Infiniti G37 VR Transmission Swap

2013 Supercharged G37 Sedan @650whp gets a Q50 VR transmission swap after a Level 10 failed. This is a RWD and we get it to fit with the stock driveshaft and a slightly modified crossmember. This budget swap only required a 2016+ 3.0t (VR) Q50 transmission, valvebody, and torque converter, and some new transmission fluid. Reused G37 flexplate, transmission mount, and driveshaft. I just put a SOHO A2A kit with the same supercharger.... on my 370Z manual with only 13k miles... and a head gasket blew the same day I tuned it! I have a 2014 Q50S that had it's valve body replaced at 60k and now it seems to be going bad again at 80k!-- this is right after I replaced the radiator last week! well, same here exactly but there is no information on our scenario. we dont know if the VR30 transfer case is identical or not, we don't know if it is compatible with our VQ era driveshafts and no one has any definitive information on the VQ driveshafts' length compatibility if we use the VQ tail housing & VQ transfer case on the swapped in VR AT.

@@bennett4881 if you're AWD you'll need a AWD VR30 trans, they're not a exact match up so some extra work is required to make it fit. This is just assumption after researching into it. I hope that helps and good luck on the build.

@Bennett the vq37 transfer case is longer than the vr30 transfer case, and does not have the same tail housing mating patterns. Replacing the awd assembly as a single unit is less of a headache.

Hey, curious how u feel about the manual swap u did on the q. I have 2 i2008 nfiniti g37s coupes. One is a boosted 6spd manual (580/420) and the other is an automatic with bolt ons.. I have been contemplating swapping the SC kit from the manual to the automatic and going with the VR set up as well. Curious what your thoughts are since you have both AT and MT.

Hi, did you resolve the flare? I saw your video and several others and would likely do the swap this spring. I saw you only moved the solenoids to the VR TCM, the others swapped the whole unit - G37 TCM in the VR30 Transmission. Will wait for your input :)

Haven’t resolved the flare. I’ll be replacing the trans soon. The Vr trans I got didn’t come with a TCM or solenoids and so the ones I put in were from the VQ. I purchased another G37 valvebody complete and swapped the TCM and solenoids over to the VR valvebody assembly. I don’t know if I should have used the VQ valvebody complete. A bad solenoid could have burned the clutches on my test drive but I don’t think that was the case. What is your input on this ?

@@txboostlife As far as I know you need the G37 TCM with good valve bodies, remove the VR TCM and put the G37 inside, bolt it and have fun :D I am in the process of buying one from Canada and getting it shipped to here in Bulgaria (EUROPE) so that i can modify my car. Hopefully before summer.

Please keep us posted about the flare and if you get it resolved. I did the vr trans swap, my old trans would flare sometimes and even with the vr trans it flares sometimes, very similar to the way yours did it in the video. Super annoying!

@@txboostlife you need a proper tune for the VR transmission swap. Just driving it without a proper trans tune will cause issues on the VR trans. Assuming there are no issues with any solenoids, clutches or anything else.

Yes it was the coupler on the intercooler. I tighten the wrong side of the coupler lol. I didn’t have a RWD VR crossmember to reference if it would fit. The trans and crossmember I had was from an AWD

My 370z has the same stupid 3-4 upshift "flare" - but only when it's warm, then sits, then warms up again - a good example is the trip to the store - then heading back - I've sort of "lived" with it; However I can hear a whirrrrrring sound so I think the TQ converter is slowly dying, thus me watching this! I think it's VR time.

A proper tune will fix that and make it last longer. Normally a tune is not used to fix mechanical issues, but in the VQ 7spd case, it helps alot to properly tune the auto trans correctly.

@@saulnismoknights Yeah It's really strange - because - when the trans is cold, it shifts like a champion. Once it heats up, then it becomes more sluggish unless it's a full throttle/max acceleration situation. I suspect that in the valve body - there's something going on that - due to higher temps/change in viscosity - the shifts are more sluggish. This "could" be why a valve body upgrade is a good idea (I could be wrong - just going off memory and I have seen a few shops offering upgrades on that component as well).

I dont think its understood but its not the trans itself its the valve body. So this what is happening the valve body is made of aluminum and the pistons are made of steel. When the TCM command the solenoids to change the direction of the pistons to flow fluid thru different chambers to change gears, it scores the piston wall allowing a lost of pressure to the clutches after heavy use . This causes gear slipping, shuddering of the torque converter, the torque converter lock issues, gear flaring etc. I had the same issue with my 2006 gs300 that had a brand new transmission in it and the same issue after rebuild. Come to find out transmission shops do dont rebuild the valve body when they rebuild the transmission they just clean it. The time that it consumes they just want to get you in and out. The biggest problem is the transmission in the infiniti, lexus , toyota, gm, fords all have 100000 mile service widows and there is no way in hell the fluid stands up to the abuse. All Asian transmissions are built like this and to fix the problem in my GS was just to upgrade the piston with like material aluminum. All piston where change with aluminum piston and Viton seals to correct the scoring in the valve body to hold the correct pressure. There is also a key in the valve body that mechanically upgrades the pressure to make a direct engagement for the clutches. Level 10 takes your money and rebuild your tranny but dont upgrade the valve. This is why they charge you for the valve body upgrade. Learn to do your work yourself. Sonnax gives you a step by step on how to upgrade your valve body on your own. It save me 3500 dollars and all i spent was 4 hours and 110.00 dollars for the kit. Please whatever you do upgrade your valve in you VR transmission yourself or send it to a reputable place that does it. I called plenty of places and told me this and that so I ended up doing myself. Most of the times its just the pistons in the valvebody scoring the chambers. Sonnax gives you the seals and piston to make the valve body perform correctly and you can turn up the pressure without reprogramming the tranny.

Well the 2008 Coupes came with a 5AT rather than the 7AT, so you would probably have to swap the TCM as well.
