to be fighting Chinese paratroopers in trenches in your backyard, good on you, but at least realize what a silly scenario that is before doing mental gymnastics to justify BUIS.

During my Army Infantry days everyone used the M-16a1, back in 1977. There were no optics of any kind. There was 4x power scope that was made to mount on that "carry handle." Made with a simple crosshair. One guy in the mortar mortar Platoon ordered one. It was very difficult to zero. It was a waste of money. Lot's of better options are available today. ACOG's, red-dot's, low power variable optics, laser emitters, infrared. Back in the day iron sights were all that was available and dependable. Only night vision was Startlight night vision. It was like carrying a concrete block on your M-16a1. Used an odd ball, special battery. Like I said a lot of things are vastly improved today. One of the better things is those blood clotting powders. Saved a lot of lives so far. I will not say there was much improvement when they switched from C-rations to MRE's. Nasty is still nasty.

This video makes me realize that in my time in the Marine Corps I haven't gotten much time practicing with iron sights. It seems unimportant but if we're expected to practice how we play there should be ranges or at least range time dedicated to swapping from optics to iron sights. Your video give guys like me who are still in topics to think and reflect about to better ourselves as warfighters

Yup, another neglected aspect is passive aiming thru NVGs. Most units don't even bother training or even discussing it. A peer on peer fight is not going to permit IR lasers flashing around. Going to take blood to change minds unfortunately.

💯. Made changes to my rifle before a class and forgot to locTite the optic in my hurry to get it zeroed (I know). When my optic rattle off in a drill, I tried to switch to my day laser but forgot the Bikini cover was on. I was too focused on setting the laser to the correct setting and timed out pressing the button wondering why it wouldn’t work. Switching to a backup laser when off isn’t fast. It requires dexterity and thought when it’s off. I put my buis back on after that and now make sure my laser is on. If you don’t agree with buis because you have a laser, you should be making sure it’s on and working before relaying on.

I was using an EOTech once and sighted in with stock fully extended. Went to the range and couldn't hit squat. After the range, I realized my stock was completely collapsed.

Good video. I did a little bit of off hand night/winter training at a range I knew I could go to. It was a good experience. And fog proof to your list of benefits with irons. Two main things I learned: It does not take much water for an AR rifle to seize up. Dropped it in the snow when I walked out, snow melted and froze up my hammer and safety. The second, breathing in cold weather fogged up my stuff really easy, and my eye pro.

An etched reticle and BUIS is the way. Solid advice, especially for all the guys that think backing up their primary optic with an angled red dot is a solution. What if battle damage or dead batteries that you no longer can get replacements for occurs, then what? Irons work 100% of the time and if you know how to use them, you'll never be out of the fight. There is a practical reason as well, as the customer, you may not like the included back up sights. Often they are the MagPul plastic MBUS which are not bad, but still fragile compared to steel. Or you have a make and model that you prefer more, like the Knight's BUIS Just like the Glock, even included back ups for most AR15s are the first thing to go So long as the rifle is worth your money, not including backup sights are at worst, an inconvenience As for different Zeros for different weight bullets, as The Great Paul Harrell says, often "There is not enough of a difference to make a difference"

I'd rather they cut that cost and I buy what I want. I'm paying good money for a good rifle. I simply DO NOT WANT some backup sights to factor into the cost at all. They're such a non issue.

The M4 sight is made by Matech - we are issued them in the Army. Might have gotten a few bad or worn out ones but I do not like them as they don't seem to hold the elevation setting very well.

I'm an old salty Marine sea dog from the mid 90's to the mid 2000's and I was a PMI. My entire time in we had the M-16A2 with fixed iron sights with Marines qualifying the KD course which as any Marine knows extends to 500 yards, with iron sights of which Marines did very well hitting a man sized target at that distance without magnification. Today, I have an LPVO, with a 12 o'clock RMR and BUIS. My front sight is fixed, only my rear is flip up.

I had a bad experience with a A2 front sight gas block with a magpul rear sight that made me a less discipled using irons, which led to interest in walking up onto targets, which led to interest in the ACSS reticle to mitigate the need for walking up or combine that. I hope to get an A2 rear sight without the carry handle to get more serious about shooting with irons. Also love support for trijicon because they are a good christian company.

