There is a perk that increases your winds of magic by 2, I think - but need check, per spell known. So learning all available spells can increase your pool. Then when you use the perk that gives you 0.25% max wm per enemy hit, you can even get more bang per spell. About tankiness, there are a few spells from minor magic that give you minor amount of armor or defense vs arrows. Nothing worth writing home about , but why not use - also learning those synergies with the above comment.
