Better practice is to open the brake bleeder and then push the caliper piston so as to not push dirty brake fluid into the lines or especially the ABS system which can ruin it. I still say this even though you said in the beginning you're not going for a perfect brake job.

Terrible advice. By doing that you allow air into system. Air in the system can be compressed resulting in loss of braking force. It's called a bleeder for a reason. You are supposed to push the fluid back up as the pads wear the fluid level drops, once a certain level is reached the brake lamp will illuminate. By pushing it back to fit the new pads it raises that level up to normal.

@@guyva_unito_sree3 I don't usually bleed for a standard pad/rotor job. I bleed separately for fluid replacement and when replacing calipers. If you don't bleed with the correct method & sequence, you could end up causing issues