LMT makes a quality A2 Rear Sight that omits the carry handle portion and still allows room for an EO Tech or Aimpoint for co-witnessing your sights

Another thing. If you don't have quick release of your primary and plan on and are able to use your backups through your optic glass, make sure you check the zero of your irons "though" your optic glass. It has been proven that the refraction from the glass can change your zero.

More of a case for the Primary Arms SLX line of prisms. Etched reticle can't be beat, tough to boot, & that ACSS reticle is all about business. Only need to run the illumination in low-light situations.

Good stuff. I really like 45 degree offset irons, they do feel natural as was stated. I don't like backing up tech with tech, also if one does not wish to use QD mounts or pay for them, just duct tape an allen/torx wrench to the buttstock.

The one is none and two is one rule applies to sights; a quick backup. I have had a small amount of mud come down from above and block the rear apature of a M16A1. Scary when you don't note it in the rain and find just enough mud to block that small hole as you raise your weapon. We didn't have a second or third sight option...and were forbidden to add a second if we had one. After leaving the Corps, I maintain at least two on serious social situation rifles. Great discussion.

Used Iron Sights all my life. Yes, optics have come a long way, but anything that requires batteries can quite on you. Not saying that will happen often, but it would be critical if it happened in a fight. And today's younger generation are optic dependent and seldom, if ever, train with iron sights. It is my belief that they should train heavily with iron sights due to the mentioned difficulty experienced by the author of this video with weather related issues. Fewer moving parts, fewer things to go wrong. 😏 On a personal note, at 74, after cataract surgery in both eyes, my distance vision is incredible, but I can't use optics. However, Iron Sights are perfect for my situation. So like in my experience over the years with iron sights, accurate shooting is as natural as shouldering a rifle. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth. 😐

My experience with the AR, you really want that large aperture for night time or low light use. And a tritium front sight. Pulling numbers out of my ass, I'd say the AR sight system reduces light hitting your eye by 40% with the big aperture and 70% with the small aperture. So a strong light is needed to use them in low light/dark. Lots of candela. Right now I like the Trigicon front sight the best. In the rain, the small aperture can clog with water. One more reason I love having a dual aperture rear. I was told to take a safety pin, put on your uniform, and use that to clear AR sights of mud, ice, snow. It works. The best irons, in my experience, are the AK irons because you can clear snow or mud from them quickly and if you have an "express sighting system" it allows excellent light transmission to your eyeball at night or in low light. XS Sights for the AK (tritium) are simply awesome.

Also, understand that irons ought to be sighted in without the optic mounted unless you plan to only use the irons in the event that a optic dies. If you sight in irons with the optic then remove the optic and use the irons, your zero will shift. At 100-150 yards I find it's acceptable for an emergency situation, but zero will DEFINITELY shift. Likewise, if you zero with the irons, then slap on a RDS, and tune it to the irons, you will still want to zero the optic. The zeros will be different.

Irons really benefit from you having a consistent eye placement. I use "nose to charging handle" on an AR. Extremely fast and consistent for me. I can consistently do sub 1-second ready-ups with the small aperture rear and get A-zone hits at 15 yards. But whatever you do, be consistent. And practice practice practice.

One of my rifles i have an acog on with a QD mount and my main fighting rifle is a red dot/3x magnifier combo and both rifles have flip up irons on them ... my red dot rifle cowitnesses the irons so i dont need a QD mount also the red dot has front and back clear flip up covers if dirty i can flip them up or take em off. As a marine vet myself we dont think that far off brother

Good info! I usually end up spending more time searching for BUIS I like than optics. I prefer the FSB and co-witnessing red dots on most of my ARs and am always 'fudding' with the rears. I like those 45 degree mounted BUIS for an LPVO rifle - doesn't get 'quicker' for go to.

I have had to switch to irons in a couple of competions. They are essential. also essential is having a way to get the optic out of the way. If your optic is permently mounted without a quick release and you just flip up your back up irons you will still be trying to look through a non functional optic.

The MaTech BUIS (mainly issued to US Army) is made by MaTech Solutions; while the one made by Knight's Armament (KAC) is the micro flip up rear sight (mainly issued to the Marine Corps).

