Infected Blood scandal: How UK failed on a global scale

The inquiry into the infected blood scandal has issued its final damning conclusions, prompting Rishi Sunak to issue a "wholehearted and unequivocal" apology on what he called "a day of shame for the British state."
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The infected blood scandal is not unique to the UK.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s many other countries also passed along contaminated blood to thousands of unsuspecting people.
But in most of those places, the reckoning came earlier - with compensation payouts and even criminal convictions secured years, and sometimes decades, ago.
Opportunities missed by successive governments of all parties here in the UK.

Institutions at the highest level covering for each other, just like Hillsborough taking decades, but this is so many more deaths, so many more families. My heart breaks for them. The Government, the Police, Whitehall ministers, the media, recently the post office, the inland revenue with carers and now the NHS all covering their backsides. I used to be proud of this country, the last thing I thought was great was the NHS.

Shameful! In the UK when people die due to deliberate government policy, no one is prosecuted. Many of those people who are responsible for this tragedy, become member of House of Lords. The government never accepts resposibility, and gives paltry amount as compensation, and platitudes. In other countries those reponsible for such a tragedy, go to prison, like in France, unlike in the UK, those respinsible go acot free.

Because you’re too passive. Threshold of tolerance for stupidity is too high in the U.K. French laws are keenly enforced because there’s a pattern with their people. Things get done because their people understand activism and advocacy. Brits go to YT comment sections and complain even in the midst of their distress. If you’re not proactive, then you don’t want justice as much as you say you do. You can protest for a country thousands of km away in the Middle East, but you can’t stand up for your own welfare and future of your unborn?? I’m sorry, but brits currently deserve what they’re getting. In every revolution I’ve studied so far, it was always the apoplexy of the people that engendered seismic change in legislation and eroded any complacency in government response/performance. Even the African nations now understand this. Forget U.K. legislation/leadership, what is the average Brit going to do about it now??

So, officials and doctors have known this for 30-40 years and still prescribe blood. And what is worse, there are substitutes, such as EPO. Several people need to go to prison. And any present doctor or nurse who administer or prescribe transfusion of blood need to go to jail immediately and get charged with assault. And, if the assault results in disease, the charge should be attempted murder.

Indeed, Japan did deal with this situation although the compensation paid out in Japan is often more symbolic and often amounts to pittance. Nevertheless, the tainted blood products scandal are not the only health scandal that Japan has dealt with and just this month, the Minamata Disease caused by severe mercury poisoning scandal reared its ugly head once more with bureaucrats cutting the microphone of speakers of victims at a hearing. The politicians get the lion's share of the blame, but it is the bureaucrats that are often the most to blame and since they are not accountable to the public, they often get away with it. The doctors that knowingly and willingly used these products when they had a safe batch on hand should be struck off of the medical registry and face prosecution. Those doctors who had no other supply and had no choice but to use the product in a life saving emergency situation should be dealt with more leniently. Every democracy clearly needs to have an overhaul of its civil service. They are rotten to the core and only have their own self-interest at heart. Those politicians that clearly for political reasons refused to out the cover up of the bureaucrats should also face prosecution. At least Naoto Kan had the guts to reveal this despicable cover up, although it is a shame that he made a mess of dealing with the Fukushima incident years later when he was Prime Minister. He is nevertheless, not a bad person. Just a bit incompetent.

To me as a South African, it looks like the cruelty of the colonizer continued after the end of colonization and, in this case towards its own subjects. Politicians, officials and corporate executives never seem to learn that the cover up is always worse than the original scandal.

Old people like him are called Jokyu Kokumin in Japan 2:34 Another ”Abe” who was in charge was beaten in court by one young man. The young one went to prison, the old one died in his own beds. Injustice in human society remains the same no matter where you go on earth.

A cover-up so very British and contemptible! of its own people. The kind of thing you would find in Putin's Russia.

Shocking the tories must never be allowed to ever be in government again. And stop funding the failure that is the NHS. We need good private health care!

Procured by a public institution the NHS where there wasn't any accountability for this mistake in procurement. If private this would have been corporate manslaughter and justice would have been served a lot sooner or been prevented @@erdao-yl5ls

When you have a centralised service (NHS), issues quickly become disasters and public doesn't know better or want to investigate further until it becomes too late.

Great Britain, nothing great from what I’m hearing with all these scandals, in fact crimes. They are not fit to interfere with other world affairs. Get this country in harmony first and foremost, especially in dealing with the state of overcrowded HMPs and serving proper justice for all. Peace
