Till and Rammstein in general has a kind of magic control over the audience. No mater the matter, no matter the song, he plays them like a fiddle.

As usual with rammstein, the song has several ways to understand it. One is that the band slips into the role of the media and criticizes them. The other one is the one you see in the video. The band celebrates themself and lets themself be celebrated by their fans. However, as with the media, they also take criticism at the same time. Because the fans also get on this train and ride along. They do what they are told. "Ich versteh euch nicht" Is also ambiguous. 1. in the sense of "I can't hear you" and 2. in the sense of "I don't understand you" (as translated in the subtitle). In the sense of "I don't understand you" means nothing else than that the band can not understand why people follow blindly.

Love the reaction and the take on it that it may have been written for a crowd. That might very well have been the case, what do I know, but I've always interpreted the song as a first person perspective of an artist that acquired fame either prematurely or undeservedly. That interpretation of the song is why I find the chorus so humbling: Can you hear me? (We hear you!) Can you see me? (We see you!) Can you feel me? (We feel you!) I don't understand you In that context, I hear the line "I don't understand you" as "I don't fully understand what we have done to deserve the praise you give us"

Loved your reaction! And yes, from your point of view it seems to be a perfect song prepared for crowd control. Once you see the music video - which is simply amazing - it might change a lot 😉 It shows the greatest desire of all bands - to control media, control the way they are being shown. In this song, they set up the rules - not media or crowd... I'm really hyped for this song, in three days I'm going to see this live and I'm pretty sure, that around 70 thousand Poles will be shouting: - WIR SEHEN EUCH! - WIR HÖREN EUCH! - WIR FULLEN EUCH! ... and so will I 😎 Have a nice day!

it wouldnt be rammstein if there were no ambiguty in it. yes it is also a crowd song to which they can cheer... "he sings i dont understand you" - in german it can be understood as: "i cant hear you" animating the crowd to go even louder - but it can also mean, that he cant understand why everyone is cheering, cause he cant cant understand the concept of fandom! the original music video also suggest an interpretation as media critic, where the society tends to sympathize with bank robbers for example (heist movies) or their fascination for serial killers

The official music Video Suggests a meaning you can't really hear though. It shows a lot of references to the Gladbeck hostage incident were a group of criminals used hostages to draw a lot of media Attention and enjoyed the whole country being focused on them. That also gives the line "I want to see your hands" a whole new meaning

The song is about the fact that Rammstein extremely rarely interacts with the audience at concerts. There are no breaks at the concerts where Till or another member speaks or makes a few jokes and there are rarely situations where the singer sings and then is quiet to let the audience sing. You know, that Shallalalal - turn the microphone to the audience - LALALA. This was often criticized in the early history of the band in germany. Because... stupid expectation probably, i don't know. It is also about the band not being able to understand the audience acoustically and not knowing exactly what the audience is expecting in general.