BUIS are great in theory if all the stars align: you have a optic mount that easily detaches. Im all for BUIS if they dont hinder the operation of the rifles and its assets AND the positioning of those assets for max comfort and ergonomics for the shooter. Lets say i have a standard issue m4 with acog. If im competent, my acog will be torqued properly to the point i cant remove it without a screwdriver or multitool. While in contact, its a bit too optimistic to think you'll get that off in time. Thats one of many arguments that can be made for and against BUIS

This is why the see through pass through that those carry handle mounts for optics on top of carry handle retro ar's actually offer a bunch of advantages as you can still use the iron sights in a pinch under the reddot optic incase the reddot went out for some reason or visibility was low due to the optic being messed with by adverse conditions. Also those carry handle optics mounts allow nightvision mount height without a overly expensive mount; of course don't use a crappy mount regardless on a real AR. A.R.M.S mount or bust on a real firearm, for my airsoft CAR-15 a 20$ mount fits great, A.R.M.S mount is not in Canada and like 100$ or something. Still cheaper then a unity riser I think, and you get better less neck strained cheek chin weld or even just naturally hovering the weapon Infront of you inline with your head and proper shouldering and still have the ability to use irons via the tunnel inside the mount. ;) All on a classic gun build we have already been doing for a while now but people forget that's an option.

BUIS only weigh a few ounces even for steel ones, and then maybe a few more for a QD mount instead of the standard one for a given optic (or the 45 offset that I've also found to be very natural for use in all but the shooting positions that would be awkward regardless of sight method). Theyre also balanced front and back so its not like its adding a ton to a fulcrum effect from the front sight.. For me theres no reason not to run them, the biggest downside argument I could see would be some are very spendy, but a little research and checking reputable reviews can still point you in the direction of one's that wont break the bank for a newer owner while still being durable and reliable or ones that are a bit more expensive but have extra features that someone more experienced might want. And really an optic QD mount upgrade is the most expensive of the two, which is an easy "upgrade as you go" kinda thing anyway.

I hate the issued matech sights. Aperture is fine but the whole unit is massive and the range adjustments are useless outside of camp perry. All 1x sighting solutions should have a point blank zero set to whatever max distance you want (300, 400, whatever you can zero with the tightest rise and fall in between) and then don't touch it. You're not going to reliably see a man size target behind the fat front sight post past like 300 anyway. The little line setting on them is for zeroing an M16 btw. Found that out after nobody could tell me what it was for when I was in.

The sheer amount of tech dedicated to spotting optics may mean your "back up irons" need to be your primary system. Reports of an active russian capability to detect an optic, then shoot a laser into it. (Or just laz the location for artillery) Consider your a/o & opfor

What is the sight picture supposed to be when using the 300m setting on the rear sight? When shooting at 300m i have to switch to a 6 o'clock hold instead of holding dead-on. If i use the 200m zero setting I just compensate slightly over the target.

If you want a "Dead On" hold for a man-shaped target at 300, try either the 25/300 Zero or 36/300 Zero The 50/200 had an average of 6-8 inches of drop from point of aim at 300, depending upon bullet weight and barrel length The advantage of the 25 Zero is it is easy to set up, with US Military Zeroing targets, its disadvantage is it has a high vertical spread from 50 to 300 The 36 Zero has a much tighter vertical string of fire of approximately 4-6 inches, the disadvantage is past 300, the trajectory requires much higher holds

It's a 25m zero, vs a 36 *yard* zero. 25m also does not get you a 300m zero, it gets you a 330-340m zero; you need to either zero at 30m, or apply a 1.5MOA offset (impacting below point of aim) after zeroing at 25m. That is also only for m4's and m16's firing 55gr or 62gr 5.56, which can be significantly faster than equivalent .223

I hate that lollipop rear BUIS you showed. I used that as a primary a while and every time you move around that flimsy elevation gets knocked off. Every time. It rubs against something and your elevation is knocked off. Bad design for a fighting sight. Pain in the ass.

45 degree off set mounts for the BUIS is an option as well if you don't have QD optic mounts and might even be quicker for transition than pulling the optic off in order to get back in the fight.
