Today we're trying one of the Megabeast scenarios released alongside TAG Raid. Japanese ninjitsu matches up against combined army protheion in a race to feast on or cut down the enormous Steindrage.

Just a quick thing on the impersonator getting critted: having or not having surprise attack against a model that doesn't have CC above 20 in that F2F roll doesn't do anything for your chances of getting critted, it only widens the range in which you win the F2F roll with non-crit results. A full impersonator would not have been critted _in that specific roll_ that's true, but the chances were still one in twenty at the time the ninja was ordered to go in on the raicho - so in that situation a full impersonator with the same CC capabilities is no safer from the unlikely crit scenario.

While it's true that the chances specifically of being killed *by an enemy critical* are unchanged, surprise has a significant difference on the face to face roll. A speculo killer with surprise has a 5.35% chance of dying in CC to the raicho; without surprise, that chance increases to 8.96%. This means that the gaki's discover roll nearly doubled the chance the oniwaban died to the Raicho (strictly speaking a 67% increase over a small base). These small edges matter a lot and this was an example where one materialised.

​@@R0bertShepherd Of course, having surprise attack matters for the CC F2F (aside from not having to highroll the armor save or die, it's also good for your order pool to just win the first one and monofilament the target). It's true that a full impersonator would have a smaller chance of getting killed by the raicho at the time of activation; I'm just saying that it's strange to call out the gaki's discover as impactful there when the raicho won due to a crit, and all the SA does is move **that** result to a different value with the same odds of being rolled - if the gaki fails the discover but the raicho rolls whatever it rolled here -3, the situation doesn't change. For a practical example of that edge mattering, you'd need to get the super rare F2F loss due to the raicho rolling a normal success within the surprise attack band and the impersonator rolling below that (ie one of the outcomes covered by the extra 3.61% in your probability calculation).

​@TheWujuStyle with surprise removed, there are three extra results on the D20 roll that can produce a possible success for the Raicho, and as it happened it rolled one of those numbers. It helps not to get much hung up on it rolling *exactly* a 14 etc as that's not particularly important to the possibilities and risks that can materialise. Saying "the Raicho crit, but wouldn't if I'd had surprise" is a convenient shorthand (i.e. what Pratchett calls "lies-to-children") for the oniwaban wearing an increased level of which which observably subsequently materialised.

@@R0bertShepherd Understood, I probably should have qualified in the first response that I am nitpicking here. The thing is the 11/14 isn't just a success; the raicho isn't dodging a mine or something - it's a crit which is a whole different category of result that doesn't care about the values anyone rolled - only whether its a crit or not.

Almost the same thing happened to me with saito vs varuna. My saito had defeated a montesa in ARO CC, then in my turn i nove It to cc vs a squalo. I don't use smoke cause i lack orders, so it's saito cc vs the squalo's heavy pistol. I roll a 3, he crits. Sad times all around.

Saito Togan also does. Yojimbo is the cheapest though and highly mobile

@@michak3633 I know, he expressed the cheapest and easiest. Both Saito and Kitsune have to leave their cosy Marker state to use Smoke. This disqualifies them as there's a difference between having a difference between practically having. Technically they have Smoke, Practically they're just g going to use it in themselves as the opportunity costs of using it are high.
